I don't know if you saw Thank You for Smoking, but the one quote says a lot... "90% of all good or bad done in the world is to pay a mortgage." With that in mind, offering to pay at least a bit to developers gives them more incentive to work harder and create much better apps. I think people forget the amount of work involved in making a good app. I think I'd like a few lawyers to take my case for free, graphic designers to make me a whole company identity for free, a few carpenters to rebuild my house for free.
