Jailbreak iPad 1 on iOS 5.0.1 with redsn0w

For this jailbreak I will be using redsn0w for the Mac to jailbreak a first generation iPad running iOS 5.0.1. Most steps are the same on a PC and for other devices such as iPhone3GS, iPhone4, iPhone4-CDMA, iPod touch 3G, & iPod touch 4G. NOTE: iPhone 4S and iPad 2 are not supported at this time.

First you should make sure you are upgraded to firmware iOS 5.0.1. Just go to your Settings app, then General, then Software Update.

Next, sync & back up your device with your computer or iCloud. Now you can download the program redsn0w to your computer. The download links can be found here: blog.iphone-dev.org Once downloaded you’ll need to unzip the file and move the app to your applications folder. Run redsn0w to begin the jailbreak!

You’ll need to turn off your device and be ready to put it into DFU mode. Follow the instructions in the app on how to do that.

On the next screen you will need to make sure “Install Cydia” is checked and click next. Don’t worry about “Enable Multitasking Gestures” because that is part of the new iOS firmware 5.0.1. Now just click next and wait for the software to do the rest. You will see a few crazy screen shown below but soon your device will reboot and you will have a new application called Cydia where you can install all kinda of hacks and mods no available in the Apple App Store.

Note: A few parts of the process may seem like you device freezes up but things like “Moving Applications” and other steps just take a while. Be patient!

Notification Center

There are MANY people who are interested in the new iOS 5 firmware for their iPhones, iPod touches and iPads. Also, many have made the switch to the iPhone since the new iPhone 4S. I get questions every day about the new features so I thought I would write about them here. First on the list of over 200 is the new Notification Center. Before iOS 5, when you reveived a text, facebook notification or alert from an app, it would look like this:

This was very annoying when in the middle of typing, playing a game, remotely controlling a keynote or taking a picture. Also, if you got a second notification, you lost the first. There was no way to go back and see a list of recent notifications. Now, with the new Notification Center, you can get notifications in your status bar. This is much less distracting. You can tap on the notification to open it or just let it go away. If you want to see all notifications just swipe down from the top of your screen. Here you can see all notifications from all apps and clear away ones you’re done with. There’s also a couple widgets showing current weather and stocks. The order and way you receive these notifications can be edited in your Settings App.

Another great feature dealing with the Notification Center is notifications on your lockscreen. You can now see them on your lockscreen and even swipe the icon of the app to open right to that app and notification.

Thank you Apple for finally adding this feature. It was really annoying…

Just Mobile Xtand – The iPhone Stand of Stands

Ok, here is the deal, I was making dinner the other day (or maybe it was breakfast… I can’t remember) anyway… like most of my cooking escapades, I was using my iPhone for the recipe. And, as usual, Doug came in the kitchen halfway through my escapade only to find that my iPhone was dusted with flour, maybe had a sprinkle of seasoning on it and possible been garnished with a few droplets of water (though to my defense… he does always seem to come into the kitchen right in the middle of things when it is the craziest)! And, like usual, he looked at me in horror. “Opps… my bad!”

Normally he just wipes off my iPhone and proceeds to tell me that I really shouldn’t use my iPhone while cooking however, this time he left the room and came back with the Just Mobile Xtand. He put my iPhone on that bad boy and I will never go back. It holds my iPhone perfectly to use while cooking! I’m totally stealing it from him and keeping it in the kitchen! I even like it better then our plastic baggie solution.

If you have been around Apple iPhone School for a while now, you may remember a review Doug did of the Just Mobile Xtand in Sept of 2008! Yes… two years ago! That is why I’m writing about it again. This stand has stood up to the test of time. It has fit every iPhone produced all the way from the first gen iPhone to the iPhone 4. I love the keyboard on the iPhone but if you would rather have a “real” keyboard here are a couple options for you. Both cases connect to your iPhone via Bluetooth. iPhone 4, 3GS & 3G Unlock – ultrasn0w 1.0-1

The iPhone 4 unlock is ready! Remember, unlocking is different from jailbreaking. Unlocking lets you use your iPhone on other carriers. Of course, in the US the only other carrier that works with the iPhone is T-Mobile. This unlock is done by first jailbreaking the iPhone allowing applications to be installed that Apple doesn’t approve of. Then, in Cydia, you will need to add this source: repo666.ultrasn0w.com Then you can install ultrasn0w.

ultrasn0w 1.0-1 is compatible with iPhone4 on baseband 01.59 and 3G/3GS basebands 04.26.08, 05.11.07, 05.12.01 and 05.13.04.

Save iPhone 3GS, 3rd Gen iPod touch or iPad SHSH Using Windows

When Apple releases a new firmware they don’t like people using older firmware. Sometimes jailbreaking new firmware takes a while and if you ever need to restore to your older firmware it won’t work unless you have your SHSH info. This only applies to the iPhone 3GS, 3rd Gen iPod touch and iPad because they all have a ECID in them which stands for “Exclusive Chip ID”. So, to restore to an older firmware you need the SHSH info for that info and for your device. To backup this info from your device there is a sweet little program called AutoSHSH. This is a Windows only program.

Once downloaded just follow these easy steps:
1. Open iTunes
2. Connect your device to the computer via USB

3. Put the device into recovery mode. (hold the lock/power button and the home button until your computer pops up a messages saying, “iTunes has detected an iPhone in recovery mode. You must restore this iPhone before it can be used with iTunes.”)

4. Open AutoSHSH
5. Click OK to confirm that you have an internet connection and a device in recovery mode is plugged in.

6. Click OK to confirm that you have Java Runtime. If you don’t, click no and it will direct you to the download link. Install that and start over at step 4.

7. Click “Grab my SHSH Blobs Automatically”

8. Wait and then it will ask you where you want to save the file.

9. Unplug the device and hold the lock/power button and the home button until it reboots.

Your file is now saved and has been sent to Cydia’s servers. If you need to restore, you will need to point your iTunes to Cydia instead of Apple which you can find instructions on how to do that here:

Apple to Sell $99 8GB iPhone 3GS?

There’s not much info for this rumor, but someone started it, so here it is: Apple will sell an 8GB version of the iPhone 3GS for $99. Currently you can only get the 3GS is sizes as low as 16GB. Having 8GB of space on the iPhone 3GS is pushing it. You have your music, videos & apps. Then you add pictures using the bigger 3MP camera & videos of 640×480 at 30fps you’re going to eat up space quick. Either way, a cheaper iPhone with all the power will be a better choice versus the competition.
