Ok, I’m not sure how long this has been there but, I just noticed that Cydia has a Queue feature! Yesterday, I was installing an application and I decided to Cancel it instead of Confirm it (which I rarely do)…that is when I noticed the pop-up had the options to Continue Queuing or Cancel and Clear. I was like, WHAT…when did Cydia get a queue!!! So, I thought I would check it out! Here is how it works.

When you select Install on an application, you get the next screen in which you can Confirm or Cancel the install. If you select Cancel, you are given the option to queue it or to cancel the install. If you select Continue Queuing, it will keep that app in a “Queue.” You are then able to add more applications to the queue by selecting them, selecting install, selecting cancel and then selecting the Continue Queuing option. Once you have added all the apps you would like to install to the queue, you can select Install on the last application and then select Confirm (you will notice that all the apps in your queue are listed on the Confirm page)…this will install all the apps in your queue.

I did notice a few other nice features. When you add an application to the queue, it shows up as a light green color in your application list in Cydia (making it easy to see which apps are in your queue). If you select a package you have added to the queue, you will see that it also adds a little area before all the apps info saying that the package is in the queue and what is going to be done with the package (such as; New Install). You will also notice that it adds a Q’d badge on your Manage option on the lower menu bar. If you select the Manage option (when you have apps in your queue) there will be a Queue button in the upper right corner. When selected, you will get the “normal” Cancel or Confirm page in which all your queued apps are listed. If you select Confirm, it will install all the apps in your queue.

If you decide that you would like to remove one of the applications from the queue you can select that application again and then select Modify in the upper right corner (where it normally says Install). You will get a pop-up with the options Clear, Install and Cancel. Though, I cannot really figure out how to use the clear option. When I select it, it brings me to the Cancel/Confirm page. If I select Cancel it just brings me back to the Continue Queuing or Cancel and Clear pop-up. If I select Confirm, it installs all the apps in the my queue…including the one I wanted to clear. Let me know if you have figured out how the Clear option works.

Another issue I have run into is that if you add a few applications to your queue and then you accidentally hit the Cancel and Clear option, it clears your entire queue and not just that current application. It would be nice if it would clear just that app and not your entire queue.

Overall, I think it takes a little time (and a few tries) to really get the hang of using the queue. I think there could be a few improvements to make it a little more user friendly but, still a very awesome feature!! Honestly, I’m totally psyched about the queue…it is going to make my job a lot easier!

P.S. You can use the queue feature the same way for uninstalling apps as well.
P.S.S. I will be making a step-by-step guide on how to use the Cydia queue for our F.A.Q page…I will post a link once I have it is ready.

This morning when I opened Cydia, I was greeted with a “new” tag on the announcement by Saurik. Of course my curiosity immediately sparked so, I clicked on the link. I then read a short blurb about how Microsoft had bought Cydia and how Cydia might be in for a few changes. Just as I finished reading the story, Doug walked around the corner and I (in a small state of shock and confusion) said, “Microsoft bought Cydia.” That is when Doug gently reminded me that today was April Fool’s Day!! I’m sad to say that I fell for this one (and I know I’m not the only one!!!).

Just to clear some things up, the Cydia Store is not a different application. It’s just an update to the current Cydia App. For those of you who do not know what I’m talking about, you will need to jailbreak your iPhone to get Cydia. It was also expected to be released last night but took a little longer than expected. Here’s some of the updates from the developer through the night and this morning that give out more details:

saurik: @TekkDave The Cydia Store will support PayPal, but not until next week: initially I’m using Amazon Payments. (Many people want/need PayPal.)

saurik: >@micaheljcaboose Yeah, when I say "late" I really mean it: while it /is/ technically Saturday here I tend to say I live on Japanese time. ;P

saurik: @Iphonegig While I doubt most themes will be charged for I know a few large design houses wanted to do really professional themes for money.

saurik: @hotcereal If this isn’t released in another hour and a half (5AM PST) I’m going to be super sad. Really, I want even much sooner than that.

saurik: @blued888 No, I suck . I am still working on it, and it’s even after 5AM. I am trying to move everything to production, and ran into pain.

saurik: @fusenuk The first package I am selling is DRM-free. I intend to work with the existing commercial applications to handle their current DRM.

saurik: @stewling This is an upgrade to Cydia, both client and website, to support payment processing. This actually /helps/ the case against Apple.

saurik: @blackforce I just rushed the completion of Google Login support (I was just going with Facebook) as too many people hate Facebook. Soon!

saurik: @DoGudSound This release is actually going to support both. When I release comments/ratings the non-Facebook experience will be non-awesome.

saurik: @Steaps Comments and ratings will be out soon: I just want to think through scalability one more time (I don’t want it to kill payments ;P).

saurik: @Jglaus The Cydia Store is a feature of the new Cydia. If you don’t have Cydia yet, you will need to use QuickPwn. http://tinyurl.com/7wkmt2

saurik: @PwnZone I have a schedule set for the first few weeks, in order of difficulty, as I add features. After that, users will be able to submit.

saurik: @geowarrior I am going to work on PayPal support for next week. (I did Amazon first as PayPal has a worse experience and is more expensive.)

Purchasing an app was pretty easy. I just had to sign in with either Facebook Connect or your Google account. I also had to sign into my Amazon account for payment (paypal coming soon). Once both of those are set up it was really easy. Here’s some screenshots of the process:

I personally do not think it’s illegal to jailbreak the iPhone. The iPhone is a computer running OS X. Just like my iMac, I can install whatever I want on it.

The opening of the Cydia Store will definitely speed up the process of whatever Apple is trying to do to stop all of this. When you’re making money that they think they should be making, they act. A good example is the changing of the name of modmyiphone, modmyifone and modmyi. I also remember everythingicafe being everythingiphone. Both sites added a store for selling accessories and Apple didn’t like them using their trademarked names to sell stuff. I actually agree with Apple on that one. We’ll see how this all turns out soon enough I’m sure.

From the article at the Wall Street Journal I’ve learned that the charge will be the same to developers, 30%, for sales in the Cydia Store. I don’t really agree with the article that the Cydia Store is a threat to the App Store. You’ll have to jailbreak to get the Cydia Store and jailbreaking voids your warranty. Most people won’t jailbreak their iPhone in exchange of losing their warranty and Apple’s support is very good. The Cydia Store, if allowed to stay open, will most likely pull in developers who were kicked out of the App Store but won’t typically pull in first time apps. If a developer is smart, they will develop for the App Store first because it’s on every iPhone. More iPhones equals more sales. I support what Saurik is doing and it will be kewl for the jailbreakers but it most likely won’t “break Apple’s grip on the iPhone.”

I didn’t notice any huge new changes though, I did notice a few things. When you first open Cydia, it now says Loading Data on the screen instead of just sitting there loading. Which, I guess is nice info! I noticed something similar when refreshing the Changes option and installing an application. It now says Reloading Data on the screen when it updates the Changes page and when it installs/updates the app…you can then select the Return to Cydia option. Another thing I noticed is that a lot more packages seem to have the fancy animated icons…which is cool.

I did not notice any new features such as app ratings (which I know you are all still waiting for!). Let me know if you noticed any other new changes to Cydia with the update.

Well, it seems that I have missed a very cool new feature in Cydia. When you are on the Home option (on the lower menu bar) in Cydia, you get a menu with options such as Featured Packages, More Packages Source, F.A.Q…etc. If you select the Featured Packages option, you get a nice list of the featured applications (sponsored, free, commercial…etc). Everything seems normal but, wait until you select one of the apps…things get all crazy!

When you select one of the featured apps, keep your eye on the icon in the upper right corner. Yes, it was totally animated…switching from the icon that represents what category the app is in to the application’s actual icon. Not only is it cool that it is animated but, I love that you now get to see the app’s actual icon instead of the generic icon that represents what category the app is in! This is currently implemented in all the apps in the Featured Packages section as well as the sources in the More Package Sources section. Though, I heard through the grape vine that this is going to work it’s way into more areas of Cydia! Very cool! Cydia is like all fancy now!
