This app reminds me of the app called SpringDial where you could add an icon for any contact to your home screen to quickly dial them. That app is no longer in Cydia so here’s another option and it has even more features.
Once CallMe is installed, just open the app and pick a contact you want to reach straight from your home screen by tapping the plus sign in the top right. Once you select who you want to contact, pick the number you want to reach them at. Next pick if you want to call them or text them and pick what text you want to show under the icon. Close the app and your iPhone will respring. You’re all set! Read more
Ok, if I was at a costume party tonight, this is totally what I would wear. Of course I wasn’t at a costume party. I was recording episode 24 of our video podcast, i101! Anyway, this thing is totally awesome. An iPhone is hacked to use it’s display out to a 40″ flat screen (that is not actually touch) running on a 2 hour battery that you can wear! There’s a sweet little video, lots of pics and the full details below. Oh, and the flash on the back lights up, I’m so jealous.

TAMPA, FLA., John Savio (Center), Abigail Gardner (Featured as Apple Employee) This year they’re back at it again. John Savio and Reko Rivera went their separate ways. John created the upgraded rendition of the iPhone 4 featured here at 10x to scale, complete with a 40″ LED LCD Panel, a Jailbroken iPhone 4, VGA out from the iPohone, LED Back Camera Light, weighs roughly 75 lbs and uses a mini 12v Battery with 2+ hours of battery life. The costume took a total of 3 days / 40 hours to complete.
BACKSTORY — This all started three years ago Reko Rivera and Bobby Hartman created a wearable large iPhone costume with a real 37″ lcd tv. An iPod was attached with a looping video of a real iphones screen in normal use. Last year with the help of John Savio and John Matthews the team created yet another amazing rendition of the new iPhone 3GS. Savio loved the original idea but wanted to take it to the next level and make it thinner and actually work with user input! With some heavy researching and some solid determination Savio finally found a solution. He managed to modify the software on the iPhone to allow a live dual image output to the large 42″ lcd tv while maintaining the image in landscape mode. Reko originally came up with the idea and really pushed to see his vision come to life two years ago. This year John Savio and Reko Rivera embarked on different projects. John stuck with his love of apple products and Reko ventured off to explore his love of DJ’ing with a mobile DJ setup.
When Apple came out with iOS 4, one of the big features was multitasking. Part of multitasking is double pressing the home button to get to an app switching dock. It’s kind of like command+tab on the mac to switch between apps. Well when you pull up this app switching dock, you can swipe to the left to get a nice little menu that has features like locking the rotation of the screen, quick access to music controls and the icon to the most recent app that’s playing audio in the background like the iPod or Pandora. This super sweet hack is just as the title sounds, a full screen feature for the stock Safari app. This means no address bar and no toolbar at the bottom. Don’t worry, it’s not an all or nothing option. You can use a variety of gestures to initiate full screen mode. There are also other gestures for things like back and scrolling up. This only works on iOS 4 but it works really well. It ran very smooth for us and it’s definitely a keeper! Can’t wait for it to work with the iPad (as of now it’s not compatible)
This app is a very nice way do display all apps that are running in the background. It works on the iPhone or iPad. Since the iPad doesn’t natively support backgrounding, this is a nice way to switch between apps. It will also work with the new 4.0 software and can be activated in pretty much any way you’d like using activator. Once you have some apps running in the background and you bring up Multifl0w, you can rearrange the order of the apps by dragging them around. Here’s a few screenshots and a video demo.
One of the best hacks for the iPhone, SBSettings, now works with firmware 4.0. This hack let’s you swipe the status bar and a drop down menu pops out with all kinds of quick settings like brightness adjustment and toggles for wifi, bluetooth and 3G. There are different themes, all kinds of info like running processes, IP address, & memory. Best of all, it’s free. This is a must have app!
ATTENTION 4.0 USERS: Currently an activator bug prevents the SBSettings window from appearing in some apps. For the time being, load settings, activator, and set SBSettings also to short hold home so you can hold home button to also bring up sbsettings in apps.
This app lets you see what cell towers are around you and what strength you’re getting. It’s amazing how many towers are around that I didn’t notice before. Some towers aren’t exactly where they show up on the map, but it gets you pretty close. It shows you signal strength, which one you’re connected to and all kinds of other info. One thing I’d like to see is the current location needs to move with you and update live, not just updated when app is opened. Read more
3G Unrestrictor has been updated to work with iPhone 4 and firmware 4.x. You know what this means! FaceTime calls anywhere! Now we’ve tested this out, and really it works better on 3G than it does on EDGE but it does work. Once installed you can just open the app and select apps you’d like to fake out. This makes them think your phone is on Wifi instead of 3G or EDGE. Other apps that this can help with instead of FaceTime are the App Store, which won’t let you download apps over 20MB. This goes for videos in iTunes too. Although Skype recently announced the use of Skype over 3G, you can avoid additional costs if they ever do decide to charge for it. Another place this will help is when videos download over 3G they are compressed more which makes them more blurry. With 3G Unrestrictor, YouTube thinks it’s on Wifi and will download the full resolution version. Read more
This app allows you to take pictures or video with the volume buttons instead of trying to hit the little button on the screen. It should help you to keep the camera more still and keep from blurry photos. This only works when the camera app is open or other apps using the camera feature. The news here is that it had been updated to work with 4.0 firmware so now you can use it to take HD 720p video! This is one of my top jailbreak apps that I just gotta have. Read more
This is a major reason why you should jailbreak your iPhone or iPod touch if you haven’t already. Apple made a sweet move by adding the ability to add folders full of icons calling the feature ‘folders‘. Of course they probably just copied the jailbreak hack called ‘categories’. Anyway, I’ll admit that Apple’s implimentation is better and the GUI is beautiful. The major downfall to the feature is the limit of apps you can fit in a folder, just 12.
Well, what if I have 20 ‘Kids Games’ or 30 ‘News’ apps? With Infinifolders you can now have them all in one folder. And this is the stock folders from Apple. Now you can scroll down past the 12 app limit. Here’s a video fo what it looks like. Read more
Apple makes the claim that all of the existing iPhone apps will run on the iPad. This is true but unless the developer updates their app to run on the iPad it looks like this:
That is Facebook and Twitter for the iPhone. At the time of writing this article there were no official alternatives for the iPad for these apps. This is what you would be stuck with. Oh, wait, Apple made this little button down in the bottom right that says 2x. Look what this does: Read more
I have been waiting for this for a while and actually forgot about it. Since Google Android is open source it makes it a little easier to install on the iPhone. Known in the hacking world as planetbeing, in the video he starts with the 1st Gen iPhone booted into the iPhone OS. Then after turning off and back on the iPhone, he shows how he hacked linux to dual boot and then load the Android software. A few things are a little weird, one being the fewer amount of buttons on the iPhone. In the video you see him make a call, receive a text and connect to wifi.
I’ve been looking for a replacement to an app I used to use called iDimLight. It basically mirrored the feature of the Mac laptops that dims the screen to save battery when you’re not using them. I tend to never use the autolock feature and just manually lock my iPhone. Now I can have my screen dim after being on for 45 seconds or whatever I set it to by a new app that works with 3.0 to 3.1.2 called ScreenDimmer.
The app installs into your Settings app and not an icon on our SpringBoard. From Settings you can:
- disable the feature
- have it turn off the backlight or dim it
- toggle option for dimming the screen during charging
- adjust the timing from 5 seconds to 15 minutes
- exclude the feature while running certain apps
- and choose to dim apps with disabled idleTimer (apps like navigation or video playback)
I love this feature and it’s one of those hacks I say is worth jailbreaking for.
When in Safari, you can tap on the Status Bar (this is where the time is displayed on your iPhone) to auto scroll to the top of a web page.
