The Dev-Team has updated their blog with a little snippet about the blackra1n jailbreak. Below is what they have to say. You can see the original article HERE.
Update: geohot released a Windows jailbreak called “blackra1n” which is similar to redsn0w in that it covers multiple devices (and it covers beyond just firmware 3.0.1 where redsn0w currently stops). blackra1n is not a carrier unlock. You must always avoid updating your baseband to maintain your unlockability. If you use blackra1n to jailbreak 3.1 or 3.1.2, the steps you take before running blackra1n will prevent the unlock from working on your iPhone for potentially a very long time. By the way, we haven’t yet tested whether a blackra1n’d device can accept a custom IPSW without tweaks, but if it doesn’t then it should only require a minor change.

I have a 3gs which was unlocked on 3.0 fm, I updated to 3.1.2 last night using I tunes then jailbroke using blackra1n. I backed up all cydia apps using apt backup, all in all it took 30 mins & works fine. I tried two different sims in it this morning & it still appears to be unlocked, can’t understand it but it works!
Really?! Have u tried any other Sim cards besides ATT? Ur baseband should have been updated when u went to 3.1.2. To be honest, your story sounds too good to be true.
Blackra1n works perfecly on my ipod touch 2G with 3.1.2 thanks geo!!!
I used blackra1n to jailbreak , but it didn’t work . only could use the phone. Can someone tell me what went wrong?
Blackrain works on 3gs. All props to Geo. Dev Team you still have my respect. Everyone should stop talkin. Dev Team rocks.
i should have just waited for the dev team to release their jailbreak software. blackra1n for some reason doesnt enable afc2 so i cant access the root folder via usb. i would ssh but the wi-fi on my 3G stopped working out of nowhere a couple months ago.
there’s a fix for that in cydia called afc2add under the modmyi source.

dude its everywhere just read. you can’t obviously do this sucessfully if you don’t take time to read. the iphone is a simple device if you follow the rules. every little thing that you can possibly think of has been tried or someone is working on. the key to owning and sucessfully jailbreaking and unlocking this device is posted already. if you can’t find it don’t try it. you’ll end up with a nokia 6190 when all is done. best place to start is here: http://www.iclarified.com

It’s great that GeoHot came out with this and all, but can anyone explain the benefits of having 3.1.2 jailbroken versus 3.0.1 jailbroken, unlocked, fully customized, and with everything working just fine?
I assume that most of the posts here and on other sites about running into difficulties with blackra1n are from people doing things incorrectly (even though it’s one of the most straightforward processes you can do with a computer). I did it to my iPhone 2G and it worked fine, but I’m just not too eager to risk future jailbreaks and unlocks with my 3GS.
blackra1n worked just fine and was quick. The only problem was when i tried to ssh back in to change some files and it would not let me. Had to change some plist files. Had to use a different program cause iphone tunnel suite wouldnt work on it, but everything is working fine on my 3gs, 3.1.2 on AT&T.

I have already tried (“redsn0w 0.8”) after I tried to downgrade to firmware version 3.0.1 still NO luck?
my jailbroke 3GS is locked up on the logo screen. I have reset it many times but it wont go any farther than the logo.
