Using QuickPwn to Jailbreak the iPhone 3G Firmware 2.2

I recently upgraded to firmware 2.2 and finally had time to jailbreak it. Jailbreaking allows you to add programs and change settings that Apple doesn’t allow. It also lets you change your icons, sounds and dock. The first thing you need to do is download QuickPwn for firmware 2.2 (also works on firmware 2.0.1, 2.0.2, 2.1). You should also sync your iPhone before you jailbreak so everything gets backed up.

Connect your iPhone to your computer via a USB cable. Then click the blue arrow in the bottom right corner to continue.

QuickPwn will search your computer for the 2.2 firmware.

Select your choice for Cydia or Installer, or both. There’s also the option for changing your boot logo. If you change your boot logo it will change it to the pinapple with a bite out of it. There’s no choices for boot logos. If you want to change the boot logo to something custom you must use PwnageTool to create a custom firmware.

The program will warn you to double check that the iPhone is connected. Click the blue arrow.

Follow the onscreen instructions. They will tell you to wait for recovery mode, hold the home button for 5 seconds, hold home and power buttons for 10 seconds, release power and hold home for 30 more seconds.

Once you see the following screen you’re finished on the computer, just wait for your iPhone to finish.

Here’s some shots of the iPhone during the jailbreaking process:

NOTE: The first time I ran the jailbreak I used my dock and the jailbreak didn’t work. It just made my iPhone reboot over and over. I restored and tried with just the USB cable and it worked fine.

If this is the first time you’ve jailbroken your iPhone you can check out our Cydia category and see what apps are available there. If you have any questions you can post it in our forum or email us through our about page.

  1. does this work for windows or just mac?

  2. Does this work for iTouch as well?

A week ago I posted my recent upgrade from 1.1.4 to 2.2 experience. Well, one week has passed and although I like the range of apps available in the app store and the new and improved things in the firmware I find it also less stable and sometimes (in some areas) a little bit slower than 1.1.4.

So, basically let me know (you or anyone else) if you notice some difference in the performance and stability of your former 2.2 “original” iphone and your recently 2.2 jailbroken one (if you don’t, which I assume will be the case, the issues are related to the firmware and not to the jailbreak procedure)

    Thanks

  4. I went through the process on my 1st Gen 8GB and it kept rebooting over and over….I then restored to basic 2.2 and was able to QuickPwn. I then was able to restore all my settings, music and apps.

    • The issue of rebooting over & over again seems to be related to using quickpwn after apps have been added to the phone. Updating or restoring from backup prior to jailbreaking both have caused the issue for me. Restore the firmware 2.2, run quickpwn, install key apps from cydia, then restore from backup. Thebigboss.org has good instructions for this method that allows jailbreak app data to be restored as well.

    • I experienced this once with 2.1. Mine was due to having the 5 icon dock installed and when I did the restore, it did the endless reboot. I reinstalled the firmware, jailbroke it, installed 5 icon dock and then did a restore of my backup and all was well. Now I just do it in that order to prevent issues… or I could uninstall 5 icon dock before I backup and upgrade.

    • mine did the same thing but I can’t get it out of the pineapple screen…

  5. I don’t like restoring from backups in iTunes now. I just use SSH. When I upgraded to 2.2 my iPhone wouldn’t backup after I restored from a iTunes backup. BTW I used my dock on my 1st gen and it work fine.

  6. I really want to update, but dont want to mess my softunlock up as it already drives me crazy with every reboot :(

  7. … you forgot to deselect Installer during the jailbreak :P Hahahahaha

  8. You can choose whatever boot logo you like if you use LogoMe. It is available in Cydia. Just used it on my 2.2 jailbroken. Worked fine for my 2.1 also. :)

    • Does LogoMe work on 2.2?
I’ve heard it has problems with the latest firmware.
But today i saw an update for it to 1.0.3
Although the change log didnt have anything mentioned about compatibility with 2.2., does it still work with this firmware?
      Thanx, in advance.

    • it worked for me

    • worked for me on 2.2 fine. I had heard the same thing but I gathered from the update it would work on 2.2 so I tried and it worked fine.

  9. modenotready says

I already upgraded my iPod touch 8GB from 2.1 to 2.2. After the jailbreak i freshly reinstalled back all my favorite cydia apps, and it worked well. Some of my apps are vwallpaper, cycorder, mxtube, sbsettings and more. I would recommend installing it again from cydia rather than backing it up with aptbackup.app or through ssh. Makes it less possible for crashes and permission problems. As for my 2G iPhone, it’s still on 2.1. I don’t feel like upgrading just yet. Still waiting for a good reason to do so.

Btw, about changing your own bootlogo with quickpwn, Yes you can!

  10. nnnnnn

  11. Brook the junky 2.2 update causes some programs to crash. Their are instructions on some apps that tells you to reboot if the app crashes. It seems 2.2 retains memory and when it gets full the app will crash, reboot clears the memory.

  12. i want to clear my iphone, everything has to be gone, beacause when i jailbroke the last 2 times all my apps got copied again, so the phone runs 1/3 of the speed it should have :( but if you use quickpwn, should you uprade to 2.2 first, then jailbrake? (i will not backup or restore)

    • You can choose to backup/restore and not install the apps. I have iTunes set to not automatically sync when the iPhone connects, so I can go in and change options on apps, pictures, songs, etc.

Upgrade first, then jailbreak, but I’d still reccommend you backup sync before you upgrade. You never know what you might miss…

  13. Can anyone please tell me if this QuickPwn software will still allow me to software-unlock my iphone 3G (2.1) in the future?
Or do I need to wait for Windows version to still come out?

    • Do not upgrade to 2.2 directly if you ever want to soft-unlock your 3G. More info:
      http://blog.iphone-dev.org/post/61060174/the-man-from-delmonte-he-say-yes

    • I have read this a while back but my question STILL remains!

Is the ABOVE mentioned QuickPawn tool (for Windows) now have the ability to change the stock 2.2 ipsw file and then be applied to my iphone?

Note: Currently, my 3g iphone is jailbroken and is on version 2.1

    • It sounds like you want the Pwnage tool (only current for Mac) and not QuickPwn.

QuickPwn modifies the IPSW file and applies it to your phone. It does not create a custom IPSW file you can restore via iTunes with later for maintaining your baseband.

Taken from the page I linked above:

…This applies if you have a locked iPhone 3G and you wish to update to 2.2 but preserve the iPhone’s current baseband software. Preserving the baseband will give you the maximum chance for any upcoming software unlock. To upgrade your phone to 2.2 and preserve the state of the baseband you need to create a custom .ipsw with PwnageTool. This custom .ipsw will not contain the baseband update but of course will still allow all the cool new stuff from 2.2.

There are plenty of tutorials about this process on the web, but PwnageTool contains intuitive graphics and easy to follow prompts that should have you up and running in no time at all. Please note: PwnageTool is only available for Mac OS X.

    • Thanks for clarifying Ben.
This means that I NEED to wait until Pwnage tool is available for Windows.

Can I take the “modified” ipsw file and then apply the QuickPwn to it?

Is there any trustworthy source from which we can get this “modified” ipsw for v2.2 ?

(Really appreciate your help – Thanks.)

  14. I can’t download the quickpawn.
    Please what can i do?

  15. I have tried using aptbackup over the course of the last two updates, and it has worked neither time. Even after following all the instructions, as far as I can tell, all the restore button does on my phone is trigger a popup that says the phone has to be backed up and restored first.

    • To use APT backup, install it on your phone and run the backup routine. Then you need to do a backup via iTunes. Then after an upgrade, unlock, and restore from backup, reinstall APT Backup and run the restore. I suggest you have a solid WiFi connection first though. It will take a few minutes or longer to download and re-setup your old apps. It takes around 10 minutes to do mine. I just start it, put the phone down and come back later.

    • I’m pretty sure I did all that, but it didn’t seem to work. The main thing seems to be that when I hit “backup” on APT, I don’t think it’s actually doing anything, because it literally takes less than a second to go back to the main screen.

I was going to say that it was dead to me, but I notice that it has an update on Cydia, so maybe I’ll give it another try, next time around.

    • The first backup takes a few seconds at most. Subsequent backups will only take a fraction of a second. It just writes a list of installed items in simple text, so it’s quick.

  16. brooke plz help me ,,
am still in 1.1.4 ,, i just want to ask u can i backup using time capsule and restore it in 2.2 on the same app ???

  17. I have a jailbroken 3g 8gb iphone on 2.1 – question is do i need to update to 2.2 before using QuickPwn or will QuickPwn automatically update me to 2.2? .. If I do need to update before QuickPwn will I loose all my apps?!

Thanks for any info in advance!

    -Suda

  18. Last question:

I know it says you have to browse for the IPSW file..
Where can you find the IPSW file?

  19. steve anderson says

if you install 2.2 on iphone without jailbreak all apps are fine my apps crash only when i jailbreak

    • Thanks for you reponse, I have things I got from Cydia/Installer too. I have the app back up thing so im hoping it works – im going to try it tonite.

  20. These steps look esy enough but they don’t seem to be working for me. I have a iphone 3g with the 2.2 firmware already upgraded. When I downloaded Quickpwn 2.2 it’s get stuck on the rebooting step over and over. What am I doing wrong?

    • “NOTE: The first time I ran the jailbreak I used my dock and the jailbreak didn’t work. It just made my iPhone reboot over and over. I restored and tried with just the USB cable and it worked fine. “

  21. I just upgraded to firmware 2.2 from 2.0.2 and I was able to jailbreak with QuickPwn in only 25 minutes for the whole process. I took these steps:
    1) Backed up in itunes.
    2) Backed up with AptBackup
    3) Upgraded in itunes to new firmware 2.2
    4) Immediately after upgrade I loaded QuickPwn and Jailbroke the phone by following the instructions which are given in this website.
    5) After jailbreaking it, I launched Cydia and downloaded AptBackup and chose restore.
It was done! In 25 minutes or less. Just make sure you follow these steps and the Jailbreaking steps of this site and you should not have any problems. I got all my programs back when I reinstall AptBackup from Cydia and chose the restore option. I am very glad that I did not have to reinstall all those applications and winterboard files that I have. Good luck to everybody!!!

  22. I used to use QuickPwn almost exclusively until I upgraded to Firmware 2.2 and I had major wireless issues when joining an ad-hoc computer network (needed for PDANET to work).

I had to switch to PwnageTool 2.1 to force my Iphone 3G 2.2 back down to 2.1 in order to bypass complaints in iTunes when trying the same and then having iTunes fail the upgrade (downgrade).

    PwnageTool is a saviour!

And it turns out I ran it in dumb mode (default) which is as easy to run as QuickPwn (no need to select anything.)

Now I think I’ll start using PwnageTool for all future jailbreaks as its no big deal once you run it for the first time to keep on using it.

    Cheers,
    AN

  23. Guys,
I tried to jailbreak using quickpwn. After getting almost all the way through it said to wait for my device to beboot in its mod state. after over two hours od beepong and vibrating, nothing. Now it just sits with the allpe screen and does nothing, any advice would be appreciated, thanks…..
    Stephen

  24. I can not restore using itunes because I need to enter a passcode and I can not enter one with the black screen with the apple logo showing. It is hung in this state vibrating every now and then.

    • I had the same problem with my iphone 3G. First you make sure it isn’t connected to your computer. Hold down the sleep/wake button and the home button together until it turns off. Now release the sleep/wake button but keep the home button held down. With the home button still held down plug the USB connector into your computer with itunes running. Keep the button held down until the itunes logo appears on your iphone/ipod touch and it comes up with a message in itunes telling you that you are in recovery mode and you need to restore. You can now release the home button and press restore and let itunes restore it for you.
Hope this works for you as it did for me!
