And, as usual, Doug came in the kitchen halfway through my escapade only to find that my iPhone was dusted with flour, maybe had a sprinkle of seasoning on it and possible been garnished with a few droplets of water (though to my defense… he does always seem to come into the kitchen right in the middle of things when it is the craziest)! And, like usual, he looked at me in horror. “Opps… my bad!”

Normally he just wipes off my iPhone and proceeds to tell me that I really shouldn’t use my iPhone while cooking however, this time he left the room and came back with the Just Mobile Xtand. He put my iPhone on that bad boy and I will never go back. It holds my iPhone perfectly to use while cooking! I’m totally stealing it from him and keeping it in the kitchen! I even like it better then our plastic baggie solution.

If you have been around Apple iPhone School for a while now, you may remember a review Doug did of the Just Mobile Xtand in Sept of 2008! Yes… two years ago! That is why I’m writing about it again. This stand has stood up to the test of time. It has fit every iPhone produced all the way from the first gen iPhone to the iPhone 4. It still looks, feels and performs just like it did the day we got it. So, if you are looking for a Christmas gift for that special someone, you may want to check out the Xtand.

Remember, unlocking is different from jailbreaking. Unlocking lets you use your iPhone on other carriers. Of course, in the US the only other carrier that works with the iPhone is T-Mobile. This unlock is done by first jailbreaking the iPhone allowing applications to be installed that Apple doesn’t approve of. Then, in Cydia, you will need to add this source: repo666.ultrasn0w.com Then you can install ultrasn0w.

ultrasn0w 1.0-1 is compatible with iPhone4 on baseband 01.59 and 3G/3GS basebands 04.26.08, 05.11.07, 05.12.01 and 05.13.04.

This is really kewl and I can’t wait for it to be released as a stable package. Right now a few things don’t work and it’s a tedious task to get it installed. What’s new is that it’s now running on an iPhone 3G. Before it was running on only the 1st Gen iPhone.

The hope is that you should soon be able to carry around your first-generation iPhone or iPhone 3G running Android and use it just as normally as you would any other Android phone.


New Features:
- many under-the-hood improvements and bug fixes
- the Wi-Fi driver has been fleshed out with all the Android-specific extensions
- added an Android icon to the boot menu to make it more easily accessible
- groundwork laid for audio support on the 3G, so support for audio in Linux/Android will be coming in a few days.
- improved power management and backlight control very soon

Below is what the Dev-Team has to say:

ultrasn0w for iPhone 3G is ready!

1. Ensure you have upgraded to iPhone OS 3.0
2. Jailbreak your iPhone 3G using redsn0w or PwnageTool (this will also install Cydia/Icy)
3. Run Cydia or Icy
4. Please add the repo repo666.ultrasn0w.com to Cydia or Icy. That last “o” is actually the number zero “0”! If you use the letter “o” you’ll get an error.
5. Search for ‘ultrasn0w’ in cydia or icy and install ultrasn0w
6. Reboot your iPhone 3G
7. T-Mobile USA users should disable 3G before using ultrasn0w
8. Enjoy

Important Note: Upgrading to firmware 3.0 will break your current jailbreak and unlock (see below for more specific information). Also, many of the current jailbroke applications do not work on firmware 3.0.

1st Gen iPhone’s:
You can upgrade to the 3.0 firmware however, you will lose your current jailbreak and your unlock . You will be able to jailbreak as soon as the Dev-Team released the jailbreak which will hopefully be some time today. You will also be able to unlock your iPhone when ultrasn0w is released on Friday. So, if you upgrade to 3.0, you will not be able to unlock your iPhone until Friday. Remember, even once the jailbreak is out, not many of the current jailbroke applications work on firmware 3.0.

Update: According to the comments (and THIS iClarified article), it seems the you will keep your unlock on a 1st gen iPhone even when you upgrade to firmware 3.0. However, there are a few stipulations. Below are those stipulations according to the iClarified article.

“HOWEVER, if you are using the 2G iPhone on an unofficial carrier you may loose your activation. This means that will your network will be detected but you will not be able to use your iPhone.

You will loose your activation if you used QuickPwn to jailbreak your iPhone. If you used PwnageTool you will not.

If you are super excited about iPhone 3.0 and wish to update immediately, either make sure you jailbroke with PwnageTool or rejailbreak using PwnageTool and then do the update.

Otherwise wait for a little bit and the iPhone Dev-Team will release new PwnageTool and QuickPwn utilities shortly.”

Note: The following features of the 3.0 firmware will not work on a 1st Gen iPhone:
    • Send and receive photos, contacts, audio files, and location via MMS
    • Internet Tethering over USB and Bluetooth
    • Stereo Bluetooth

iPhone 3G (2nd Gen iPhones):
You can also upgrade to firmware 3.0 however, you will also lose your jailbreak and your unlock. You will be able to jailbreak as soon as the Dev-Team released the jailbreak (hopefully today). You will also be able to to unlock your iPhone 3G, on the 3.0 firmware, when ultrasn0w is released on Friday. yellowsn0w will not work on the 3.0 firmware. Remember, even once the jailbreak is out, not many of the current jailbroke applications work on firmware 3.0.

iPhone 3GS:
We do not know much about this yet, we will know more about jailbreaking and unlocking the iPhone 3GS on Friday when it is released.

It’s made out of aluminum and has rubber feet so it won’t slide around. Being made out aluminum makes it a little light for my liking although it’s not really sliding around too much on me like I thought it would. It comes with rubber mounts for all four corners of the iPhone and are interchangeable for both 1st Gen and iPhone 3G. There is a hole in the back of the stand for your USB cord but only the USB to computer part fits through it. The end that connects to the iPhone doesn’t fit so if you’re cord is plugged into the computer you have to unplug it to get the stand detached. It also rotates for horizontal viewing and you can adjust the height slightly. The stand costs about $40 and is distributed in the US by nuCourse Distribution. Visit the Xtand website at xtand.net.
