Apple Removes Flash Content From iPad Ads

AppleI noticed that when Steve Jobs was doing his demo of the new iPad, he quickly skipped over areas of webpages that had flash on them. There was, just like the iPhone, a little blue cube where the flash belongs. This has disappointed everyone that the new device won’t support flash. Most likely, Apple doesn’t allows flash on it’s iPhone, iPod touch and new iPad because it doesn’t want users bypassing the paid for App Store for free flash game sites.

Anyway, Apple was displaying their iPad on their website with the flash working. Not sure how they missed this one but they have now updated the images. This would mean they do not intend to have flash working on the device any time soon.

What I Backup When Restoring My iPhone

Apple iPhone SchoolBefore the recent event from Apple I was waiting for the announcement of new iPhone OS so I could upgrade and get all the new features. Unfortunately, there was no update as of yet. So, I decided to rejailbreak my iPhone. I’ve been missing push notifications from my last jailbreak and wanted to go a different route. Before I restore my iPhone I sync my iPhone and then use SSH to backup all kinds of stuff. Here’s the process I use. Some are redundant because the iTunes sync backs them up but many times I’ve had a bad backup or want to start fresh and if you don’t back up everything, you will lose it. If you can think of anything else, please add it in the comments and I’ll add it to the list.

1. Sync with iTunes. This will save all of your App Store & stock app information like notes, game saves, logins, etc. Again, if you are not going to restore from this backup then you don’t need to do this.
2. Remove all pictures and videos using the USB connections. If something has happened where you can’t access your iPhone via USB to see pictures, like me right now. You can go to /private/var/mobile/Media/DCIM/ and manually download them via SSH. Beware, if you have a lot of pictures and videos, it may take a while.
3. Take a screenshot of every page of your springboard. I also take them of Winterboard and my Settings app where the jailbroken apps list is.
4. Open Cydia and write down or take screenshots of everything under manage>packages that you’ve installed. [Read more…]

How to Get More Than 11 Pages of Apps (No Jailbreak)

Apple iPhone SchoolA while back a friend of mine text me these instructions on how to get more than 11 pages of apps on my iPhone. I now have 13 thanks to the hack so here’s the guide. From what I see, there is no jailbreak required to do this.

1. Create 11 pages of apps by dragging apps to all pages. There can be blank spots.
2. Fill the first page & last page full of apps.
3. Drag the Voice Memos app to the very last page and last location in the bottom right. (Not on the dock)
4. Move one app up from the dock so the Voice Memos app gets bumped off. Hit the home button so they stop wiggling.
5. Hold down power button and turn off. Turn back on.

That’s it! When iPhone boots up it should create a new page. It seems the best amount is 19 pages. That way you can still see all the dots :) I’ve also heard that it doesn’t work on older firmware. I’m using 3.1.2.

Update: I’ve updated the instructions for #2. I added that you need the first page to be full of apps also.

Apple Tablet Live Blog

Apple iPhone SchoolToday I will be live blogging during the Apple event. I’m going to do it a little different from the past. I’m not going to attempt to write every little thing that happens on this one post. I will be taking notes from the event and then, later, writing full articles about each point. What we’ll be doing during the events is tweeting and live streaming both major iPhone and Tablet announcements and sharing our comments. There will be a live video feed from me and an area where you can either live chat (type), comment in the post, or reply via twitter.

We will also be tweeting as much info as possible from our @iphoneschool twitter account for those of you on mobile devices.

ProSwitcher Update

Available In: Cydia       Price: Free

CydiaIt seems as soon as I wrote about ProSwitcher, the next day an update was released. Here are some of the features of the new release. Show Icon toggle (allows for activation from springboard icon); Empty Tap to Close toggle; Show Default Apps toggle (hide apps like phone and mail); Empty Style options of Text, Blank or Disabled.

It also feels a little snappier but I have some many hack running I’m never sure what’s causing slow downs. Let me know if those of you having lag issues see improvement.

ProSwitcher – Palm Pre-styled Application Switcher

Available In: Cydia       Price: Free

cydiaBackgrounder is a really great hack for the iPhone. It lets you keep an application running in the background even when you hit the home button to close it. This is great for apps like Pandora and other music apps or anything else you might want. The annoying part for me has always been moving around between those apps. Usually I just use the search to find them because I have so many pages of apps I don’t want to scroll around looking for them. One newer feature of backgrounder displays a badge on the icon of the apps running in the background so you know what’s still running. Now with all of that said, a new app helps streamline all of this called ProSwitcher.

This app has a ton of customization that I could talk about all day but I’ll tell you the main point and you can mess with settings. Basically what it does is when you activate it from one of it’s many ways, it zooms out of the app, kinda like the way multiple webpages display in Mobile Safari, and you can flick left and right through what’s running. It also triggers the app you’re currently in to run in the back ground. Here’s some screenshots and a quick video demo. The apps free so check it out and if there’s something you don’t like, make sure you check all the features and options ’cause a lot of it can be changed.

Loren Brichter Explains How He Created Tweetie

##ICON_NAME##I used to be a HUGE fan of Tweetie until Tweetie 2. Some of my favorite features were removed like the dark theme and I don’t really like the new retweet feature and the quote feature only lets you use “via” instead of “RT”. Anyway, this is a really kewl video from the developer speaking at Standford University back in May of 2009. It’s a kewl inside view to app developing and more support for why some apps should be paid and not free. Oh, and be prepared, it’s 30 minutes long.

Redo – Task List You Can Reset

Available In: App Store       Price: $1.99 or Free (Lite Version)

RedoI had been looking for a long time, when I found this app, for a task list app I could use for repeating tasks. This way I don’t have to write my list over again or uncheck every task. Once you check off everything, you tap the refresh button in the bottom left and it resets the list. You can also make more than one list. You can drag around lists to reorder them and individual items within the lists. This is a big feature for me too because if a task suddenly becomes high priority I can drag it to the top.

The icon for the app supports badges and the number represents how many tasks are left in the currently opened list as default. You can make it show only lists you favorite or all lists or none.

Overall, I like this app because of it’s simplicity. It just works. This applications is on my first page of my iPhone.
