The dev team has announced the completion of the iPhone 3G unlock on their website, blog.iphone-dev.org. They will are planning to release the unlock via QuickPwn or BootNeuter by New Year’s Eve. You must be running baseband 2.11.07 or earlier. That means if you’ve upgraded firmware since 2.1 without using a tool that creates a custom firmware then you’ll have to wait until they get the newer baseband unlocked. Others who will also be waiting are 2nd Generation iPod Touch owners. Work on it’s jailbreak won’t begin until at least 2009. Finally, if you’re having troubles with the latest OS X 10.5.6 update there are some possible fixes. There are try at your own risk:
1. Replace the following plugin kexts from within IOUSBFamily.kext with the ones from 10.5.5 and then rebuild kextcache (if you don’t understand this, then you shouldn’t attempt it!)
/System/Library/Extensions/IOUSBFamily.kext/Contents/PlugIns/AppleUSBHub.kext
/System/Library/Extensions/IOUSBFamily.kext/Contents/PlugIns/IOUSBCompositeDriver.kext
2. Use a USB hub in-between the DFU device and the Mac and insert/reinsert the iPhone’s USB cable.
3. Use a PwnageTool created .ipsw on Windows! Oh the irony!

I think I’m liking the Dev Teams new blog. It was shocking at first but it is starting to grow on me! Also, YAY Dev Team for the progress on the software unlock! I know lots of people having been waiting!!
true, to bad i had to upgrade to 2.2 with quikpwn because there is no winpwn for windows.
now i have to wait for a newer baseband unlock
rather see a 2g touch jailbreak

I was told by a friend that he had a 3G iPhone running on T-Mobile with a turbosim adapter and that he was able to use T-Mobile’s 3G connection by changing the proxy values (similar to how you need to change the SwirlyMMS settings). Is this really possible? I didn’t see his phone and I’ve read everywhere else that it is not possible. Does anyone know for sure?
A turbo sim only bypasses the programming of the 3G Iphone. It does not unlock it. Therefore if your using T-Mobile like myself with a cellular data network plan you can’t use it. You can’t access you tube, safari or any app that requires a data connection. What software can I use to actually unlock the apple 3G Iphone, that will allow me to use the data network through Tmobile.
