How to Enable MMS (picture messaging) on Your iPhone (AT&T) [UPDATED x2]

UPDATE: The original carrier file v5.0 I had was not allowing Visual Voicemail for some people. I have updated the link below to a v5.0 that allows you to edit your settings and allows both Visual Voicemail & MMS to work. See the guide below for updates. (I’ve added steps 9 & 10.)

If you want to revert back to the carrier file 4.0 (no MMS) you may download here.

MessagesOk, I’m super excited that I got this to work. I really think it has to with AT&T allowing it to work by removing the opt-out codes (the code AT&T put in to block MMS when firmware 3.0 came out). That’s why I think it took a few days for mine to work after doing what I’m about to show you. It’s really really easy. I’m running an iPhone 3GS, jailbroken, not unlocked, on firmware 3.0.1. Your iPhone does not need to be jailbroken for this to work and I have linked to the file needed for firmware 3.1. Here’s how I did it:

PC/Windows Instructions

1. Download this carrier update file (v5.0) if you are running iPhone firmware 3.0 or 3.0.1 (it might work with lower firmware but I haven’t confirmed it.) If you are on the new 3.1, download here (v5.1).
2. Close iTunes.
3. Click Start > Run > type:cmd then press enter. Run this command: “C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunes.exe” /setPrefInt carrier-testing 1
cmd
dos
4. Open iTunes.
5. Hold the shift key while clicking update under your iPhone in iTunes.
6. Change the file type to “iPhone Carrier Configuration files” by clicking in the the bottom right corner and switching to *.ipcc.
filetype
7. Find the file of the carrier update you just saved to your computer in step 1, select it and click open.
updating
8. You iPhone is now updated. You may have MMS right away if AT&T has removed your opt-out code but mine took a few days.
9. To allow for Visual Voicemail to work on firmware 3.0 & 3.0.1 using carrier file v5.0, go to your Settings app > General > Network > Cellular Data Network > and under Visual Voicemail change wap.cingular to acds.voicemail
IMG_0378
10. Double check your MMS settings below the Visual Voicemail settings above to match this (do not enter anything in blank fields):
APN: wap.cingular
Username:
Password:
MMSC: mmsc.cingular.com
MMS Proxy: 066.209.011.32
MMS Max Message Size: 614400
MMS UA Prof URL:

NOTE: If you are on EDGE it will take a while for the image to send. If AT&T hasn’t removed the opt-out code on your account yet, you will get a red exclamation point next to the message.

2. Close iTunes.
3. Open the Terminal Application and run this command: defaults write com.apple.iTunes carrier-testing -bool TRUE

4. Open iTunes
5. Hold the alt key while clicking update under your iPhone in iTunes.
6. Find your file of the carrier update you downloaded and select it.
7. Wait for the update. Once it’s done, turn off your iPhone and turn it back on.
8. You iPhone is now updated. You may have MMS right away if AT&T has removed your opt-out code but mine took a few days.

  1. when i download the carrier update file (v5.0) it downloads to my computer but it appers weird, i cant click on it, or move it, and it wont appear when i update my iphone
and i cant change the file type to “iPhone Carrier Configuration files” that switches to ipcc

    i have a pc (windows)
    plz help???

    • Follow the 3rd step from the instruction above….The file downloaded are not meant to be view but would appear on the option when you the update. Remember to hold shift while you click on the update option in iTunes.

    • Make sure you successfully ran the CMD prompt instructions in steps 3. If you’re running Vista, see my previous post just above on how to do the CMD prompts differently than this site tells you.

  2. Hi,
Thanks for the easy to follow step by step instruction. Worked great!

  3. ok this worked great on my iphone thank you for the help. Now my question is does anyone know how to get mms on an unlocked iphone with tmobile

  4. ok i dont understand whats going on. i dl the attus.ipcc succesfully on my vista pc and ran the cmd prompts over and over and over just fine with itunes closed but when i go to shift update and i select the file my phone wont update it gives me an error and says exactly this “The iPhone “Perry’s iPhone” could not be updated. An unknown error occured (0xE800003D)” PLEASE HELP also i have a JAILBROKEN 3GS running 3.0…i really dont want to upgrade to 3.0

    • I have had the same exact issues… It is driving me crazy!!!!! :)

    • I am having the same problems with my 3GS. I was told about some programs from big boss were causing problems but I don’t have any installed from big boss.

    • I don’t want to loose my jailbreak. I’m not worried about loosing the carrier break. My phone is unlocked from AT&T already so I don’t need that and I’m also with AT&T anyway.

    • zachary Minot says

Are you running the Big Boss ATT logo on Cydia? I was having the same problem and someone mentioned deleting that in an above comment. After 2 days of trying to figure it out, I finally have mms on a 3.0 3gs.

  5. How do you have the pink and blue Windowd for your mms screen here in this page showing instructions?

  6. Anyone get tethering to work? (I used to use benm.at mobielconfig file for tethering before MMS)

It appears when I initially update the carrier file but once I input the settings for visual voicemail (acds.voicemail), turn tethering ON (USB only), and plug it into my MBP with OS X 10.6——> tethering DISAPPEARS.

So has anyone been able to use MMS, visual voicemail, and tethering together?

  7. Thanks!

Confirmed working on jailbroken 3gs 3.0.1 done on itunes 8.2 under vista64

Tested voicemail and MMS and both work great.

Just a FYI, I received a text this morning from AT&T saying my account was now MMS enabled with instructions on how to enable it by updating in Itunes. Maybe people who are having trouble need to wait until AT&T texts them that MMS is enabled for their account before it will function properly.

  8. When i go to shift update and i select the file my phone wont update it gives me an error and says exactly this “The iPhone “Terry’s iPhone” could not be updated. An unknown error occured (0xE800003D)”

I have rebooted my PC, my iPhone 3GS, unplugged and replugged my USB cable and removed: 74.208.105.171 gs.apple.com from the hosts file.

I have an iPhone 3GS with 3.0.1 and iTunes of 9.0.1.8 any ideas what to try?

    • I have been having this same problem all evening. Also driving me nuts. Finally got it working. It was a permissions problem. I have itunes 9.01 and a jailbroken 3gs at 3.01. I’m not sure what non jailbroken owners can do to fix this – since I had to use SSH to change th permissions.

SSH into your iphone (if you are jailbroken, you can get all of the instructions on this at Cydia). Once in, you need to navigate to your Carrier Bundles folder, as follows: /private/var/mobile/Library/Carrier Bundles/. Once there, you need to change the permissions box to read 0777 (it will likely read 0755 when you first log in). Once you do this, repeat the steps 5,6, and 7 – and it should now load the carrier file without the error.

Hope this helps. Finally worked for me. Perhaps someone else can chime in and with information on how non jailbroken folks can change the permissions on this folder. Bob

    • Thanks! I did what you said and did NOT work but I went back and saw that the files in the ATT_US.bundle folder all had x0755 permissions so I checked the box to “Set group, owner, and permissions recursively” and then did steps 5,6, and 7 again and it worked. (added a bunch of files!) Thanks again for the help!!

  9. Hi, I follow the steps with no problem, but when I create a TXT message it dosent have the camera button to sent picture.

    Any Ideas?

    Version 3.0.1 (7A400)
    Carrier AT&T 5.0

  10. Wow! I finally have mms!! For people having trouble like me delete the AT&T carrier logo that you downloaded off cydia by big boss..that did it for me and now I’m sending mms like crazy!! The only downside is that most of the mms I send fail if I don’t have great service damn edge!!!

  11. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!! This is the one feature I’ve been so pissed about losing since switching to my iPhone 3G S but now I’m 100% happy with it and I still have my jailbreak!

  12. I followed this because my 3G is jailbroken and I wanted MMS, since that was the only thing left to have. This worked great, but remember to restart your phone. Then goto the settings\messaging and make sure the new MMS toggle is on.As soon as I restarted my phone, I had the new toggle, which was turned on by default. Thanks for all the help! A barebones I-phone sucks, nothing like being jailbroken!!

  13. Does anyone know if this works for 3g running 3.0? I dl’d thecarrier update file and tried looking for the ipcc file but could not find it when I used the drop down menu only the ipsw file is shown?

  14. Thanks Douglas! Worked like a charm once I rebooted my phone. 3gs 3.0.1 on Windows.

  15. I have windows vista 64…i’m just wondering if I am missing a step here I DL the first file carrier update v5.0..I am jailbroken on a 3g with I think I have 3.0 or it may be 3.01.. updated Itunes ..I will try again tonight .But want to make sure if all the steps are in the instructions or is their another part in the replys?

  16. Ok so I got MMS to work I have a 3g 3.0 8g i HAVE WINDOWS VISTA 64 I ran cmd as an admin I think you have to type in the cmd not copy and paste “C:\Program Files (x86)\iTunes\iTunes.exe”/setPrefInt carrier-testing 1 it has to be typed with the quotaition and the spaces included after i pressed enter i followed the rest of the steps and voila works like a charm… actually the (x86) part for VISTA 64 users wasnt found until I read the comments and another MMS hack site hope this helps 3G 3.0 users

  17. when i hold shift and then i click update
the carrier update file doesnt appear
    plz help??????????
and im sure im doing the other steps right

    • 6. Change the file type to “iPhone Carrier Configuration files” by clicking in the the bottom right corner and switching to *.ipcc.

if you don’t do this, it doesn’t show.

  18. Ok, I got the MMS to work on my phone after several tries. First couple of tries seem to have gone smoothly, no errors popped out or anything. But after rebooting and checking the Message icon, I saw no camera. So I checked Network> Phone Data Settings and nothing was there. At this point I was little frustated, so I opened Cydia and deleted my theme boards etc. I rebooted than tried again however it still wasnt working. So i tried using another ipcc file thinking maybe that where the problem was(at the end i dont think it was). So I tried again, no errors are coming up, everrything updates properly but still no camera icon on my Message app. So I finally decide to check the small details which were Settings>Messages>Turn on MMS lol.

So after all that, it seems like Visual Voicemail, Tethering, and MMS work. The only problem though is that my Phone Data Settings doesn’t show up more. >?<

Anyhow, I hope my troubleshootingh helps.

  19. hi i am trying the C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunes.exe” /setPrefInt carrier-testing 1
thing and i get ” The filename, directory name, or valume label syntax is incorrect.” i do change “C” to a “D” cuz thats what my windows is running on.

  20. I am not sure about switching the C to a D wouldnt hurt to try… I typed in the command exactly how the author had it …altho since i was on 64 vista I had to use (x86) after Files hope this helps …I also used spaces where indicated..it took a few times but it eventually did work

  21. I followed the steps on Windows, but i cant change the file type when i open itunes, it only shows *.ipsw

  22. The same thing happens to me. Itunes wont recognize the carrier file. Its greyed out in iTunes and I cant open it. I have given up on trying and will just wait for Jailbreak 3.1 with MMS.

  23. So does anybody know if this will method will work for a 2G iPhone running 3.1? I had didn’t read enough into it and tried the ActivateMMS2G on it and Borked it and now i’m finally back and running and I don’t want to make the same mistake twice. I’m using Tmobile as well.

  25. Ok I cannot get past the command prompt! Step one has me dead in the water. Two different computers and I can’t get either to work. I’ve tried all sorts of variation to no avail. One computer is running XP, the other Vista 32bit.

  26. I have the iphone 3g but i got it unlocked and have been using free Wifi instead of paying for the data plan. They havent charged me. After doing this codeto get the MMS messaging I now have internet and im not in an area with WIFI, does this mean apple knows i updated my iphone? Ahh

  27. Do you have to jailbreak your iphone to do this?
and will the process give your computer a virus?

  28. Now that 3.1.3 update is out does this work on the 1st Gen iphone? I have the first generation 4gb and its TOO expensive to upgrade to another one.

So Does this work on the 1st generation iPhone?

IF NOT what application can i use to get picture mail?
