Friday Night Movie Night: Bye Bye Aquatica

YouTubeI remember this game! Except it was called flOw. Apparently, a company called Ketara, rewrote the game from the ground up, called it Aquatica and put it in the App Store, without the permission of the original developer. They have since removed the app from the App Store and left this apology on their website:

Aquatica was an iPhone remake/fan version of the famous flOw game originally created by Jenova Chen of the ThatGameCompany fame. We deeply apologize for not properly crediting Jenova initially, and have already written him with a personal apology, as well. We also apologize to anyone we have upset and offended – please be assurred that we had no slightest intention of doing so. Our mistakes were caused by naivety, not malice, and we never meant to be disrepectful to anyone.

Because the game seemed to be upsetting so many, we have decided to remove it completely. We will also make sure nothing like this ever happens in the future – we understand our mistake, and will be working very hard to correct it and make amends.

Friday Night Movie Night: Waterproof iPhone 3GS

YouTubeSo I got a great idea. Let me know if you hate it or love it (vote below). Every Friday night I will post some of the best/most viewed iPhone videos on YouTube of that week. If you find any throughout the week, send them to me at video@appleiphoneschool.com. I saw this one over at iClarified.com and cnet.com. Now hopefully this is legit, but I kinda think it its. This guy drops his iPhone into a pool and it keeps working. Of course it could be like a flip video in a waterproof case, or even an iPhone waterproof case. Anyone want to test it out?

Do you like the idea of Friday Night Movie Night? (top iPhone videos from YouTube that week)

Black Chrome blackchrometheme2 Black Chrome is a unique WinterBoard theme. It contains a dock, wallpaper, lock background and 2,151 icons. Backgrounder Updated – Firmware 3.0 Compatible

Available In: Cydia       Price: Free

#Backgrounder Backgrounder, a mod that allows applications to run in the background, has been updated to version svn.r247. This version of Backgrounder is for firmware 3.0 and above. If you are on 2.2.1 or below make sure you DO NOT upgrade. The update also only enables the basic backgrounder feature…there are no extra features at this time. The developer says it will take some time to get the features working on the 3.0 firmware.

iPhone 3GS Jailbreak & Unlock Possible via 24Kpwn Exploit

Dev TeamGreat news! It looks like the same exploit used to jailbreak the 2nd Gen iPod Touch will work on the the new iPhone 3GS. No date on when it will be released but now that we know it can be jailbroke it shouldn’t be too much longer. Here’s what the Dev Team has to say:

About 5 hours ago (Thursday evening, less than a week after the 3GS launch), we were able to verify that the 24Kpwn exploit that the hybrid team used on the iPod Touch 2G is still applicable to the bootrom of the iPhone 3GS. That means we can use the same sort of technique used by our current redsn0w tool to jailbreak and unlock the iPhone 3GS.

This is great news, but how did it happen? Why didn’t Apple fix this in their normal cat&mouse fashion? Well it seems this bootrom was cut in about the August 2008 timeframe, so the unintended early reveal of 24Kpwn earlier this year didn’t affect the iPhone 3GS.

Griffin Clarifi Case & Macro Lens Review

StackI could go on and on about this case but I’m just gonna keep it short and then show you some amazing pictures. This case is basically all about the lens. Griffin has made a slide over macro lens for the camera built into the case called Clarifi. For those who don’t know, macro means really close up. You’ll see in the pictures. Here’s what the slide over lens looks like:

clarifi

The case is pretty simple and just slides onto the iPhone in two pieces. It gives you access to all your switches and buttons but if you need to clean your camera lens, you’ll have to take the case off. The top third and bottom third are covered with a grippy//rubber material. The center is a smooth plastic. I think the whole thing should be covered in the rubber material. The smooth plastic is already getting scratched. The strength of the case seems very durable and will protect your iPhone. There is also a stick on screen protector that comes in the box along with a cleaning cloth.

Of course, the other amazing thing is, the case works with the new iPhone 3GS which already has macro and autofocus. Speaking of autofocus, without it on the 3G, you have to kinda move your iPhone closer and further away until you get what you’re shooting into focus. Either iPhone you have, this case is AWESOME and sells for $30.99. And now for the proof. First with the iPhone 3G. [Read more…]

For more info, hit up his website.

Pro Gear Setup for iPhone 3GS Video Recording

CameraMacBreak recently took the iPhone 3GS and hooked it up to a bunch of pro level video gear. They used a PED3 iPhone stand to mount the iPhone. Kinda crazy idea. Pretty sure they spent more on the equipment than the iPhone. Here’s the video:

LiveClock Mod on 3.0 Firmware

Available In: Cydia       Price: Free

LiveClock I have had quite a few people asking me about the LiveClock mod (a mod that displays the current time on your Clock icon) and whether or not it works on the 3.0 firmware….the answer is, yes!

The first time you install the mod, it will be over the top of your Stock icon which makes it look weird because it will have two hour, minute and second hands. All you need to do is go into WinterBoard and disable LiveClock. Your iPhone and/or iPod Touch will respring. Now, go back into WinterBoard and uncheck the LiveClock Disabled option…your device will respring again and voilà you will have the LiveClock mod (working correctly). You can get this mod via the iSpazio source.

Word Tower – Think Tetris with Letters

Available In: App Store       Price: $0.99

Word Tower Word Tower is like playing Tetris with letters. I love the developer’s description of the app – “What do you get when you mix up Scrabble, Boggle and Tetris and add the flipping, shaking and sliding that only the iPhone/iTouch can do? WORD TOWER!”

That is exactly what it is…you have to created words from the letters. You create words by dragging your finger over the letters that form a word. If you create a word, the letters will disappear however, you have to do it quickly because more letters are falling. The cool part is that you can “grab” the letters and move them around as they are falling so that you can strategically create more words.

As you move through the levels, new blocks are introduced. Some of the blocks give you additional points when used, some have to be used a certain number of times before they disappear…etc. The one that gets me is the snowflake. When a snowflake drops you have to shake your device, before it touches another letter, which then changes all your letters. So here you are building a strategy and along comes a snowflake and messes it all up!

WeatherIcon Update 2.1.3

Available In: Cydia       Price: Free

WeatherIcon There was another update to the WeatherIcon mod. The updated says that it adds “more 3.0 compatibility.” When I tested it, I was able to enable the Status Bar Image and Temp but, they are not aligned correctly. They are too high on the Status Bar and are only partially visible.

The update does make the app compatible with the 2.2 firmware again. When I installed the update on an iPhone running 2.2, it did not go into Safe Mode and both the Icon and Status Bar worked correctly. So, you should be safe to install it now. [Read more…]

Add Emoticons to the Status Bar

Available In: Cydia       Price: Free

MakeItMine I know many of you are probably familiar with the app MakeItMine which allows you to easily customize your Carrier Logo and Banner (that is the area where the time is located on the Status Bar). One cool thing that I just found is that you can add emoticons to your Status Bar using MIM (MakeItMine).

When you open the app, just enter the emoticons like you would your custom text (see note below). Simple and easy.

Spell Number – Free Emjoi [Emoticons]

Ok, this is not new information however, I felt like I should write about it because I am highly confused as to why a $1.99 Emoji app is in the Top Paid Apps when you can get Emoji for free!

For those of you who do not know what Emoji is, according to Wiki, it is “the Japanese term for the picture characters or emoticons.” It basically enables those cute little emoticons on your iPhone or iPod Touch. Just to make one thing clear, Emoji are already technically on your iPhone and iPod Touch, Emoji applications just enable them.

psx4iphone, PlayStation Emulator, on the iPhone 3GS

psx4iphone Well, ZodTTD is at it again. He has got psx4iphone, a PlayStation emulator, running on an iPhone 3GS and says that it is pretty sweet.

“I now have psx4iphone running very speedy on the 3GS. It’s at the point where Final Fantasy 7 is fullspeed at very least without sound. The build is rough around the edges, as you can’t switch games without restarting the emulator, and only memory card saves are currently working, no save states just yet. Both these issues are being worked on.”

Below is a video demo of psx4iphone running on an iPhone 3GS.
