iPod Touch gets Mail, Maps, Webclips, Stocks, Weather, & Notes – $20

It’s about time but for $20? I’m pretty sure I’ve seen these apps hacked to work on the iPod Touch from Installer.app but now it’s not there so it may have been removed. If anyone has tried it let us know. Although, if your Touch isn’t hacked then it’s worth the $20.

Official Press Release:

Apple Announces Major Software Upgrade for iPod touch

MACWORLD SAN FRANCISCO, Jan. 15 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ — Apple(R) today
announced a major software upgrade for the iPod(R) touch, making the best iPod
into even more — the world’s best Wi-Fi mobile device. iPod touch customers
already have the most advanced mobile web browser in the world with
Safari(TM), and now Apple is adding five more great mobile applications —
Mail, Maps, Stocks, Weather and Notes. The iPod touch software upgrade also
includes new features such as Web Clips, a customizable home screen and
beginning today, the ability to watch iTunes(R) Movie Rentals. New iPod touch
products shipping from the factory will include the software upgrade and
existing iPod touch customers can get the software upgrade for $19.99 by
purchasing and downloading it from iTunes (http://www.itunes.com).
“These amazing new mobile applications make iPod touch not only the best
iPod, but the best Wi-Fi mobile device in the world,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s
CEO. “With its revolutionary touch interface and software, plus its stunning
3.5 inch screen, iPod touch is evolving into the first mainstream Wi-Fi mobile
platform of the 21st century.”
Mail on iPod touch is a rich HTML email client that fetches email in the
background from most POP3 or IMAP mail services and displays photos and
graphics along with the text of the email. Users can configure Mail for
Google’s Gmail, Yahoo! Mail, .Mac Mail or most POP or IMAP based mail services
with just a few clicks.
Maps on iPod touch features the ability to automatically find your current
location using nearby Wi-Fi base stations*, and use it as a starting or ending
point for directions or to find local points of interest. Users can get
real-time traffic conditions, and view maps in map or satellite view, or a
hybrid view which combines map and satellite views so you can see major street
names overlaid on satellite imagery.
Stocks and Weather allow users to access live stock and weather reports at
their fingertips, and Notes lets you jot down information on-the-go using the
intelligent keyboard.
The iPod touch home screen can now be customized, allowing users to
reorder and add new icons, with support for up to nine different home screens
which they can easily flick between. With the new Web Clips feature, you can
even create custom icons on your home screen for your favorite websites. Web
Clips are a great way to easily track web sites that you frequently check such
as news, blogs, sports sites, movie listings and more.
With Apple’s new iTunes Movie Rentals, movie fans can rent movies on their
computer, easily and quickly transfer them to their iPod touch, and watch them
anywhere on iPod touch’s gorgeous 3.5 inch screen. Users can also now navigate
forward or backward through their movies by chapters, select alternate
language tracks and view subtitles, if available.

  1. iPhone Apps 1.1.2 running OK on my jailbroken iTouch 1.1.2
Just search for iPhoneApps112.zip on Google and install.
If jailbroken not worth the upgrade and $20 / €17,99 – IMHO Apple should have gave ’em for free in 1.1.3!

  2. i wonder if the new firmware brings a few more docks other than the iphone one. looking forward to iphone 101 #4

  3. @BOK – I agree…$20 for the upgrade is lame!

@alex_dlc – I’m not sure…I’m sure we will hear something about it soon! And…iPhone101 #4 is on the brink!

  4. This is a rip off. First of all, the new iPods are gonna come standard with the new firmware and thus, new features FOR FREE. So why should those of us who were so loyal to Apple that we purchased our iPods first have to be rewarded by having to pay an extra $20 just to have these 4 new apps? Additionally, the supposed Home customization is still somewhat limited when compared to a Jailbroken iPod with Summerboard, Customize, iSwitcher, and all the other customizing ( and oh, by the way, they’re FREE) apps available. And doesn’t currently allow all third-party apps. We’ll have to wait til February to find out what third-party apps Apple will allow ( Oh, and of course, for a fee). BUMP THAT! I’m happy with my Jailbroken iPod.

  5. Okay, this makes me pretty upset. Hackers should work on getting the new features onto installer. I mean, I’m not going to pay $20 for apps I already have along with a couple new features. All I want is the ability to customize my springboard (without going into customize) and I want the new Google maps features too. And I have no idea how I’m going to find a way to be able to view rentals on my Touch without paying $20. I might just give into the $20 update if I get sick of waiting. Hopefully hackers will think of something sweet.

  6. on the brink?

  7. To TIM: But if u upgrade to the new firmware (to get the rental ability) you’ll UNjailbreak your Touch. So, u’ll be giving up SO MUCH just to “rent’ movies for 1 day’s worth of viewing. Now worth it if you ask me.

  8. I meant that it’s NOT worth it…

  9. @alex_dlc….you will see iPhone101 #4 today or tomorrow.

  10. To ORTIZLGND: Oh, yeah, I totally agree with you. It’s not worth it to update at all. But I really want the new maps features, the custom springboard, the web clips, and the movie rentals might come in handy sometime, but I’m not thrilled about it or anything. My thoughts on it are… if someone comes out with a 1.1.3 Jailbreak (tested good) I will update and jailbreak my Touch again and do everything all over again. I know, it totally stinks, and I’m extremely disappointed about that, but it seems like the way to go considering Apple’s plans for future SDK. I mean… what if Apple comes out with the SDK in February and everyone will need to update (which is VERY likely)? I’ll be 3 firmwares behind by that point. I need to get going with this thing… I can’t keep using 1.1.1 forever.
