Workaround to Unlock & Jailbreak an iPhone 2G to 2.1

iClarified Now, I’m not sure if it works with a 3G iPhone, so feel free to tell me in the comments. The guys over at iClarified (which are notorious for findings and mods) have made an article on how to Unlock/Jailbreak an iPhone 2G. Here’s the link to the article; it also contains download links for everything you will need to do it with. Looks like a easy-ish process, but that’s for you to judge!

  1. I’ve been reading everywhere that this method often doesn’t activate your phone, so if you’re not a legitimate user you should probably wait for winpwn.

    Cheers

    • I have used the method that iclarified explained in their article and it work flawlessly for my iphone 2G.

    • no not true….well kinda.
you must choose the unlock option in QuickPWN to activate iPhone, unless you have a legit iphone plan with at&t.
just yesterday i did a 1.1.4 to 2.1 with no problems whatso ever. easiest upgrade ever under 30 minutes!!!

but you tell you the truth i miss my customized 1.1.4 iphone. 2.1 doesn’t give you really anything on the 2G iPhone except for app store.

this is my second day now on 2.1 and I miss my 1.1.4 iPhone =(

  2. I just did it and it worked. I’m on a 1st gen iPhone in Canada on Rogers network. 2.1 firmware rocks. LOL.

  3. hmm but this is a normal way to unlock 2.1 on 2g iPhone using QuickPWN I made it almost week ago at it still work ;)

  4. iambored8907 says

I am so confused! Jailbreak and unlock for 2.1 has been available since 2.1 was released. Unlock of course only for 2G but jailbreak/pwnage works on both. Quickpwn for 2.1 has been out since the fw has been released, and pwnagetool and quickpwn for mac shortly after. I have a 2G pwned and unlocked and a 3G pwned.

  5. Did it the first day quickpwn came out. Works like a charm. 2.1 is worth it. Much more stable

  6. I was also expecting some kind of new solutions, and was confused then disappointed. But, it could be useful for those who are behind the news or in need of detailed instructions. (but quickpwn is pretty easy to follow anyway…)

  7. this is the same way i did with my 1st gen i just recently got about a week ago, it was still on 1.1.3.

    all i did was:
    – update to 2.1 fw normally with itunes
    – use quickpwn to jailbreak and unlock

since phone was new, to me, i did not have to restore to any backup.

is there something i’m missing that different that iclarified pointed out???

  8. This is almost the same thing that BigBoss has had on sleepers.net since Quickpwn 2.1 came out. This method does work for people who have a non-AT&T carrier. I’m using a T-Mobile sim card and it works. Jailbreaking/unlocking by “pwning” has been available to Mac (Pwnage tool/Quickpwn) users for a couple weeks and to PC (Quickpwn 2.1) users for about a week. Still waiting for Winpwn 3.0 so I can change a few more options.

  9. ive just run this process using on my 2g and it runs perfectly.
just one thing when i reconnect and run itunes it sees the phone and gives me two options either set up as a new phone or restore from backup. what do i choose?
    many thanks

    • hey danny, you will need to choose set up as new phone not restore from backup. I’ve read issues that specifically relate to back to the restore from backup option being picked…choose new phone and you should be all set.

    • thanks but I must have been lucky, i clicked restore and everything works perfectly with all previous phone settings restored, even messages and web pages being viewed.

Here is the link to bigbosses way (its been up since September 12th the day 2.1 was released) You guys are a little slow on the pwn community :)

  11. yeah i know, i was hanging out for winpwn or ziphone, as im not an expert on iphone. this solution looked straight forward so i took the plunge. i clicked restore in itunes 8 and so far so good my iphone has rebooted and is now syncing my songs. fingers crossed! i’ll keep you posted in case there is anyone out there who is a tad worried about bricking there iphone and is curious if this solution works.
    thanks

  12. I don’t c what the big deal is iv used quick pwn to unlock and jailbreak 2G with 0 problems

  13. I’m confushed. The article presented this information as if it the guide was something new or a solution to a problem that’s hasn’t been solved yet. Am I missing something here? Is there a part of this guide that couldn’t be done before? Someone please explain the madness!

  14. your right it is nothing new, but i was nervous about updating, unlocking and jail breaking since i did it the first time with ziphone on 1.1.3. i guess i saw this all in one place and decided to give it a go.
my iphone is still syncing all my media, i so want to start playing with the apps store.

  15. hey DjContagious….., iClarified only posted a tutorial on how to go step by step on jailbreaking and unlocking a first generation iPhone, they didnt discover it….and yes this works perfectly fine and also has been out since forever…this is nothing new

  16. This is new???
This was out when Quickpwn was 1st released a few weeks ago, and this has been posted a lot of site (BigBoss site to name 1) for weeks…

  17. I just tried this last weekend and did not worked. I always get an 1606 error. I am on a 1.1.4 unlocked and jailbreaked with Ziphone 3.0. Can anyone help? Thanks.

  18. What nomon said,

This isnt new…It has been unlocked and jailbroken for a few weeks now including myself having T-Mobile on my 2G with 2.1

  19. i was on a 1st gen phone that was ziphoned to 1.1.4.

    I used Winpwn 2.5 on Vistax64 to unlock/activate/jb to 2.0.2.

Then I Updated to 2.1 with iTunes 8, knowing that phone will remain unlocked/activated because baseband remained unchanged. Of course phone was not JB anymore.

I used quickpwn 2.1 for windows to JB.

I am writing this post with my unlocked/activated/JB phone, which is working perfectly. No problems of any sort.

  20. forgot to mention that i lost a bit of space due to Cydia and 3d part app. I Updated and not restored to 2.1 because i knew phone will remain unlocked and activated. I wasn’t sure that i was not going to have an issue with activation under quickpwn. I am waiting to see how Winpwn 3 works.

    I have heard 2.2 is coming out…….

  21. Can I upgrade from 2.0.1 directly to 2.1 and then use QuickPwn to jailbreak it? My wife’s phone is an unlocked, jailbroken 2.0.1….

    • Yup! All you do bigdaddy is put the phone into DFU mode (I always do to be safe) and restore to the factory 2.1 software, once done, run quickpwn, and youre good to go!

    • Nathan: Just finished doing exactly that… It worked like a charm! Thanks a ton for your help!

  22. So guys is this safe to follow? I’m currently on jb/unlock 1.1.4 2G iPhone from ZiPhone…Thanks in advance :)

  23. I used this today and it worked perfect!!! Jailbreak and unlock from 2.0.2 to 2.1 was quick and painless!

  24. I went from 1.1.4 (iLiberty+) to 2.1 using this method. Worked perfect! I am in Canada on the Rogers bankruptcy plan.

Worked so well on my phone, that I just now fished upgrading the wife’s phone. (Normally I don’t upgrade her’s until I know there are no problems — that’s the last thing I need is to wreck her phone and listen to naggin)

  25. just to let you know that everything works perfectly, my iphone has been updated from 1.1.3 to 2.1 with no issues as far as i can tell. youtube, e-mail, apps store, cydia, maps…everything works so far.

a big thank you to everyone involved.

  26. It urks me to the nth to see people referring to the 1st gen iPhone as the 2G just because Apple screwed up by marketing their 2nd gen iPhone as iPhone 3G, rather than iPhone with 3G.

    1st Gen = 1G
    2nd Gen = 2G = 3G??

    • Yes, I agree. It is very unfortunate as many people are getting confused by this and download the wrong ipsw file to restore. Also, many try to unlock the second gen using winpwn, which is impossible

  27. i had a 3g iphone version 2.0 jailbroken. i just installed itunes 8.0 and went to upgrade my iphone to 2.1. after it updated my firmware, my iphone won’t start. itunes recognizes it, syncs, but won’t finish its backup process. the iphone itself just stays on the apple screen, usually with a spinning white circle, and buzzes over and over again. what do i do??

    • you can always restore to 2.1 in iTunes and try again…
after itunes recognized it, dont choose restore from backup – try selecting set-up as new phone…

hope it works for ya man….hang in there…i know the spinning wheel of death on an iphone = panic!

  28. Successfully jailbroke and unlocked my 2G (first generation) iPhone using quickpwn.

I was on 2.0.2 jailbroken and unlocked using winpwn 2.5. Restored to 2.1 using iTunes 8 and QuickPwned it with my Entel PCS (a non-legit chilean carrier) SIM inside the phone.

    Cheers.

  29. i know this isn’t the right place to post this but i need help…
after unlocking and jailbreaking my iphone with this method, i’ve been playing happily until i tried installing mivtones to my 1st gen v2.1 iphone, cydia asked me to restart springboard, i pressed restart but got the spinning wheel of death!!
after 10 mins i held the power and home buttons to power off the phone but it just stays on the apple boot screen and won’t start springboard.
after about an hour i connected to itunes and itunes trys to back up the phone, it gets most of the way then the phone reboots and the process starts again.
any help would be greatly appreciated.
i don’t have SSH installed and apart from re running QuickPWN i don’t know what to do.
    thanks in advance, dan

    • Try to put the phone in DFU mode and restore a fresh 2.1 FW.

    • thank you, I used quickpwn in the end to reflash the restore firmware on this thread and as if by magic the iPhone came out of it’s coma once the process completed!
In my case ignorance isn’t always bliss!!!!!!

  30. updated my phone 2G from 1.1.2 to 2.1 using QuickPwn 2.1. update went on successfully, I made sure that iselected unlock phone option.
After the successful update I still dont have any signel with my SIM, I am not in a postion to make any phone calls. Please help me out
