Golden Shellback Waterproof Coating

More and more reasons to visit our Forum! juanciao from the forums private messeged me a link to a video about Golden Shellback. It is a “coating produces a vacuum deposited film that is nonflammable, has low toxicity and has the ability to weatherproof electronic devices and other surfaces. It contains no volatile organic combustibles (VOCs). The clear, nearly non-detectable, uniform film is insoluble in solvents. When applied to clean, moisture free surfaces, such as plastic, copper, aluminum, metal, ceramic, steel, tin or glass, the coating is transparent with excellent weather proofing and anti-corrosion properties.”

It is placed all over the device, inside and out. It’s not available yet but pricing is expected to be between $50 to $75 per device. See their site at golden-shellback.com for more info. Check out this video which includes a demo on an iPod Touch:

i’m not sure i coud go without my iphone for that long (however that long may be)

  2. That’s the coolest thing I’ve seen in a while. Hopefully since the iPhone is small, it should be pretty cheap. Thank you juanciao & doug.

  3. awesome! definitely doing it, as long as it’s not too expensive that is..

  4. Note to self and everyone else too. I just remembered once I dropped my phone outside and I didn’t realize it. When I noticed it was missing it had been raining for probably 30 minutes. I found it outside in the mud, picked it up, wiped it off, and it worked good as new. Golden Shellback is still a good idea though, as I wouldn’t advise people to try what I did.

  5. this is insane! can that actually be possible..lol i know i saw it with my own eyes but i dont know if i would feel comfortable putting my iphone underwater…maybe ill tell my boy to do it first lol =p

  6. But will it blend?…………..no I’m just joking, hahaha. My question is, does the solution protect it from scratches? etc? Is it like a the invisible shield or does it only protect it from water damage? ALSO, suppose you already have the invisible shield on it, if you send it in what happens to the shield? Hmm…I just can’t believe it works under water, that is just amazing.

  7. haha… I definitely need this for my iPhone, and MB pro:x

  8. who wants to use his iPhone underwater? -.-

  9. Hold up, doesn’t the iphones touch screen work on some kind of electricity through the skin? wouldnt this void the use of the screen?

    • Jonesyxxiv says

Yes it does work based on electricity, but I would assume it would still work fine. It would be like using a screen protector. Josh’s comment below yours is false.

  10. ^ No, it works on heat, like a notebook’s touchpad.

  11. I am sure this would void the warranty. Also, any thoughts on heat? Coating the insides like this, wouldn’t it cause chips to heat up more?

I wonder what the long term effects are, I guess if it gets too hot, just drop it in some ice water.

    Cool..though.

  12. The website also says that it’s not reversible and that to repair the phone, you’ll need to use “abrasive methods”. That doesn’t sound so great.

The $50 to $75 estimate was was one persons guess but it was later revealed to cost about $1000. Im not sure if that $1000 was the price for a laptop, and the iphone may be cheaper, but its still going to be very expensive.

  14. This is cool, but try out invisbleshield. Basically the same thing but cheaper. Not sure if it can do water, but i know it is scratch resistant, and their video is cool :)

The point of the Golden Shellback is that its waterproof. Screen protectors are a dime a dozen.

  15. Excellent for someone who works full-time in a rain forest, or a swim instructor, Marine Biologist, etc… :-D
Once OtterBox comes out with the defender case for the 3G, it will be a very inexpensive alternative to this process (and you get to keep your phone while you wait for your case)! For those of you who haven’t used the defender case… give it a try for 50 bucks… best case out there in my humble opinion!

  16. That is not water that they are pouring into the electronic device. It looks like water but it is not. I will get the name of that, and post it later because I forgot the exact name for it.

  17. This is amazing and yes that’s real water Patrick. I don’t think Tekzilla would pull wool over it’s viewers eyes.
