Verizon Preparing Network for 2010 iPhone

VerizonVerizon Wireless Chief Technology Officer, Anthony Melone, was recently interviewed by businessweek.com about the future of the iPhone coming to Verizon. Melone is quoted saying, “”We have put things in place already,” and “We are prepared to support that traffic.” If you read the entire article you’ll catch that Verizon isn’t expecting the iPhone for sure, they’re just stating they are prepared if Apple decides to use other carriers than AT&T. There have been many rumors over the years that Verizon would get the iPhone but we’ll have to wait until about the 3rd quarter before we know for sure.

  1. Sounds to me that if it did happen then it would support a sim(gsm) just as the storm supports it…

But Verizon is the 2nd biggest if not the biggest cellular phone company,of course they would have the power to support such traffic,i really doubt that if they would ask t-mobile or boost mobile the same question they would have declined.

Either way, maybe a slightly different model would be available to both AT&T and Verizon.

  2. For Verizon to get the iPhone, it would have to convert to GSM. I’ve read nothing about Apple developing a CDMA iPhone. In Canada, the two major. national CDMA carriers switched to GSM in November. They both got the iPhone on day one. Now Canada has four national carriers with the iPhone.

There have been muffled rumours that Verizon will go GSM, finally.

    • For what it’s worth, Verizon has stated that it is embarking on a network upgrade. This is the same language that was used by Bell Mobility and Telus in Canada when they moved to GSM. No mention of GSM was ever made, nor has it been made. All they talk about is a network upgrade. They paid a half billion dollars each to “upgrade”. What they now have is GSM, the world standard. They still activate CDMA phones, but their growth targets are tied to GSM. So I wouldn’t be surprised to see Verizon introduce GSM along with the unveiling of their network upgrade.

  3. The other rumor is that a new chip is out that will do both CDMA and GSM. The rumor also has apple buying these chips, so if true, Verizon will have the IPhone in 2010.

  4. At this point if Verizon got the iPhone it would not really matter i’d just be happy about the fact that AT&T’s Data would not be swamped so must anymore and maybe they could get there act together again. No more dropped calls.
