This app is real Skype for the iPhone, and more. I am testing this app as I write this and so far I have successfully used Skype over wifi and the call worked perfect! You can get more info at Fring.com. fring is available through the fring source.

As I’m writing this I’m also getting updates from twitter into fring. When you close fring it warns you it’s running in the background, if you don’t want it to you need to hit the exit button instead of the home button when exiting.
Also sometimes it takes a while for your accounts to subsribe, especially if you have the wrong password, just be patient…
It’s seems that when you’re iPhone locks that the app logs you off. I’ve installed fring on Brooke’s iPhone to make a Skype call but since my iPhone is locked I’m not showing up in the buddy list. UPDATE: not sure why it wasn’t working but we are getting twitter updates when the iPhone is locked, even locked for 5+ minutes. This also effected battery to leave running in background.
I’ve tried to make calls through Skype from iPhone to iPhone but haven’t succeded yet :(
Downfalls:
when in skype call, screen does not turn off like in regular call
can’t use speakerphone
doesn’t stay connected when locked (insomnia?)
when making or receiving calls it doesn’t show who the other contact is

strangely enough, if i try to add http://fring.com/iphone.xml to my sources at iAppCat it says Wrong XML Type, but that also happened with your wrong source, i got this one http://fring.com/iphone.xml from their official HP
I have used this app on my WM6 T-Mobile Dash and it worked great. Sometimes it would hang when starting the program and I would have to restart. Hopefully this program for the iPhone doesn’t act the same way.

weird thing… I added their source and all I get under the “fring” category is “fring pre-release 0.978”. I’ve checked the source with their website and its correct, I then deleted the source and added it again and I still get the same result.
Yes, this is what I installed. If you check their site, this is actually a pre-release.

Yes, Skype works. However, it only works over Wifi and not Edge. We also can’t get it to make an iPhone to iPhone Skype call. But, it will Sype a computer.

Nope, Skype like, but with free landlines calls….very sweet :-) …you can also have a SIP client and use the voipbuster account…

There’s something wrong with my fring )= I can send messages to my buddies on MSN and they can see the messages but i cant see their replies even though they told me they replied! Can anyone help?
amazing app within seconds had MSN messenger going because mobilechat I cant get to work at all now good app

YES, fring charges you nothing! The software is completely free and as calls are routed over the internet rather than the mobile network, you need only pay your regular service provider for the data costs.
I don’t know why, but the calling option isn’t working…
The Icq and the Messenger are working great, but in Google talk, when i’am pressing the call button its crashed and take me to the main screen(the summerboard)

Both Skype and Google Talks work fine on my 1.1.4 iPhone. Call and Chat were also working but I couldn’t get the headphone work properly. I could only hear the ringtone, no voice but my buddy was able to hear my voice from my side.
It’s working for me on my 1.1.3 (gtalk, messenger and SIP). I haven’t tried skype yet.
The sound doesn’t work via the headset though. Others can hear me, but there is no sound whatsoever. I hope it gets fixed in 1.0.

What I was wondering is: How does one sign up for Skype? Is there a charge to use this service? I tried Googling this & can’t make heads or tails out of whether or not u get charged for each call u make using Skype? As well, there was talk of SIP vs. Skypeout?
Pls help as I’m very confused & would like to use this app!

To get started using Skype, you need to download our free software.
If you have any problems using Skype, please first make sure that you are using the most recent version of the software.
To download Skype to your computer:
– Simply download the software.
– Save the installation file to your computer.
– Be sure to remember where you saved the file (the desktop might be a good place).
Please also read also the user guides.
The first time you start Skype you must create a new user account. Select Don’t have a Skype Name from the sign in window then press enter or click Next in order to move on to the next level. Complete the empty fields. You will be asked to choose a Skype Name and password.

You have to pay to use Skype I believe. I use freedigits, they allow free incoming calls and provides a number for you. If you have T-Mobile Fav 5 program you can forward calls to your Freedigit numbers and have Fring answer the calls and you wont use any plan minutes. Of course you’d have to be connected via Wi-Fi. I cant get past the start up screem where you have to createa fring account everytime i enter a new usenae and password it either tells me that it has been used or the app just closes to the iphone home screen. can someone help me

Never mind. They must have fixed something at their end, because it just worked for me too. Nothing different done. I just tried it again. 1.1.4 Ziphone jailbreak.

Just a warning … this happens … even AFTER you uninstall Fring!!! I uninstalled it because of its HUGE instability issue, but its STILL unavailable! I’m going to try to Restory with iTunes and rejailbreak it. If it doesn’t work, I’m going to be severely pissed off! I didn’t pay $129.99 USD for the official iPhone Bluetooth headset for it not to freakin’ work! I can’t even say its a $130 paperweight because it doesn’t weigh squat!! lol
Okay, an update after Restoring through iTunes :
It DOES work, but yes… its a full restore. I have to download a year’s worth of 3rd party apps all over again… Just to think the sourse I’ve added… If it wasn’t for iAppCat, suicide might be an answer, lol. Use at your own risk there, Gary. =/

I keep getting errors or neverending “registering” circles. What’s going on? I’ve tried uninstalling, reinstalling, rebooting, etc. Nothing works. I’m on a FW1.1.4 … and you guys here have FW1.1.4s, right? ^^;

I had the same issue at work… At home I have no problem … It seems that my WIFI is blocking some of the ports.
I noticed that Dock doesn’t work with Fring installed. Uninstalled and Dock is back. This sucks. I use dock to access my hidden apps so fring is a no go for me at this time unless someone has a work around.
using my iphone on FW 1.1.4, installing fring was working fine. BUT i can not login (register) with my existing account. i do know fring from my Nokia Mobile Phone times ;-) it’s working BUT not with the iphone. I do hope they’re updating the pre-release asap!

Word of warning: Great app, but…
After installing ALL sms messages wiped out by Fring; which is not really a drama; but even unread, new messages will be erased before you can get to them! After uninstalling Fring, restoring sms file everything OK. Have the feeling it is some dir permission issue.. Any comment?
I didn’t lose my SMS … I wonder what’s going on? It seems this app is messing with different things for different people. Maybe its Jailbreak method dependant?
Iphone: 1.1.4, pwnage; all sms wiped after Fring install. Was thinking about autolock? Somehow, sms’s vanish after autolock period, after unlocking. That makes me think about changes in user dir permissions?
The permissions are okay … they’re all 0755 when I SSH’d terminal. I can usually work around things like this, but I’m at a loss of words, for once…
Oh, and as far as I know, it only works on FW1.1.3/.4. The default directory is the changed /mobile folder, so that’s not it either. Freakin’ want this program so bad, hurry up and v1.0 already! haha

I’m on 1.1.3 and it was running just fine until I went to text someone while fring was running. After the text sent, everything in my sms window was gone. So, I exited out of fring and tried to send another but it hang and the text send did not complete. I could still use the home button and other functions but the text wouldn’t send. Had to restart it and texts are working fine now and showing in the sms window as well. Going to try starting up fring again to see what happens. Great app though, can’t wait for 1.0.

what does it mean when you have a red dot with a number 4 on it, on the actual fring icon. like when you have missed calls or sms? i logged in and i didnt see 4 contacts online, only saw 1 so not sure what the heck it means? anyone

Like mobilechat it takes forever to load the buddy list on MSN, fring takes longest because it adds all the buddies i previously deleted…. Is it possible to program fring to a current MSN buddy list? Otherwise it’s pretty useless for me on MSN. However, skype works well and pretty quick.

its a famouse habbit of fring that it erases all u r sms i tryed it for a while and it was always the seam after a bit all u r sms are gone and new incoming sms are as well …. its to bad becouse it is the best skype app for the iphone

Skype work fine on my 1.1.4 iPhone. (a litle delay) Call over sip didn’t work for me. I can hear my calling partner,but he is haering nothing.
The same under skype works.
