This app is for all of you who need to be a walking wikipedia… which I doubt is all that many. Basically, when all goes according to plan (read on), this app gives you access to the entire wikipedia database when offline. Yep, it puts the whole thing on your iPhone! Sounds crazy right, it is! But do not get excited yet, I have not yet been successful in getting it on my iPhone…

So first off I downloaded the app from the Wiki2Touch Repo in Installer. Then launch the app and it tells me that I need to install the data base, which they have a nice instruction page for. I clicked the link (on my main pc) to start the wiki database download… woah! almost 4gb big! That took a little over an hour to download, on my cable internet. Then once it finished, my WinRAR popped up (WinRAR = WinZIP) and asked me if I wanted to extract the files, which I clicked yes… whoops. 2 hours later when it finished extracting, I realized I wasn’t suppose to do that. (I am a guy, I tend to avoid instructions…) Once I re-read the instructions I realized they have a tool for your PC that takes the file you downloaded and ‘indexes’ it for you. So I started up that tool and away it went… untill 2 hours later (yeah it was still running after 2 hours) it crashed my computer. :-\ I have a decent computer, I was running a few other apps at the time, but nothing to stress the computer, but everything froze and I had to start the process over. So I gave up. Besides, if you want this app on your iPhone and working, that means you have to give up 4 gigs of memory that could be used for songs/movies… And I don’t think the wikipedia will get me through long days at work, like listening to music does.

Since I do not need to be a walking Wikipedia, I decided I wasn’t going to waste another 2-3 hours of my life on this app. If you have got it working, please comment!

BossPrefs brings like all the iPhone 3rd party preference apps bundled into 1. It allows you to start/stop running processes (like SSH and EDGE, and even allows you to add running processes not included already!). You can edit dock icons, fix directory permissions, disable the Screenshot ability, change the double tap option of the home button, and view disk space. You can show/hide icons like edge, bluetooth, wifi, SSH, mail and even the Dock. It pretty much does it all! Authors notes and screenshots after the break! BossPrefs is available through the BigBoss source.
Authors Notes:

This native iPhone app is an offshoot of “Services” by Chris Hoffman. The app expands on services by adding some more options and focusing on being a complete preferences replacement. After installing BossPrefs? you should be able to remove Customize, SMBPrefs, and Settings icons from your desktop. With the new dock, you can add any icon you want to the dock. Also, bossprefs has a plugable interface so you can create a plugin for any app you want to toggle yourself.

Changes 1.62

Fixed issue with cooperability with Categories. On 1.61 if you ran “fix permissions on userdir” your categories apps no longer could hide icons. The problem is solved on 1.62 but the damage is not undone. You will need to empty and recreate your categories to fix (sorry).

Upped limit of dock icons from 20 to 80 (you guys know the dock scrolls, right?).

Price: FREE! Snapture is 100%, absolutely FREE. We love making great software and we hope that you’ll support us through donations. Please help us fund future projects. We’ve got some great ideas to taking iPhone photography to the next level, but we really need your help.

Easy Self Photo: One of the most annoying aspects of the iPhone’s Camera app is the fact that you have to tap a tiny button in order to snap a photo. This makes it extremely difficult to try and take a photo of yourself. With Snapture, taking ‘Self’ photos is easy! Simply tap anywhere on the iPhone screen or use the volume button to take a photo.

Digital Zoom: With Snapture, you don’t have to worry about stepping forward or backwards to get the perfect shot. Our 3x max digital zoom slider helps you frame exactly what you want in your shots.

Burst Mode: Taking photos with a camera phone is inherently difficult because you really need a steady hand. With Snapture’s fast and slow burst modes, you can capture three frames in a row to make sure you get that perfect shot.

Multiple Image Sizes: Snapture lets you take photos in three different sizes: Large (1600×1200), Medium (1280×960) and Small (960×720).

Color Modes: With Snapture you can take photos in either Full Color or Grayscale color modes.

Timer: Turn-on the timer to delay photo taking by 5 seconds. Just enough time to join in on group shots.

Toggle Auto Rotation: The basic iPhone Camera app will not let you take a photo upside down. Photos are rotated automatically even if you’re an advanced user trying to take a creative shot. With Snapture you can turn Auto Rotation off should you desire.

Silent Mode: Take photos without disturbing anyone by turning off audible feedback.

Use Leveler: The use leveler provides a visual aid for taking photos at different angles.

iCube is, you guessed it! Rubiks Cube on your iPhone! If you have ever messed around with a cube then you know how this works, swipe your finger on a cube in the direction you want it to rotate, and whallah! it rotates! Use pinch un-ping gestures to zoom in and out, and shake your iPhone to scramble the cube. The only drawback right now is that you cannot rotate the actual view of the cube, which actually drives me crazy, and as a beginner makes this very hard for me to solve. And when I say beginner, I mean that I actually started learning how to cube about a week ago, crazy thing is I had no idea this app was in the works. Even with the drawback, i am still impressed with the app, as it is a great start to a 3D graphical application on the iPhone. Kudos Glen (the developer). Screenshots below! Wait, bah… seems I cannot take an actual screen of the cube! All I get is a gray screen. This app can be installed from the iSpazio source.

This nifty little app is brought to us by BigBoss, created by John Robinson, and can be found in the Utilities section of Installer.app. Basically when you run this app, you can access all the saved notes on your iPhone from any local computer, ie. the same network as the iPhone. The app tells you the ip address to type into your browser, once entered you will see a numbered list of all your saved notes. Click one to open it up and edit it. Press ’save’ and it will save it back onto your iPhone with all your changes. The app runs smooth and quick, at least it did for me. Brooke has mentioned that it did not work for her on 1.1.1 (she claims to be updating her iPhone soon!) Screen shots to follow!

Note: You have to leave the RemoteNote app open on your iPhone while you are editing it with your computer.

SpoofApp is the iPhone app for all you pranksters out there. I got my iPhone out at a recent family gathering and even my grandparents had a good laugh with this. SpoofApp allows you to call someone, and disguise your number with some one else’s, and even allows you to change your voice!

You can find the app in Installer under toys and is availible from BigBoss’ source. To actually use this you are required to purchase a phone card from one of the providers, SpoofCard or Phone Gangster, but there is a Free Sample Call, for the first time. Open the app up and tap settings on the top right, then select Free Sample from the provider list. Enter your phone number and area code, select the voice changer option you want, then tap Back. Tap the top number area and enter in the number you want to call, to select a contact, tap the contacts area (this option is very well implemented!) and select the contact’s number you want.

The second number entry area is for the number you want to apear on the persons phone you are calling, works best if you are calling a number that they would have saved on their phone, so when they receive the call they see that persons name show up and not just a number. Once both numbers are in place, tap call, if you get a popup about recording you can tap no, or go setup an account. Then the app will contact the provider with the info you entered, and the screen will tell you to answer the phone when they call you, tap answer when you receive the call and start listening. Once you answer it will start ringing the number you dialed. Once the person answers your call, you wont be able to tell that your voice is being masked, but it is! there is about a 3 second delay between the time you say something and the time they hear it.

SpoofCard is the only provider that offers recording and voice changing, they were also gracious enough to give us a few free cards to do this review! Thanks Spoofcard!

All in all a very fun app and very well designed. Kudos to the programmer! Screenshots below, and comment with how your prank calls went!
Another gaming console brought to the iPhone, and from the bit I’ve played so far, it runs very smooth! You will not notice much diffrence from NES.app in the game select screen, or the settings, its all the same basically. The landscape made does show the original Sega controller. Some ROMs require a bios to be installed, some don’t. Remember legally, you need to own the game to have the rights to use it on your iPhone, /endfairwarning. So far I’m hooked on NBA Jam, Mortal Combat, and Sonic and Knuckles. I hope to find Starfox and Blitz, and see how well they play on the iPhone! As always screenshots below.

CubeWorld is a very neat application, it allows you to look at all angles from the vantage point that the picture was taken. It has been labled as 3D, but I would disgree since you are looking at a 2D image. You can use your finger or the accelorometer to turn the angle of the camera in any direction, allowing a full 360 degree view up and down. (I still cant see the photographers feet, so there is some trickery!) Check out this application in Installer from MarcoGiorgini.com source. Once you have the source added to Installer, it will add the Category 3D, find the app there. This is a fun app to play around with, and I cant wait till more pitures get added. Screenshots to follow!

Another great app this week! smartRSS is an RSS reader and is far better than MobileRSS both aesthetically and functionally. You can get this app from Jeremie Engel’s source and find it under the category “smartRSS, iGuideTV…” (he really needs to name his source differently). Open up the app and you can find the ‘Apple Hot News’ feed already added, tap it to open it to an article list, tap the article to read it. To add more feeds tap Settings>New. You can also edit and delete feeds in this section, or tap the Options button at the bottom and change the number of items queued in a feed. Back at the home screen you can tap Refresh to get the new feeds, or tap About to see the app info or the developer’s contact info. The one thing that drives me crazy about these apps is typing in the feed address, Copy/Paste Apple! Make it happen! I tried to find the feed file through SSH and no luck, seems they are compiled files and is impossible to read/edit. Practice makes perfect they say, so typing is the way to go. Screenshots below, and give us your feedback! Enjoy!
