The update to version 1.5 of FontSwap does a few things. First off, it adds a new Restore Default Fonts option which allows you to change all fonts back to default at once (instead of having to go into each option and change them back to default one at a time). It also fixes the default alignment issues. Now, when you go back to the default system font, the badge, time…etc are all aligned correctly. YAY!

I am still having an issue with the non-default fonts and their alignment, they still seem to be off a few pixels. Hopefully we will see an update that fixes this as well but for now, at least the defaults are back to normal.

Now you just need to SSH it to this folder: /private/var/mobile/Library/FontSwap/Packages/

You’ll want to put the DroidSans folder in the above folder and rename it DroidSans.font

Now just go into FontSwap app and select that font. You probably won’t see a preview of the font but it will still work. Here’s what it looks like:

FontSwap has been updated to version 1.4 and it now works on firmware 3.0. When I tested it, I was able to change the Dialer/Calculator, LockClock, Note and System fonts and then change them back to the default font (using the app) with no problem.

The only thing that has change with the app is that it now changes the Calculator font (which it did not used to do). Other than that, you still open the app, choose a category and pick from a list of the previewed fonts. You can get FontSwap via the BigBoss source.

Remember, you can install additional fonts via Cydia. Just search for FontSwap.

Note: After further testing, I found that when you change your fonts back to default it messes up the alignment of the badge numbers, clock in status bar and other areas. Uninstalling it does not fix the problem. Hopefully we will see an update to fix this issues. I would suggest holding off on installing this app until we see another update.

Those of you who use FontSwap, an application that allows you to change the fonts on your iPhone or iPod Touch, probably know that the app has not been updated to work on the 3.0 firmware. When I tested FontSwap on an iPhone running 3.0, it did not crash the device (as some claim it has done) however, the fonts did not change. I did some searching and found a way to make it work manually. This method requires ssh and overwriting of files so, make sure you are comfortable with both those things before you begin. The instructions below were originally written by dazzastark (via modmyi)…I did make a few modifications to them. There is a link to the original post below the instructions.

Instructions:

1. Install FontSwap in Cydia via the BigBoss source. When you install FontSwap, it will also install the FontSwap Starter app.

NOTE: DO NOT ACTUALLY RUN FONTSWAP (I didn’t have any issues when I ran it…some people however, are experiencing issues)

2. Open the FontSwap application.

3. Decide which fonts you wish to use (but do not actually choose any fonts in the app). Ex) LockClock Fonts – Zapfino, Notes Fonts – Calibri

4. Remember the names of the fonts you would like.

5. SSH into your phone. For more info on SSH…please see THESE instructions.

6. Navigate to /private/var/mobile/Library/FontSwap/Packages. Here you will find the folders; Dialer Fonts, LockClock Fonts, Notes Fonts, System Fonts. Inside each of these folders will be the font folders.

7. Open the folder of the font you would like to use. Inside the font’s folder will be a .ttf font file. Copy the file to your computer. Repeat this step for all the fonts you would like to replace.

8. Navigate to /System/Library/Fonts/Cache on your device. This is where all the stock fonts are kept.

9. Backup the stock font you are replacing by either copying it to your computer or renaming it. You will know which font because it is the same name as the font file you copied in step 7. Ex) LockClock.ttf

10. Drag the font(s) that you saved on your computer in step 7 into this directory (/System/Library/Fonts/Cache).

11. Respring and you’re done!

I tested this method and I was able to change my fonts (see screenshots below) and put them back to the stock fonts with no problem. You can see the original thread for the instructions HERE. Warning: The original thread does contain some inappropriate images.

Below are screenshots of all the LockScreen, Notes and System font options that come stock with the FontSwap 1.0b application. The first screenshot will show the title of the font highlighted in blue…the screenshots following that are in that font. This can get a little confusing in the System Font screenshots. Just remember…blue highlight then screenshots of the font.

Well, it seems that FontSwap has made it’s way to firmware 2.x. A different icon, a much different user interface but overall, the same idea. The application opens to the main menu where you will find four options; Dialer Fonts, LockClock Fonts, Notes Fonts and System Fonts. The Dialer Fonts will change the font of your keypad when you dial a phone number. The LockClock Fonts will change the font of the clock on your lock screen. The Notes Fonts will change the font within your Notes application and the System Fonts change basically everything else. The system font includes your icon labels, pop-up font, font in all your menus, font within applications (ex. Settings, WinterBoard)….basically all other font on your iPhone or iPod Touch.

From the main menu, you can select any of the four options (Dialer Fonts, LockClock Fonts, Notes Fonts or System Fonts) to see what fonts are available for each option. Once you are on the list of fonts, you can tap the font title to select it. Once selected, you will get a pop-up with one of the following options.

For the Dialer Fonts you will have the options to Install & Relaunch Phone, Install Only or Cancel.
For the LockClock Fonts you will have the options to Install & Respring iPhone, Install Only or Cancel. For the Notes Fonts you will have the option to Installer & Launch Notes, Install Only or Cancel and for the System Fonts you will have the options to Installer & Respring iPhone, Install & Relaunch FontSwap or Cancel.

If you are changing more than one of your fonts you can select the Install option however, when you select the last font you will want to select the Install and Respring option. If you are only changing one font…be sure to select the Install and Respring option. Basically you will always want to respring your iPhone when you are ready to leave the FontSwap application.

Once your iPhone or iPod Touch has resprung, you will see the new fonts! Overall, this application works very nicely. I had no issues with crashing or messing up my iPhone. I did have an issue installing the application. I ended up having to restart my iPhone and then install the app. Before I restarted my iPhone…it would crash half way through installing. I also found that the one font option for the dialer font does not work or at least I can’t see a difference in the font.

Once thing I would love to see in this application is a preview option. The developer did say that the Install & Relaunch FontSwap option in the System Fonts is basically a way to preview the font. But, if you are going to respring your iPhone it is just as easy to see the new font on your iPhone as it is to see it in the FontSwap application. I would like to see a preview option within the actual FontSwap application. Below are some screenshots.

The Lock Clock font and the Notes font work great for me however, the system font did not change at first. I have the Caterpillar app installed and it also has a System Font changing options so, I figured they were probably interfering with each other. So, I turned off the system font option in Caterpillar and then it worked perfectly with FontSwap!! So, if you can’t get the System Font option to work in FontSwap shut of the System Font option in Caterpillar! Also, some of the fonts do not fit very well, including my favorite font Zapfino. What would be sweet is if you could adjust the size of the font too!! Other than that, this app seems to work surprisingly well (especially for still being in beta mode)…some times it does get confused and doesn’t change the preview of the font when you tap Set Font (see last screenshot)…but, once you respring it will change the font to the one you chose. Also, I have only tested this on 1.1.1 as soon as I get it tested on another version…I will let you know how it does. Fontswap is available through the iPod Touch Fans source.
