Jailbreak 3.0.1 Firmware

Dev TeamIt’s pretty easy to jailbreak 3.0.1. You can use redsnow but you just point it towards 3.0 firmware file when it asks for it. This update only fixes the SMS exploit that was recently announced. Here’s the official word from the Dev Team:

Short version:

You can re-use redsn0w v0.8 we released a few weeks ago to jailbreak today’s 3.0.1 update. Just let iTunes update or restore you to official 3.0.1 then run redsn0w. The only “trick” is that when redsn0w asks you to identify the IPSW used, point it at the 3.0 IPSW instead of the 3.0.1 one. After the jailbreak, reinstall ultrasn0w 0.9 if you need the unlock.

More details:

The 3.0.1 release is a “branch” from 3.0 that occurs (code-wise) before all the 3.1 betas. The programs redsn0w needs to change for the jailbreak are identical when you compare the 3.0 and 3.0.1 versions. It seems pretty much the only changes Apple made were for the SMS bug, which affects programs that redsn0w doesn’t touch. That’s why you can re-use redsn0w 0.8 on 3.0.1 even though it was written for 3.0.

And since 3.0.1 doesn’t touch the baseband either, ultrasn0w 0.9 works for those needing the soft unlock. Just install it from the repo666.ultrasn0w.com repository using Cydia as usual.

We’ll at some point fix redsn0w to recognize both 3.0 and 3.0.1 IPSW’s, but really that’s the only change that would be made to it. Everything else would be identical, so there’s no need to wait for the “proper” version that recognizes the 3.0.1 IPSW as valid.

3.0.1 Jailbreak Info (via Dev-Team)

3.0.1 Jailbreak The Dev-Team has tweeted that the redsn0w jailbreak does work on the 3.0.1 firmware however, you need to point it to the 3.0 IPSW. They say it even works on the iPhone 3GS and with ultrsn0w. They do not have anything posted on their blog yet. Below is their tweet.

– “Early adopters have found that redsn0w JB *already* works on 3.0.1 (just point it at 3.0 IPSW!) Even for 3GS & ultrasn0w.”

Available In: Cydia       Price: Free

iFall Theme ifalltheme2 iFall Theme is a theme that contains 35 gray icons, a wallpaper, dock, slider, page dots and status bar. The theme is missing a Maps icon. I checked the file for the theme and it doesn’t seem to include one which is kind of a bummer. The More Info for the theme says that there is a .psd file (template) but, I could find one. Besides the missing icon, it is a pretty decent theme. Not too busy, sleek and simple. You can get iFall Theme via the BigBoss source. [Read more…]

Camera Roll Can’t Handle 10,000 Pictures *FIXED*

PhotosLast night I was taking some pictures and video and went back to review them and there weren’t in my camera roll. I didn’t think much of it because my iPhone is jailbroken and things like that happen when you test as many apps as we do. I decided to respring my springboard and try again. That didn’t work so I rebooted. Still didn’t work. Now I’m getting worried. I really don’t want to restore my iPhone and start all over again. I did notice that the pictures I was taking were showing up in the little thumbnail at the bottom left of the camera app each time I took one. I then thought my iPhone might be full so, I plugged into iTunes to see. Nope, I had plenty of room. Ah ha! I thought I figured it out. Most cameras name pictures starting with img_0001 and go to img_9999 and start over. I thought it had done that and the pics were starting over at the top of my camera roll… nope.

I then decided to plug in my iPhone and see if the pics and vids were there. They were! And guess what I found? The filenames of the pics not showing up are img_10001 through img_10005. This means there is a major bug in Apple’s firmware. I can’t see the photos in any other apps either. Now I can’t upload them to flickr, facebook, twitter, youtube, etc. The worst part of all? I have no idea how to fix it. The only way I can think of is to restore my iPhone. If you have an idea, I’d love to try it. I’m quite annoyed that it doesn’t work anymore.

Update: I have found a fix:

1. Sync your iPhone to backup and copy all photos off your camera roll using your computer.

2. Use a directory browser such as PhoneView (Mac – download), iPhone Browser (PC – download) or SSH to delete these folders:

3. Now just take a picture and you’ll see it shows up in the camera roll. I noticed that taking a screenshot still used the old numbering scheme. I went back and deleted everything again and rebooted my iPhone and then it works fine.

iPhone SMS Bug Released Today – Leaves all iPhones Vulnerable to Attack

SMS Bug According to Forbes, today two researchers Charlie Miller and Collin Mulliner plan on releasing a bug in the iPhone SMS during the Black Hat cybersecurity conference in Las Vegas. The bug is said to allow a person to take over an iPhone via SMS.

“Using a flaw they’ve found in the iPhone’s handling of text messages, the researchers say they’ll demonstrate how to send a series of mostly invisible SMS bursts that can give a hacker complete power over any of the smart phone’s functions. That includes dialing the phone, visiting Web sites, turning on the device’s camera and microphone and, most importantly, sending more text messages to further propagate a mass-gadget hijacking.” [Read more…]

If you also have kids you love balloon animals… you will want to check out Balloonimals.

Google Voice App Denied From App Store, Now In Cydia

Available In: Cydia       Price: Free

GV MobileApple has recently started blocking applications from the App Store that allow your iPhone to use your Google Voice account with calls, text messaging, and voicemail. It seems that one developer has taken this to the next level by releasing an app in Cydia for free. I’d write all about the drama but the fact is, right now, here’s a sweet way to get a Google Voice app on your iPhone. For the record, this app is not made by Google.

The app is called GV Mobile and it’s free! The first version was crashing for me when I would log in but now, after an update, it’s working great! To make an outgoing call you dial the number or find it in your contact list. Once you send the call, your iPhone’s stock Phone app will ring. Once you answer, it will automatically call the number you called but come from your Google Voice number. [Read more…]
