Sneezies – Bubble Popping Fun

Available In: App Store       Price: $0.99

SneeziesAs a high school teacher, I often have to write college recommendations for my students. One of the most often used questions on these forms is: “What three words would you use to describe this student?” This is the same question I asked myself prior to writing about the iPhone app game “Sneezies”. My response would have been “simple”, “cute”, and “colorful”.

Overview
The game is best described in the four-step flowchart shown in the screen shot below. You touch the screen to drop some mysterious “sneezing powder”. You make the little bubble guy sneeze and he gets freed from his bubble, and helps you get closer to the target number that you have to free. There are two modes, classic and challenge. In the classic mode, you progress to higher levels by meeting a target number of bubble people freed. The challenge mode is similar, but you usually have higher target numbers, bonus points are available, and you often get multiple doses of the sneezing powder.

Gameplay
As mentioned above, there’s not much to the gameplay here. The goal is to get as many bubble guys to sneeze as possible. Thus, the words “chain reaction” come to mind. Although one might argue that this is simply a game of chance, I would offer that there can be an element of strategy involved when deciding where to place your sneezing powder. TIP: Since the bubble people still move a bit before they sneeze, you’ll want to get the most bang for your buck by having them carry their sneeze to other parts of the screen. This way, you’ll maximize your effect. OK, so we’re not talking Axis and Allies here, but it’s something to chew on. Several nice support features include a settings menu to disable sound and music, along with the ability to save your game from any level (both in classic and in challenge mode).

Conclusion
Where Sneezies excels most is in its simplicity and execution. Sounds like a certain favorite smartphone gadget I know. The game is fast, and the animations are very smooth. Backgrounds are bright and colorful, but as I read in one review, the game uses the same screens for several levels, so this game was not that hard to make. Still, the sound effects are well done, and you even get a calming musical soundtrack to move you through the stages. The game allows you to upload high scores so you can see how you stack up against other players. I can see younger iPhone and iPod Touch users liking this game a lot. For me, it’s a nice escape from my everyday stresses, not to mention my real life sneezing wife. Keep the sneezing powder away from her!
