Have the USB cable plugged in

hold down the power and home button for about 30 seconds.

Release the two

Press and hold the power button.

When the apple logo comes up hold down home button with the power for about 10 seconds.

When the apple logo goes away release the power button.

Keep holding the home til itunes recognizes the phone.

I then had to do a restore of the release 3.0 (not my custom)

It is very important to not ho through a usb hub.

I then ran redsnoe to bring me back.

Going back to 2.2.1 did not help. Apple was willing to replace my 4GB phone for 199 ... I'll wait for the 3.1 to come out to fix this.

My iphone 3GS has been connecting with the wifi but then after 5 mins of it working great, I'll try to go to a website or the App Store and it wont load. So i have to go turn off wifi and turn back on so that it will work again. And when i did step one it made my iphone go into safe mode. and wifi is still the same as before!

One issue I had with my wifi but I don't know if it's an apple problem or jailbreak was that I could not use my wifi when I was using my Bluetooth. It's not that of a big deal to me but was wondering if anyone else had that problem. I'm on a 2G iPhone.

I had this issue and followed the what apple recommended.
BEWARE!!!!
After step 2 my phone never recovered. It went through the process (about 1 hour) and then reset it self. It kept resetting it self for a few hours!!!! The logo woutd come up for a while then the screen would go black then back to the logo.

I was able to enter into DFU and restore the phone back to 2.2.1 but the WIFI is still not working.

I had an issue which caused the 3GS to show only a 3G connection instead of my home wifi network. I tried airplane mode, turning off and then back on wifi and even rebooted the 3GS. Those attempts made no difference.

I use static IP addresses here at home and merely changed the IP address to another one. Bam, it works and has worked ever since. Sharing this just in case others have the same issue. Thanks for sharing the Apple Doc.

I thought jailbreaking my phone was the issue. Did a restore and did this before this came out. 3GS has a very wifi hardware. my 2G is connected ok but the 3GS show weak signal and won't connect to the internet.

I did a restore yesterday a little better but still very frustrating.
