Brilliant – WinterBoard Theme

Available In: Cydia       Price: Free

WinterBoard Ok, DJContagious has been writing about a few of his themes so, I thought I would write about the one that I am using right now. I have been using since it was released a few days ago. The name of the theme is Brilliant. It has a decent amount of icons. It also mods the slider bars, wallpaper, lock screen wallpaper and badges. It is a little on the boyish side for me! :) But, other than that, I think it is a decent theme!

IBM Releases Lotus Notes via Web App

Available via Safari       Price: Free with Lotus Notes License

The wait is finally over. There has been talk for a long time that IBM was developing Lotus Notes for the iPhone. You can now access your email, calendars, and contacts if you have an existing Lotus Notes License. Surprisingly this is not available through an app in the App Store but via a web address using Safari. Just visit ibm.com/software/lotus/products/domino-web-access/ultralite to find out how to get it set up for your business. Below are some screenshots of the web app which IBM calls Lotus iNotes. StatusNotifier 0.1

Available In: Cydia       Price: Free

StatusNotifier Now, this is an application that many of you have probably been waiting for!! I personally use IntelliScreen for my status bar notifications but, if you do not use IntelliScreen…this is perfect for you! StatusNotifier adds an icon to your status bar (the bar at the top of your iPhone with the carrier logo on it) if you have a missed email, text, call or voicemail. This is very similar to the Taskbar Notifier application for firmware 1.1.4 and below.

StatusNotifier is a code application so, when you install it there will not be an icon to your SpringBoard and it will automatically start adding the notification icons to your status bar. [Read more…]

rps 1.0.0

Available In: Cydia       Price: Free

rps rps (Rock, Paper, Scissors) is a game that came out a few days ago in Cydia. It is exactly what it sounds like…the classic rock, paper, scissors game. At first, I was sooo confused on how to play this game, I ended up reading the Help!

When you open rps, you will get the main screen. On the upper menu bar there are two options, Prefs and Help. Prefs will give you the option to play against the computer or another player. Help will give more info about the game. To play, select the Play! button at the bottom of the screen. This will bring up a menu with three options; [Read more…]

Facebook 2.0

Available In: App Store       Price: Free

FacebookFacebook has release an update to their application for the iPhone. Don’t be confused, this is not their web app, which a lot of people thought was more functional than the app from the App Store. With the recent update, there’s no competition. There are a ton of new features. One of my favorites is the sub-menu under the News Feed that allows you to scroll it from right to left. One feature I have had troubles with is the chat tab. Sometimes when selecting a friend, the application crashes. Here’s the complete list of features from the upgrade page:

– Notifications (don’t confuse this with the future feature from Apple. This is just access to the notifications section in Facebook
– The full News Feed
– News Feed story comments
– People search
– Friend requests
– Photo tagging
– Photo captioning
– Photo posts to your friends’ Walls
– The full Mini-Feed, now combined with The Wall
– Your entire inbox, plus the sent folder and updates tab
– Inbox search
– Message attachments

Here are a bunch of screenshots showing some of the new features: [Read more…]

Gates Bluize Theme

Available In: Cydia       Price: Free

WinterBoard I really like this theme! This theme is kinda like a blue version of iWood Realized, and is a good theme if you’re looking for a nice, soft theme. This theme skins a good variety of icons, but not a lot. One positive side to that is the icons are square, just like the App Store icons, so if you have many apps installed, they won’t stick out as much with this theme. This theme does not skin any apps, or have an “other.artwork” skin, but is nice for a basic, decent look for your iPhone.

iPhone Coming to Sprint and Verizon?

Apple There are rumors that Apple has been in some negotiations with Verizon about bringing the iPhone to their network in 2009. 9to5Mac has a list of nine reasons on why this might just be true including recent job postings for EVDO and CDMA Engineers on Apple’s website. Check out the complete article HERE on 9to5mac.com.

Change with App Store Application Review Process

App Store It seems that Apple has finally done something about the application review issue in the App Store. The change now requires you to have purchased/downloaded an application in order to write a review of it. I’m not sure why this was not implemented from the beginning but, I’m glad that they finally got around to it. If you have not purchased an application, you will get a pop-up informing you that you will either need to purchase or download the app in order to review it. If the application is free, you have to have at least downloaded the application in order to review it.

StumblerPlus 1.0.1

Available In: Cydia       Price: Free

StumblerPlus StumblerPlus is a WiFi network finder. When you open the application, you will get the main screen where you will notice a Scan option in the upper left corner. When you select Scan, you will get a list of WiFi networks in the area. You can then select a network and get more info about it. Here is what you will get; SSID, BSSID, OUI Vendor, RSSI, Singal Strength, Channel, AP Mode, Beacon Interval, WPA, WEP and Hidden Network. Do not ask me what any of that means!! Hopefully none of it is private! But, if you are into all knowing all that stuff…there you go. Check out the screenshots below!

Stereo’s Leopard Theme

Available In: Cydia       Price: Free

WinterBoard This is currently my favorite theme in Cydia! It’s called Stereo’s Leopard, and it was a theme I immediately remembered from Customize 2.0 back on 1.1.4. The one thing I love about this theme are the large (literally), and big amount of icons it has. It skinned about 50% of my icons, and has app themes too. Like MobileMusicPlayer (pictured below) for instance: usually, you would see a frozen screenshot of it for about 2 seconds, then would be able to use it. Those 2 seconds are when the app loads. So what this theme does is [Read more…]

MobileCast 3.0~b1

Another app that made it’s debut this week-end was MobileCast. I really liked the MobileCast application from firmware 1.1.4 and below!! I used it all the time! So, I was really excited to see that MobileCast had made it to firmware 2.x. MobileCast is an application that allows you to wireless download podcasts.

The new MobileCast has a slightly new look and feel to it. When you open the application, you will notice three options on the lower menu bar; Favorites, Downloads and Search. The Search option allows you to search for audio and video podcasts. I will say that the search is a little slow and slightly glitchy but, if you can make it past that, you will get a list of relevant options based on your search. You can then select Add next to the podcast you would like to add to your favorites. You will get a pop-up saying that the podcast feed was successfully added. [Read more…]

Stack 2.0

Available In: Cydia       Price: Free

Happy Monday!! It seems there have been a few apps added to Cydia over the week-end but, lets start with Stack. We have know for a little while now that the developer of Stack was getting close to a release and it seems it has finally arrived!

Stack is an application that will stack applications on the lower right of your iPhone screen. When you tap the stack, it will display the apps (think Leopard). You can then select the Settings icon (when the stack is out) and it will give you a few options. The Settings option includes the ability to turn on a curved stack or grid stack (see screenshots below). I actually really like the grid option but, I had an issue with getting into the Settings while using the grid option. I don’t know if you experienced they same thing or not, but it was basically impossible to get back into the Settings!! I was able to get into the Settings by removing a few of the icons from my Dock. [Read more…]

Custom E-Mail Signature (updated)

MailThere is a hack out that will allow you to change your email signature in Mail. We wrote about it before for older firmware but someone emailed us and asked why it doesn’t work with 2.x firmware. The main reason is the directory path has changed to mobile from root. I’m also updating the link to convert the file to XML. It’s not easy, so be ready to spend a few minutes on this one:

1. Make sure your signature is not the default one that only says, “Sent from my iPhone”. Changing it to anything else so it creates a custom file.

2. Backup existing config file for mail. It’s called com.apple.mobilemail.plist and it’s located in the /private/var/mobile/Library/Preferences/ folder. Just SSH in and copy it to your computer somewhere in case you mess the file up :) [Read more…]

Installer Update – Version 4.0b8

Available In: Installer       Price: Free

Installer It seems that RiP Dev has updated Installer bringing it to version 4.0b8. I personally have found the upgrade to run much smoother. It does not lag as much and I do not have the crashing issues that I had with the previous version. Below is info from the RiP Dev’s blog on exactly what the update does.

Installer 4.0b8 is out (it’s been ready for a while and even included in the last PwnageTool but we were holding off to releasing it publically). Among notable features is the switch to libcurl from the stock Foundation URL loading classes, which means more lightweight CPU and memory footprint and, more importantly, resumable file transfers. The new beta also features a plethora of little fixes which we won’t extensively list here. Enjoy. We’ll be pushing out a 4.0 release soonish… [Read more…]
