iPhone Firmware 4.0 Beta 3 Has Rotation Lock, iPod Controls & iPod Icon

Firmware 4.0Apple released iPhone firmware 4.0 beta 3 today and then quickly pulled it back down. We haven’t heard if it’s back up yet but we have heard of some of the new features. First, when double clicking the homebutton and seeing the icons of the apps running in the background you can now swipe to the left and see new buttons. The first is a orientation lock. When it’s selected the iPhone locks it orientation to portrait and shows an indicator in the status bar. From what I can see in video demonstrations, it does not lock in the current position but always forces back to portrait. Hopefully this is changed in a later update and will lock in which ever way you had it when pressing that icon.

Another feature is the iPod controls in the same area mentioned above. You can go back, play, pause or go forward a song. I’m really glad they brought this back. This is one reason I went back to 3.1.3 from 4.0 Beta 1. When running in the morning I can’t switch from RunKeeper to iPod to skip to the next song. I used to just double tap and get iPod controls to skip ahead. Really glad this is back. You can also get right to the iPod app form this same swipe to the left location. [Read more…]

iPhone Firmware 4.0 Event Preview This Thursday!

AppleApple will be holding an event this Thursday, April 8th at 10:00am PT to show off the new 4.0 Firmware. One of the biggest features rumored to be announced is the ability to run applications in the background simultaneously. Additionally rumored is that hitting the home button twice will bring up an Exposé like view of the apps currently running. Instead of showing screenshots of current apps, it would show the icon of the apps. This would be one of the main features that competitor devices like Androids and the Palm Pre have. Of course, if you’re jailbroken, you can already do this with Backgrounder.

Firmware 3.1.3 Released

AppleApple has release a new firmware for the iPhone, version 3.1.3. This isn’t the new firmware we’ve all been waiting for. That’s either 3.2 or 4.0. This update just brings some bug fixes. Here is the list of changes in firmware 3.1.3:

– Fixes but that may cause an app to crash when using the Japanese Kana keybaord

iPhone 4.0 Firmware Rumors

Firmware There are a lot of rumors flying with almost a week until the upcoming Apple event where the tablet is supposed to make it’s appearance. Many think that the iPhone firmware and the tablet firmware are very similar and to keep things secret about the tablet, Apple hasn’t updated the iPhone firmware lately. Some say features of the new tablet will trickle back to the iPhone. Here are some of the rumors of the new iPhone 4.0 firmware via Boy:

There will be multi-touch gestures OS-wide. (Would make sense for that as the rumored OS for the iTablet is close if not the same as the iPhone)

“A few new ways” to run applications in the background — multitasking.

Many graphical and UI changes to make navigating through the OS easier and more efficient. We haven’t had this broken down, but we can only hope for improved notifications, a refreshed homescreen, etc.

3.0.1 Jailbreak The Dev-Team has tweeted that the redsn0w jailbreak does work on the 3.0.1 firmware however, you need to point it to the 3.0 IPSW. They say it even works on the iPhone 3GS and with ultrsn0w. They do not have anything posted on their blog yet. Below is their tweet.

iphone_dev tweet
– “Early adopters have found that redsn0w JB *already* works on 3.0.1 (just point it at 3.0 IPSW!) Even for 3GS & ultrasn0w.”

iPhone 3.1 beta 3 – New Features

##ICON_NAME## Apple has released firmware 3.1 beta 3 to developers. The firmware has been found to have a few cool new features (see list below).

Note: If you are a developer, you will need to update to 3.1 beta 3 before July 29th because 3.1 beta 2 expires at midnight on the 28th.

    • Copy and paste videos – You can now copy and paste videos in your e-mails. There is a 15 MB limit for copying/pasting videos or images. This limit is most likely there to save bandwidth usage (see demo video below).
    • Tethering counter – If you go to Settings -> Genral -> Usage on your iPhone, you’ll notice Tethering data which shows how much tethering you’ve used. Note: Tethering is not available to AT&T users yet.
    • Springboard icons – When you hold down the Springboard icons they no longer vibrate.
    • Baseband updated – The baseband has been updated to 05.11.04.
    • Camera API additions

Firmware 3.1 Beta Brings New Features But Breaks Unlock *UPDATED*

AppleApple has seeded firmware 3.1 to developers and there is already info coming out on the new features. Of course, they have updated the baseband so if you want to unlock, don’t upgrade. Also, If you want to jailbreak, don’t upgrade. There is speculation that if you upgrade, you may never be able to jailbreak again. Here’s info from the Dev Team and then a list of new features.

You’ve seen us give this warning before, and there are only so many ways to say it or come up with a clever title :) But here it is: ultrasn0w users must stay away from any firmware updates past 3.0 (including today’s 3.1 beta) until we release the tools that let you update the firmware without updating the baseband. For most phones out there, baseband updates are irreversible and you’ll lose ultrasn0w.

The 3.0 jailbreak was one of those (rare) times where both the jailbreak and the unlock coincided (the only other time was 2.2). It’s important that people realize that *most* firmware releases aren’t like that, and you need to take steps (via the tools) to separate the firmware update from its included baseband update.

This warning does not apply to the iPhone 2G, which uses BootNeuter for the unlock, not ultrasn0w.
