2.1 Firmware Update

AppleWell, 2.1 Firmware is to be released today for the iPhone. It was already released for the iPod Touch on Tuesday after Apple’s “Let’s Rock” event along with the new iPod Touch which gained an external speaker and external volume control. The new firmware is claimed to contain many “bug fixes”. We’ll see once it’s out if there are any additional features hidden in the firmware.

Of course, the new firmware has only been out for a couple days for the Touch and so it’s not jailbroken yet. The biggest hurdle seems not to be in the firmware, but the update to iTunes 8. It seems it has been designed to detect and prevent the Pwnage exploit. Thankfully, according to the Dev Team, unless Apple changes their hardware, they can still hack it.

So, for now, if you’re iPhone is jailbroken, don’t upgrade to the new firmware. Watch our Jailbreak page for the latest info. We’ll be upgrading one of our iPhones to test the new firmware and get it ready to test the newest jailbreak applications.

  1. Hi,

Just wondering where is the new iphone 2.1 firmware, it doesnt pop in itunes and cat seem to find it anywhere…

    Thanks

  2. It’s coming out today … just not quite yet. I would save myself some grief and don’t even try to get it till late Saturday or Sunday. As usual, I’m sure everyone will be after it, and things will be very slow and fail when it comes to downloading it.

  3. Yeah totaly true about that :-D Am just really excited about that new release, just hope it really “does” fixes those know bugs…

    Cheers

  4. DJContagious says

Isnt it supposed to “Drastically” improve the battery life of the 3G? Thats what i heard

  5. It’s out right now :D

  6. WOOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOOOO :-D

    About bloody time :-D

    Cheeers

  7. IT IS OUT

iPhone version 2.1 contains many bug fixes and improvements, including the following:
    • decrease in call set-up failures and call drops
    • significantly improved battery life for most users
    • dramatically reduced time to backup to iTunes
    • improved email reliability, notably fetching email from POP and Exchange accounts
    • faster installation of 3rd party applications
    • fixed bugs causing hangs and crashes if you have lots of 3rd party applications
    • improved performance in text messaging
    • faster loading and searching of contacts
    • improved accuracy of the 3G signal strength display
    • repeat alert up to two additional times for incoming text messages
    • option to wipe data after ten failed passcode attempts
    • Genius playlist creation

  8. So who is upgrading, and who is waiting for Dev Team?

    • i am waiting because i love winterboard, five icon dock, and catorgories

    • I’m waiting on my personal iPhone, I’m upgrading Brooke’s though :)

    • I am witing on my phone also and upgrading my wife’s.

    • I’m updating … I always do … ;)

    • ConfusiousNeverHadAniPhone says

I keep looking at the 2.1 and thinking, shall I? Then I look at what Cydia are doing and I think, no I will wait for pwnage for 2.1 because I love some of the stuff Winterboard is allowing me to do with my iFone ;-)

    • Sorry but I have to say that I am waiting for the DevTeam. A jailbroken iPhone is a much funner device (yes pun intended re: Steve Jobs quote @ the Let’s Rock Keynote about the iTouch). I can be impatient. But i’ve learned my lesson when it comes to my iPhone. I’m sticking with 2.0.2 for the time being.

  9. I don’t know about anyone else here, but I was kinda forced to revert back to Apple’s 2.0.2 firmware. I’m not exactly sure how it had happened. I had upgraded my iTunes to 8.0, and for a little while my iPhone 3G was working fine. Up until the point where I was downloading an application, and was also trying to reply a Facebook message. That’s when everything went to crap! The iPhone had froze, and I had to reboot. But then it was just stuck on the pineapple logo (the phone was jailbroken with the latest Pwnage Tool). It was a good thing that I didn’t have anything too important going on at the time, because I would have been screwed! So, I had rushed home to take care of the problem. I tried to restore and re-Pwn the iPhone but it was wasn’t working with the iTunes 8.0. So, I wiped my Mac free of 8.0 and revert back to the 7.7. And it still didn’t work. So finally, I had to factory restore the iPhone. That’s when I just gave up and settled for the 2.0.2 firmware. But, now that the 2.1 firmware is out. I’ll at least have that to test run for a little while until the iPhone Dev Team come up with those patches for the new horrid iTunes 8.0. I was excited at 1st to see and use the 8.0. Now I just regret the upgrade. So, those who haven’t upgraded to the iTunes 8.0. STAY AWAY!!! STAY AWAY FROM ITUNES 8.0 IF YOU HAVE A JAILBROKEN IPHONE/IPHONE 3G/IPOD TOUCH!!! Needless to say, lesson learned. And now waiting for the new solutions from the Dev Team.

To all the Pwnage Tool developers…you guys ROCK!!!! Keep up the awesome work. We all appreciate it!!!

    • ConfusiousNeverHadAniPhone says

Warning!! – I up-graded to iTunes 8.0 and now none of my apple store apps will work on my jailbroken 16 g iFone!! I agree with what TJ says – stay clear of 8.0 until the awesome dev team get everything sorted. Boy, are those guys at apple sweating now ;-)

  10. Phil, Washington DC says

the update (2.1) shows up in my iTunes! 10:04am ESTWant to update for the bug fixes. I hate the slow performance of this product, they should have had this before the release of the phone. Hope it solves the lags and app crashes.

    • Slow performances are sometimes caused by…too many installed apps.

I just hope it fixes the crashes and loooooong backups. We need incremental backups!

  11. I’m downloading it right now. Didn’t see it quickly available in iTunes so I just used the ‘Check for Update’ on the iPhone screen. I’m anxious to see what gets updated.

  12. The Dev team is unusually silent about this upgrade and what they are planning.

  13. I just upgraded my 2.0.2 iPhone 3G and the phone does not start!
I get the apple logo and after a while the loading animations starts on top, the mobile starts to vibrate 2 times every 5 seconds and nothing happens!

Although i can see the iphone from iTunes and now trying restore…
    I’ll keep you updated!

    • I get the same thing with my original iphone. vibrating twice every 5 seconds or so. I was jailbroken, that must be the issue. Restoring doesn’t work, need to go back to bare 2.1 install.

  14. hi to all plz can someone answer its really important to me

the new firmware 2.1 does it contain arabic language did apple add this feature or no plz answer thank you …

  15. no new features except for genius…
    i’m dissappointed…
was hoping for turn by turn gps

    • If that’s the case, it would be called 2.0.3, wouldn’t it? I don’t think Genius would constitue for a 2.1, but who knows. I hope people find SOMETHING worth upgrading for… Does it at least fix bugs?

    • Isn’t Genius a new feature for iTunes?

  16. Worked fine the second time! I had the iPhone in silent mode the first time… might that be an issue!???? who knows!

Everything is fine now so thats great!

  17. I’ve forgotten, so maybe someone can help me. I’ve got a jailbroken 3G 2.02. Once the new firmware is hacked, will I have to upgrade (thus losing my jailbroken apps), then jailbreak (and download the apps again)? Or, is there a way to avoid losing the apps?

  18. edge logo is different…
after updating, it said iphone is activated..
    backups are faster
but i cant see any genius??? any thoughts?

  19. very happy with update i have bars at work now very very happy i was going to wait so i didn’t lose my jailbreak but owell. all my apps seem to be running well to but i will have to play with them more. but i do not see genius anywhere?

  20. Have anyone tried to winpwn existing jaibroken 2.0.2 using new fw 2.1 or trying the quickpwn method? It may work and upgrade our iPhones without waiting for new winpwn release, anybody?

  21. did you say you did not lose your jailbreak.

    • no, i guess what he meant is that he was going to wait, so he won’t lose jailbreak, but oh well he updated anyway, therefore jailbreak is gone for now

  22. as soon as I get home I’ll update I’m at school right now.

    • According to the release notes it “contains many bug fixes and improvements”.

      The complete list includes:

      * decrease in call set-up failures and call drops
      * significantly improved battery life for most users
      * dramatically reduced time to backup to iTunes
      * improved email reliability, notable fetching email from POP and Exchange accounts
      * faster installation of 3rd party applications
      * fixed bugs causing hangs and crashes if you have lots of 3rd party applications
      * improved performance in text messaging
      * faster loading and searching of contacts
      * improved accuracy of the 3G signal strength display
      * repeat alert up to two additional times for incoming text messages
      * option to wipe data after ten failed passcode attempts
      * Genius playlist creation

  23. right on,,,,, updates available in India too for 3g, done it and guess what Brooke … Most of my games and apps from cydia r still der on my iPhone. Categories, customize and five icon dockwont won’t work though. Also cydia seems to b der in my applications folder but no icon on home. Did any1 else c this?

  24. 1.1.4 for life

  25. very nice update !!! it works great and no crash!!! i’ve installed thru itunes 132 applications ( almost 2 gb ) in 30 minutes!!! works great. message auto-correction feature disabled. wipe data on 10 wrong password. hope that i won’t get more troubles with the software. the crash with the 3rd party apps it’s solved :)

  26. I hope the dev’s get this cracked asap because i wan’t this new firmware i hate it sometimes i open sms and the keypad just moves so slow and scrolling through my contacts is also a bit slow just not as responsive as it used to be. It’s not completely ennoying but enough to need it fixed, also app crashing hopefully those are all issued in this realease as i suspect it is.

  27. Lewis Engladn says

I got my update around 9 this morning GMT. havn’t upgraded my Touch, goin’ to wait for the GENIUSES at dev team to jailbreak it and release the tool. Also got iTunes 8 so a real apple update day, can’t wait to see what it can do.

  28. ConfusiousNeverHadAniPhone says

How many others of you are finding that using 2.02 on iTunes 8.0 is screwing up your OFFICIAL apple app store stuff? Now what do I do? – leave my pwned stuff on 2.02 and wait for the dev team, or do I up-grade to 2.1 – phew, life is tough ;-)

    • I feel ya man i really want to update but i dont know if its worth it.

    • ConfusiousNeverHadAniPhone says

Hmmm, really depends on how long we would have to wait for the dev team!! They are probably busy at this moment cracking 2.1 – anyone from dev team reading this PLEASE give us a rough idea.

Daxter do what you gotta do, I will probably sleep on it and do something in the morning!!!!!

  29. i’ve upgraded my iphone with itunes to 2.1 and it’s still unlocked. my sim is not ATnT but i still have service and i can call.

if u have 2.0.X iphone u can upgrade it to 2.1 safly no need to unlock.

    but it’s not jailbroken guys…

    • ConfusiousNeverHadAniPhone says

Hi Amir, unlocking is not my problem – cannot unlock 3G anyway! – But I have jailbroken so I can use the excellent Cydia stuff and so I am fighting against going up to 2.1 because I know it will mean my having the boring apple stuff!! Interesting that you are still unlocked though on 2.1.

    • because I’ve first generation iphone.

  30. if i upgrade to the 2.1 will i be able to still use it on tmobile? any1 know

    • Yes, as mentioned above the new update doesnt alter the baseband so your phone will remain unlocked. (im on Orange UK)

Ive upgraded my 1st gen from WinPwned 2.0.2 to 2.1 with no problems at all. The phone does seem to run faster, especially the contacts. Time will tell im sure..

Your phone will no longer be jailbroken though, so no cydia or installer. I for one am not that bothered about cydia or installer since there are plenty of apps in the app store.

      Hope this helps! Cheers

  31. will erase my hacks if update

  32. I found a website that shows you how to jail break the 2.1 firmware for ipod touch (1st gen)
    http://www.ipodtouchfans.com/forums/showthread.php?t=97315
i’ve tryed it and it works fine :)

  33. I cuold not wait for WinPwn or Qickpwn for Windows (I did this before even the MAC version came out) – it was a bit of work, but worth it! iPhone 2G jailbroken, unlocked and activated running 2.1 firmware and iTunes 8.0 – all syncing is good and all apps (Cydia and appstore – I don’t use Installer) are working great!

To summarize – if I had to redo everything anyway – I uninstalled iTunes 8, made sure all of ANY itunes related software was uninstalled, and installed iTunes 7.7.x and then restored and then restored again with Winpwn 2.5. THEN I uninstalled AGAIN! :) and then re-installed iTunes 8.0 (no syncing in the meantime) and updated to 2.1 with 8.0. AND IMPORTANT – after you are done updating to 2.1 with 8.0 and you uninstall 8.0 to prepare for the quickpwn as Big Boss has instructed, BEFORE you install the 7.7.x iTunes delete ANY itunes*.itl file that does not have a specific date appended to it – iTunes 7.7.x will not start and 8.0 did an automatic sync (although short) without asking and even though I unchecked automatic syncing during the install of 8.0) WHEW! Any questions? Sorry but I went through a very long process and I hope I help!

    Big Boss’s Instructions:
Step 1) Download the 2.1 3g firmware or 2g firmware.

Step 2) Install itunes v8 – you can get all versions of iTunes here.

Step 3) Update the iphone with iTunes and make sure it is activated!

    Step 4) Uninstall iTunes v8

Step 5) Uninstall Apple Mobile Device Support (From Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel)

    Step 6) Install itunes v7.7.*

Step 7) Download quickpwn with the correct 2.1 bundle inside it here.

    Step 8) Run quickpwn…select your iPhone1,2_2.1_5F136_Restore.ipsw or iPhone1,1_2.1_5F136_Restore.ipsw from step 1.

Step 9) You can select cydia and installer and logos if you wish (make sure you select Cydia).

Step 10) When it is finished the phone will reboot…Cydia and Installer will NOT be visible

Step 11) Download TotalCommander and t-pot addon

Step 12) Install TotalCommander and in the left pane navigate to T-PoT.1.1.zip and click on it. It will install t-pot automatically.

Step 13) Download the mobileinstallation patch

Step 14) Use Totalcommander to install patched mobileinstallation to /System/Library/PrivateFrameWorks/MobileInstallation.framework … clickon the dropdown box [-\-] top left and select network neighborhood then t-pot. Reme, ber to back up your original mobileinstallation first!

Step 15) Still in TotalCommander delete /private/var/mobile/Library/Caches/com.apple.mobile.installation.plist

Step 16) Reboot the phone and all is good!

  34. I can’t update to 2.1 from iTunes…is there a site where I can download just the file and then replace 2.0.1 that is on my phone now?

    • If you are on windows, read my post – if you are on OSX downlaod the latest Pwn. If you cannot update then one of these options is necessary. Are you JB’ed?

    • Yes I am JB and on Windows. Where do I find your post please…sorry new at this.

    • Right above this one ^^^^^^ scroll up, but if you are new at this I suggest you just downgrade your iTunes to 7.7.x and restore with the 2.0.2 firmware, repwnn, and wait for the new Windows version of Pwn. Then you can update to 8.0, and Pwn with the 2.1 firmware. BUT, then, again, if you’re JB’ed, you can follow the steps in the post.

    • @Jesse
How did you get JB’ed? You really need to know about iTunes AND the iPhone to JB 2.1 at this time.
