Today, Apple released firmware 3.0.1. The firmware was released in order to fix the SMS bug that leaves all iPhones vulnerable to attack. Like with all firmware upgrades, you will want to hold off on upgrading if you currently have a jailbroke iPhone or iPod Touch. The Dev-Team hasn’t released any info about a new jailbreak but, we will keep our eyes open for any info from them. Below is info from Apple about the new firmware. [Read more...]

Apple Posts Support Document Warning Against Jailbreaking
Apple recently posted a support document warning against the affects of jailbreaking an iPhone or iPod Touch. The document lists some affects of jailbreaking and that it is a “violation of the iPhone end-user license agreement and because of this, Apple may deny service for an iPhone or iPod touch that has installed any unauthorized software.” Check out the full document below. iPhone 3.1 beta 3 – New Features
Apple has released firmware 3.1 beta 3 to developers. The firmware has been found to have a few cool new features (see list below).
Note: If you are a developer, you will need to update to 3.1 beta 3 before July 29th because 3.1 beta 2 expires at midnight on the 28th.
• Copy and paste videos – You can now copy and paste videos in your e-mails. There is a 15 MB limit for copying/pasting videos or images. This limit is most likely there to save bandwidth usage (see demo video below).
• Tethering counter – If you go to Settings -> Genral -> Usage on your iPhone, you’ll notice Tethering data which shows how much tethering you’ve used. Note: Tethering is not available to AT&T users yet.
• Springboard icons – When you hold down the Springboard icons they no longer vibrate.
• Baseband updated – The baseband has been updated to 05.11.04.
• Camera API additions

Apple Releases WiFi Support Document
Today, Apple released a document to help iPhone and iPod Touch owners who are having Wi-Fi issues. Below are the Symptoms and some Fixes. You can see the original document on Apple’s website HERE.
Syptoms
• iPhone or iPod touch appear to be connected to a Wi-Fi network but cannot use Wi-Fi for checking email, surfing the Internet, or other data transactions.
• On the device, when you tap Settings > Wi-Fi and then tap next to the network, no values or entries for IP Address, Subnet Mask, Router, or DNS appear.
• The device shows no Wi-Fi address (Tap Settings > General > About and scroll down to Wi-Fi Address).
This can happen if, during the initial setup of the iPhone or iPod touch, no Wi-Fi address was registered. So while the device can attach to different Wi-Fi networks, it will not be able to retrieve an IP address because the Wi-Fi router doesn’t see a Wi-Fi address from the device.
Firmware 3.1 Beta Brings New Features But Breaks Unlock *UPDATED*

Apple has seeded firmware 3.1 to developers and there is already info coming out on the new features. Of course, they have updated the baseband so if you want to unlock, don’t upgrade. Also, If you want to jailbreak, don’t upgrade. There is speculation that if you upgrade, you may never be able to jailbreak again. Here’s info from the Dev Team and then a list of new features.
You’ve seen us give this warning before, and there are only so many ways to say it or come up with a clever title :) But here it is: ultrasn0w users must stay away from any firmware updates past 3.0 (including today’s 3.1 beta) until we release the tools that let you update the firmware without updating the baseband. For most phones out there, baseband updates are irreversible and you’ll lose ultrasn0w.
The 3.0 jailbreak was one of those (rare) times where both the jailbreak and the unlock coincided (the only other time was 2.2). It’s important that people realize that *most* firmware releases aren’t like that, and you need to take steps (via the tools) to separate the firmware update from its included baseband update.
This warning does not apply to the iPhone 2G, which uses BootNeuter for the unlock, not ultrasn0w.
New iPhone 3GS Commercials
We knew it was only a matter of time before Apple released some iPhone 3GS commercials. Below are two new commercials. The first commercial shows off the new Copy and Paste Feature and the second show off the new Voice Control feature. What is weird is that copy and paste is a 3.0 firmware features and not specific to the iPhone 3GS. What is also weird is that that commercials say, “This is the new iPhone” not “This is the new iPhone 3GS.” And, once again, they have changed the theme song! *tear. I always get a little sad when they change the theme song (they have changed it with each release of a new iPhone…so, three times). The new theme song is “If I Had Eyes” by Jack Johnson. Apple’s iPhone Optimized User Guide

If you are looking for a way to learn a little bit more about your iPhone or maybe have a question about how a specific feature works…you might want to check out Apple’s iPhone User Guide. It is a nicely iPhone optimized user guide with a ton of info. The User Guide’s web address is http://help.apple.com/iphone. You have to be on an iPhone or iPod Touch for the Guide to display correctly. [Read more...]
Apple Changes iPhone 3G S to iPhone 3GS
I can not tell you how happy it makes me to see that Apple is quietly (yes, quietly) changing the name of the iPhone 3G S to the iPhone 3GS. I have actually been watching this for a couple of days now. It started with their Press Releases and News Headlines. I was waiting until they made changes on their actual website before writing anything. Last night, they finally changed their iPhone 3GS information page to say iPhone 3GS instead of iPhone 3G S. More Info on Push Notifications

The push notifications feature is slowly being released by Apple. Today, both AIM and BeeJive released updates with push notification. It’s great. Right now I have AIM and AP Mobile using the push service and it works great. Even when my iPhone is locked and put away for a while, it pops right up with a noise and message. Very nice. I find something very very important missing from the feature. First, here’s what Apple has to say in it’s “iPhone User Guide”.
This setting appears when you’ve installed an application from the App Store that uses
the Apple Push Notification service.Push notifications are used by applications to alert you of new information, even when the application isn’t running. Notifications differ depending upon the application, but may include text or sound alerts, and a numbered badge on the application’s icon on the Home screen.
You can turn notifications off if you don’t want to be notified or want to conserve battery life.
Turn all notifications on or off: Tap Notifications and turn notifications on or off. Turn sounds, alerts, or badges on or off for an application: Tap Notifications, then choose an application from the list and choose the types of notification you want to turn on or off.
Now for the missing part. More feature rich notification controls. Right now you can turn on and off the badge, sound and pop ups individually. That’s awesome! But what if I don’t want people IMing me at 3:00am or don’t want news alerts all weekend. I think there needs to be a time control Facebook and Twitter already do this for my text messaging. It’s great! Off at 11:00pm and on at 7:00am. What is Apple’s solution to this? You might think, “Just turn it of when you go to bed”. Well, I don’t want to do that, because what if there is some weather app someday that I have notifications turned on when there is a tornado warning. I’ll want to hear that when I’m sleeping. 1 Million 3GS iPhones Sold
Ok, many of you have probably already heard about this but, in just three days (from Friday to Sunday) Apple sold over a million 3GS iPhones. So much for the thought that the new features were not cool enough for people to upgrade! It would be interesting to know how many of the 1 million are new iPhone customers and how many are upgrades.
Apple also said that in the first five days of the 3.0 firmware release, over 6 million people have download it! I think out of all the firmware updates, more people have upgraded to 3.0 than any other firmware. Let us know in the comments if you didn’t upgrade to the 3.0 firmware and why you didn’t!
“Customers are voting and the iPhone is winning,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “With over 50,000 applications available from Apple’s revolutionary App Store, iPhone momentum is stronger than ever.”
AT&T and Apple Stores Opening Early Tomorrow
It seems that most Apple and AT&T stores will be opening early tomorrow morning for the launch of the iPhone 3GS. Our local AT&T store will be opening at 7:00am (normally they open at 10:00am) for pre-order customers and once they are done with the pre-order customers, they will open the doors to everyone else.
Our Apple store is implementing a different strategy. They are going to be opening at 7:00am (normally open at 10:00am) to everyone however, they will have two lines; one for pre-order customers and one for those who have not pre-ordered. [Read more...]
