Firmware 3.0 Preview: Copy & Paste

AppleOne of the longest awaited features of the iPhone is copy and paste. It works really well but does not work in all apps as claimed by Apple in the most recent announcement at the WWDC 2009 Keynote. Just hold down your finger to get the magnifying glass and place the cursor where you want to copy. When you let go you’ll get the option to Select, Select All, and Paste. It’s really easy to highlight what you want to copy, just drag the beginning and end points around until the text you want is selected. And, if you want more text selected, like from a web page, just drag up or down until the highlighted area turns into a box. Then drag the whole box around what you want highlighted.

A very nice feature is the clipboard holds rich text and pictures. Depending on where you are pasting it, you can paste font color, size, pictures, etc. that is pulled from email or a website. There are many webpages that I’m not able to copy from and they are usually the ones specifically formatted for an iPhone. Not sure why this is but the copy feature doesn’t even show up.

Copy and paste also works within the Messages app (formerly Text app). This allows you to copy an entire bubble of text and forward it or paste anywhere. You can also undo any step of cut, copy and paste by shaking your device to get an undo menu. Finally, you can also copy images or links from websites, mail or your Photo app.

Copy and paste and many other features are part of the new 3.0 firmware that will be released on June 17th. You can update your existing iPhone or iPod Touch then through the upgrade button in iTunes. It will be free for iPhones and $9.99 for the iPod Touch. All future devices sold should have the 3.0 firmware preinstalled.

you don’t hav to wait till wednesday! Just fire up your favorite torrent client look for iPhone1,2_3.0_7A341_Restore.ipsw (THIS IS THE ONE FOR THE IPHONE 3G) download it and install it on your iPhone. This is the goldmaster.

You don’t need to be a developer! It worked fine for, got my 3.0 since wednesday

  2. I’m currently on 3.0 GM (not a developer) and copy and paste works great. If you couldn’t wait like me for 3.0 go ahead and find a torrent , you do not need a dev account!!!!

  3. I upgraded mine via “other means” and I like this update a lot. Copy and paste is very useful and works well. I also have noticed battery life increase……now I’m not one of those people that buys into everything everyone says and nor should you, but I honestly have noticed a slight increase in battery life esp. with wifi on.

BTW, some applications are not working correctly….like ABC News….i’m wondering if thats the only ones…have you guys had any problems with any apps on 3.0?

batt life is only increased due to lack of a jailbreak, but i cant live without status notify, come on apple they offer phone and txt alerts, why no email preview

  4. In next firmware update 3.1, fast scroll function should also be added. I find it very unconvinient to keep sliding on screen till I reach my desired position on a long webpage. For example AIS page with long list of comments.

  5. Any news on an official jaibreak for 3.0. I cant live without mine. Also does anybody really know if the 3GS will be jaibreakable. I cant live without my hacks!

  6. I want to say that there should be a quick way to scroll to the bottom of a site like the way we can quickly get back to the top by touching near the signal bars or battery.

  7. I noticed he has multiple albums in Photos. Is that a 3.0 feature or am I just oblivious this entire 2.0 time?

    • You’re oblivious :) it syncs the different folders you have on your pc / mac as different albums to your iPhone

    • Haha…no kidding…I was thinking of CameraRoll (and I know there’s a hack for that) when I asked that question. Had a blond moment.

  8. At this time it appears like Drupal is the top blogging platform out
there right now. (from what I’ve read) Is that what you’re using on your blog?

  9. Because the admin of this site is working, no uncertainty very
quickly it will be renowned, due to its quality contents.
