Below is the basic information about how jailbreaking and unlocking will work on the 3.0 firmware for the 1st gen iPhone, the iPhone 3G and the iPhone 3GS.

Important Note: Upgrading to firmware 3.0 will break your current jailbreak and unlock (see below for more specific information). Also, many of the current jailbroke applications do not work on firmware 3.0.

1st Gen iPhone’s:
You can upgrade to the 3.0 firmware however, you will lose your current jailbreak <strike> and your unlock </strike>. You will be able to jailbreak as soon as the Dev-Team released the jailbreak which will hopefully be some time today. <strike>You will also be able to unlock your iPhone when ultrasn0w is released on Friday. So, if you upgrade to 3.0, you will not be able to unlock your iPhone until Friday. </strike> Remember, even once the jailbreak is out, not many of the current jailbroke applications work on firmware 3.0.

Update: According to the comments (and THIS iClarified article), it seems the you will keep your unlock on a 1st gen iPhone even when you upgrade to firmware 3.0. However, there are a few stipulations. Below are those stipulations according to the iClarified article.

“HOWEVER, if you are using the 2G iPhone on an unofficial carrier you may loose your activation. This means that will your network will be detected but you will not be able to use your iPhone.

You will loose your activation if you used QuickPwn to jailbreak your iPhone. If you used PwnageTool you will not.

If you are super excited about iPhone 3.0 and wish to update immediately, either make sure you jailbroke with PwnageTool or rejailbreak using PwnageTool and then do the update.

Otherwise wait for a little bit and the iPhone Dev-Team will release new PwnageTool and QuickPwn utilities shortly.”

Note: The following features of the 3.0 firmware will not work on a 1st Gen iPhone:
    • Send and receive photos, contacts, audio files, and location via MMS
    • Internet Tethering over USB and Bluetooth
    • Stereo Bluetooth

iPhone 3G (2nd Gen iPhones):
You can also upgrade to firmware 3.0 however, you will also lose your jailbreak and your unlock. You will be able to jailbreak as soon as the Dev-Team released the jailbreak (hopefully today). You will also be able to to unlock your iPhone 3G, on the 3.0 firmware, when ultrasn0w is released on Friday. yellowsn0w will not work on the 3.0 firmware. Remember, even once the jailbreak is out, not many of the current jailbroke applications work on firmware 3.0.

iPhone 3GS:
We do not know much about this yet, we will know more about jailbreaking and unlocking the iPhone 3GS on Friday when it is released.

This is not the first time we will have seen a red product by Apple. The iPod Nano and Shuffle currently have red versions as a part of the (PRODUCT) RED campaign by Apple, which aims to support the fight against AIDS in Africa by giving “a portion of the purchase price to the Global Fund to fight AIDS in Africa.” You can learn more about (PRODUCT) RED HERE on Apple’s Website.

Could be a rumor…could be true?! I actually kind of like the red. Let us know in the comments what you think.

The Dev Team continues to keep us updated on their progress. They are still trying to work out a few bugs (scroll way down) but, they have posted a list on what PwnageTool 2.0 supports so far. It looks as though everything can be jailbroke and activated however, they do not have the iPhone 3G unlocked yet. Check it out:

So, currently (when released) PwnageTool 2.0 will support:-

    • iPhone (1st Gen) with 2.0 – Activated, Unlocked & Jailbroken, (with support for third party applications).

    • iPod Touch with 2.0 – Activated & Jailbroken, (with support for third party applications).

    • iPhone (3G) with 2.0 – Activated, Jailbroken (with support for third party applications).

We’ve made some progress on the baseband unlock of the 3G device, but at this point PwnageTool will not support 3G unlocking or BootNeuter on the 3G device. It is, of course supported on the first generation device with 2.0. We’ll push out an update with 3G support if and when it is completed.

As soon as we fix this up and test a bit more we’ll be ready for release, we’ll get back to you with a release schedule soon.

Below is the rest of the update via the Dev Team.

So we’ve been working hard on getting the release ready and during this process we’ve been fixing some final bugs, the actual base of PwnageTool application is working fine and working with all devices that we support. We’ve been restoring our devices to various firmware revisions so that we can try to reproduce the conditions that most users will have. We are able to fully install any applications on any part of the current devices running 2.0 (and b103) and these versions are the iPhone 114, iPhone 2.0, iPhone 3G.

Apple released an update (b103) just before we were about to release and that support had to be added to the current version, it is pointless to release something that doesn’t work on devices out of the box (we’ve been told new 3Gs will have this firmware), we don’t want drama, and we want to do as little support as possible, so we want to make it right the first time.

It was lucky that we delayed slightly as we discovered a bug that causes unexpected behavior when using AppStore and third party applications on the same device. We are working on fixing that bug now, we don’t anticipate it is a big one, it has some really odd side effects, causing WiFi dropouts and the loss of stored passwords for WiFi networks. Of course this is only a minor software issue, nothing like the horrible static MAC address that another “elite byte adjuster” forced upon their users.

The best part of getting a new iPhone is the unboxing…if the packaging isn’t enough to awe over, opening it and seeing your new iPhone definitely is. However, the iPhone is not the only thing that comes in that little black (or white) box. There was some speculation on what accessories would come with the iPhone 3G. Well, here is what you actually get!

When you open the box the first thing you see is the iPhone. After that, is the black info envelope. As with the first generation iPhone, you get a Finger Tips Guide, an Information Guide, two Apple decals and a microfiber screen cleaner. I was sooo excited that they still included the screen cleaner…I never use it but it is just so cute! Below the black information envelope, you will find a pair of headphones, a power adapter and a USB cable. The power adapter is a much different shape then the first time around. It more square than rectangle and you can no longer fold the prongs into the adapter (which was a feature I actually really liked!). They also did not include a dock with the iPhone 3G. You can purchase a dock separately for $29.00. Below are a few pictures Doug took of the iPhone 3G contents.
