App

This mod changes the colors of your text bubbles. There are three separate installations available for three different color combinations. They are Blue and Lavender, Pink and Lavender & Turquoise and Lavender. It would be great if there were a few more color combinations. They seem to only work on the iPhone 4 with it’s retina display which makes total sense since the name of the mod is SMS Retina Bubbles. We tried it on an iPhone 3GS and it didn’t work.

I found this really nice fall wallpaper online with a nice variety of colored leaves. Looks great on both the iPhone and iPad. I had to rotate it for the iPhone. I’ve included both versions for download below. Just tap the one you want below to open the full resolution. Then hold your finger on the image until a pop up comes up allowing you to save the image. You can then set your wallpaper from either the Settings app or from the Photos app.

If you’re looking for a professional, solid way to hang your iPad on the wall, Wallee is a great solution. The list could go on and on for reasons you’d hang your iPad on the wall but this accessory is definitely going to get the job done. It comes with a hard, durable case that locks into a wall mounted “X” that could be installed almost anywhere. The case comes in 5 different colors and the wall mount in 2. You can also buy extra wall mounts for different mounting locations. Wallee’s price is comparable to many iPad cases, $49 for a kit and $10 for additional wall mounts. Read more
CallMe – Add a One Touch Dial or Text Icon for Contacts to Home Screen
| Available In: Cydia | Price: Free |
This app reminds me of the app called SpringDial where you could add an icon for any contact to your home screen to quickly dial them. That app is no longer in Cydia so here’s another option and it has even more features.
Once CallMe is installed, just open the app and pick a contact you want to reach straight from your home screen by tapping the plus sign in the top right. Once you select who you want to contact, pick the number you want to reach them at. Next pick if you want to call them or text them and pick what text you want to show under the icon. Close the app and your iPhone will respring. You’re all set! Read more
Upgrade to 4.2 on Any Device Early & Jailbreak
Apple has released the new version of firmware for all devices (besides first generations of course), version 4.2, to developers. The final, gold master file is ready. This means it will install even if you’re not a developer. This is the firmware that brings folders and backgrounding to the iPad and printing to all devices! The firmware will probably be out officially from Apple via iTunes within a week or so but if you want it early, follow the directions below. If you want to jailbreak, see the instructions following the update instructions.
As of the writing of this article, Cydia isn’t ready for 4.2 and I’m also not sure that this will work on the iPad for sure. Please correct me on this. The dev team blog says to point redsn0w at firmware 4.1. The iPhone runs 4.1 but not the iPad. You may be able to point it a previous iPad firmware but I haven’t tested this yet. I’m honestly waiting to jailbreak myself once Cydia is ready. We will update this article once we can confirm. I recommend syncing your device before starting this. Read more

For a limited time, Ragdoll Blaster 2 is free for the iPhone and iPod touch. The developers are trying to promote the new version of the app for the iPad ($4.99). This game is really addicting and has 4 1/2 stars in the App Store. It comes with over 150 levels and there is some great creativity in the designing of some of these levels. I definitely recommend downloading this game. Read more

There are two really good applications for keeping track of today’s elections in the United States. The first one is the CNN Elections Center app. It can detect your current location and find the races in your area. Then you can pick them or up to 15 total to follow throughout the day. The app includes House, Senate and Governor races and also includes some state Ballot Measures such as voting on the right to hunt. Of course it also has a news section to keep up on breaking election news. Read more

guyPhone 4 – Working iPhone 4 Costume Made From 40″ LED Screen
Ok, if I was at a costume party tonight, this is totally what I would wear. Of course I wasn’t at a costume party. I was recording episode 24 of our video podcast, i101! Anyway, this thing is totally awesome. An iPhone is hacked to use it’s display out to a 40″ flat screen (that is not actually touch) running on a 2 hour battery that you can wear! There’s a sweet little video, lots of pics and the full details below. Oh, and the flash on the back lights up, I’m so jealous.

Press Release
TAMPA, FLA., John Savio (Center), Abigail Gardner (Featured as Apple Employee) This year they’re back at it again. John Savio and Reko Rivera went their separate ways. John created the upgraded rendition of the iPhone 4 featured here at 10x to scale, complete with a 40″ LED LCD Panel, a Jailbroken iPhone 4, VGA out from the iPohone, LED Back Camera Light, weighs roughly 75 lbs and uses a mini 12v Battery with 2+ hours of battery life. The costume took a total of 3 days / 40 hours to complete.
BACKSTORY — This all started three years ago Reko Rivera and Bobby Hartman created a wearable large iPhone costume with a real 37″ lcd tv. An iPod was attached with a looping video of a real iphones screen in normal use. Last year with the help of John Savio and John Matthews the team created yet another amazing rendition of the new iPhone 3GS. Savio loved the original idea but wanted to take it to the next level and make it thinner and actually work with user input! With some heavy researching and some solid determination Savio finally found a solution. He managed to modify the software on the iPhone to allow a live dual image output to the large 42″ lcd tv while maintaining the image in landscape mode. Reko originally came up with the idea and really pushed to see his vision come to life two years ago. This year John Savio and Reko Rivera embarked on different projects. John stuck with his love of apple products and Reko ventured off to explore his love of DJ’ing with a mobile DJ setup.

When Apple came out with iOS 4, one of the big features was multitasking. Part of multitasking is double pressing the home button to get to an app switching dock. It’s kind of like command+tab on the mac to switch between apps. Well when you pull up this app switching dock, you can swipe to the left to get a nice little menu that has features like locking the rotation of the screen, quick access to music controls and the icon to the most recent app that’s playing audio in the background like the iPod or Pandora. PBS Releases iPad App
PBS released their new iPad app allowing you to watch many of their programing right on the iPad. I tested it out last night and got distracted watching an episode on the wildlife of Cuba. There are both full length episodes and shorter videos. The one I watched was about an hour long. The video was great quality and buffered very well. According to their App Store description at the time of writing this article, they upgraded server capacity just a day after releasing the app. If you installed this app the day it was released and were having troubles, give it another try. FaceMan Update

I talked about this app in episode 20 of i101 but the recent update was significant enough to write about it again. If you don’t remember, this app does what Photo Booth for the Mac does. It uses the front facing camera and adds silly effects. The update now allows you to use the rear camera too. It also added 4 new effects including AsciiArt (drawing the image with just letters, numbers and other ASCII characters), ModernArt, 100Me and NightVision. Check out the screenshots below for examples. There are a lot more features that were added so here’s the complete list: Read more
