3.1 Firmware Available Today – Genius and Ringtones

Apple Apple has just announced at the “It’s only rock and roll, but we like it.” event that the 3.1 firmware will be available today in iTunes. The update will be free for all iPhones and for iPod touches that are already on the 3.0 firmware. The 3.1 firmware includes a few new features however, they only touched on a few which include; Genius and Ringtones.

The Genius feature will make recommendations for new apps based on the apps you already own. It will give you a list of recommended apps and why they have recommended them. The Genius section will be located in the App Store application in the Features option. At the top of the Features page it will now have tabs for New, What’s Hot and Genius.

The second new feature is Ringtones. There will be over 30,000 ringtones available from all 4 of the major music labels. They ringtones will be sold for a $1.29 (USD) each.

Remember, you may want to hold off on updating until we have more info on how jailbreaking/unlocking will go.

Here’s my question. 3.1 has been around for developers since April, I believe. How come the Dev Team isn’t ready for this upgrade now, today, right this second? I don’t get it. I’ll never get it.

  5. Joe says:

    rje,
I would think the dev team HAS a ready version based on the developer 3.1 build. However, it would only be prudent for them to make sure Apple didn’t make some small change to the release version that would break jailbreak…

  6. rje says:

Know what? I don’t care anymore. I’m a jailbreaker from day one of the Dev Team, but frankly, it doesn’t matter anymore. To me it comes down to a five icon dock, and open SSH, both of which I can live without. More and more people I know have abandoned jailbreaking, mainly because of the ongoing game playing by the Dev Team. no offence intended, I know the esteem they generate. You don’t need to be jailbroken, or jailbroke as they say here, to be an iPhone power user.

I agree. It’s been a couple of months since I got a new reman and decided against the jailbreak. It’s just to time consuming for me to do 2 phones. Still miss the things I could do though.

  7. Clive says:

You ungratefull impatient lot of buggers! The DEV team do a wonderfull job and to wait a few days is well worth. Remember above all it is FREE.

    • iFoneGooner says:

Clive, I am with you, patience is a virtue ;-)

In any event, I simply could not live without RockApp, MySMS and some very awesome themes!!
