TomTom Car Kit Finally Available – Sort Of

##ICON_NAME## Ok, we have been doing this TomTom Car Kit thing for almost two months now, but it seems that they might finally be getting down to business… sort of. The TomTom Car Kit is now displayed on both the Apple Store and TomTom’s website however, there are a few catches.

First, the price now seems to be $119.95 instead of the announced price of $99.99. Second, the Apple Store says that the product is, “Currently Unavailable” and TomTom’s website says that it is, “Currently not available through TomTom.com.” So, although it seems to be “ready”, they obviously are not shipping yet.

Basically, they have already delayed the Kit once so instead of delaying it again (missing their October deadline) and looking really bad, they have put the item up so it looks available when really… it’s not.

Your $119.95 will get you the Car Kit, a USB Car Charger, an Adhesive Disk and the Instruction Manual. Remember, the Car Kit does not include the TomTom iPhone application. The kit (and the TomTom application) are compatible with both the iPhone 3G and 3GS.

TomTom has added some additional information to their website about the Car Kit.

  1. What happened to this having a GPS chip in it, and hence being usable with the iPod touch too?

  2. When are the Chinese going to release their version same look with FM sync?

Still too expensive. First, $100 then we crank $20 more just to be on the safe side, yeah that should do it. I’m going to sit this one out and wait till it hits $75… Hopefully.

  4. I’m from the UK and I have one. It was £100.00. It does improve the GPS positioning. Sometimes my built in GPS couldn’t even work out which way I was going nevermind where I actually was. With the TomTom car kit it’s 100% accurate 100% of the time.

Bit pricey for what it actually does. Built in microphone should be louder in my opinion. On loud road surfaces I couldn’t use the hands free capabilities becaus I simply couldn’t hear the other person speaking. – and I did have the volume levels on full.

  5. it now says on tom toms website that it is $100 and you can now buy it!!!!!!!!!!!

  6. Cory Gillmore says

That’s just ridiculous. I feel that they should sell the gps unit for $100 or $120 or whatever but that it should come with a promo code to download the app for free. $200+ is just unacceptable. I don’t need this crap anyway as I have a pioneer in dash gps unit. But that didn’t stop me from downloading a pirated version of tomtom just to stick it to em.
