I was excited to see Kate was finally available for firmware 2.0 via the Installer. It is a public beta version of the application. I personally am a huge fan of Kate and really miss the features that I use it for. However, when I try to install the app, I get an error. The error says, “Failed script command on line 2: ChangeMode.” Then my iPhone crashed back to the SpringBoard. I was totally bummed…I was looking forward to checking it out. Let me know in the comments if you are getting the same error.

Update:: Below is a list of features that Kate 2.0b4 has. I do think that it is cool that if you previously registered the app, it will carry over to this version of Kate.

All Components:
    • First public beta for firmware 2.0. Can be installed from the repository http://i.ripdev.com/ using Installer 4.
    • All included components reworked to work under 2.0.x with the same functionality. We will expand on the featureset soon.
    • Existing subscriptions will work; you can also request a trial or check your subscription by visiting Settings > RiP Dev > RiP Dev Products preference pane.

EQ:
• This component will not be supported under firmware 2.0 due to significant changes in the audio subsystem.

Uninstall:
• This component is not yet supported (until Installer 4 is final).

Fix IntelliScreen + Kate

Ever since I updated IntelliScreen to 1.07 and 1.08, Kate has not shown up in my Settings. It took me a while to figure what was causing the issue with Kate, I finally realized it was IntelliScreen. I personally am a huge fan of both Kate and InteliiScreen so, I was bummed that they were conflicting. However, thanks to a comment from JW, I found out that I could do some editing of my com.apple.SpringBoard.pist file and fix the problem! Well, I finally had a change to test it out and it worked great!! Here is what you need to do if you are having the same problem.

1. You will need to be able to SSH into your iPhone.

2. Find the com.apple.SpringBoard.plist file on your iPhone. It is located in the System/Library/LaunchDaemons folder.

3. Drag the com.apple.SpringBoard.plist file off of your iPhone and onto to your computer. You will want to change the name of the file to System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.SpringBoard.plist (original) or something similar. That way, you can keep it as a back-up of the original file….just in case!

4. Open the System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.SpringBoard.plist file you saved on your computer with any code editing software (I used Miscrosoft FrontPage).

5. Once it is open, find the part in the code that looks like this – /Library/Intelliborn/intelliScreen:/Library/Frameworks/SummerBoard.framework
/SummerBoard.dylib
Note: There will be other code in front and behind it but, you only need to worry about this section.

6. Delete the bold section of the code shown below. /Library/Intelliborn/intelliScreen:/Library/Frameworks/SummerBoard.framework
/SummerBoard.dylib

7. Replace the section you deleted with this –
/Library/MobileEnhancer/MobileEnhancer.dylib

8. The code should now look like this –
/Library/Intelliborn/intelliScreen:/Library/MobileEnhancer/MobileEnhancer.dylib

9. Save the file as com.apple.SpringBoard.plist (DO NOT SAVE OVER THE TOP OF YOUR ORIGINAL FILE).

10. Drag the com.apple.SpringBoard.plist that you edited and saved back into the System/Library/LaunchDaemons folder on your iPhone.

11. Restart your iPhone and check your Settings…RiP Dev should show up now!

This worked for me. I was able to use both Kate and IntelliScreen like normal.

Kate 1.3.1

Kate (also known as Caterpillar) has been update to version 1.3.1. The update only adds one new feature to the application however, it does fix a few bugs and compatibility issue. The new feature is the ability to do a fast respring which means you are able to respring your SpringBoard without going to the lock screen (this will only work with firmware 1.1.3 and up). There is one bug fix that is really nice, Kate is now compatible with Dock, Screenshot and other similar applications. So, those of you who didn’t want to use Kate in the past because it was not compatible with Dock…you are good to go! Also, according to the developers of Kate, this will be the last update for 1.1.x firmware. Any future releases will only be compatible with firmware 2.0 (which only means we are getting closer! YAY!). Below is the complete change log via the developer. Kate is available through the Rip Dev source.

Mobile Enhancer:
    • New version works around the incompatibility issues with numerous products that have daemon applications that use UIKit, such as Dock, Screenshot, and others.
Smart Dialer:
    • Better detection of numbers prefixed with GSM codes.
    • Several fixes for better detection of numbers.
    • Fixed a potential crash when making a call while engaged in another phone call.
Settings:
    • Fast respring for 1.1.3+
FaceLift:
    • Fixed some potential problems while using themes.
Reminder:
    • Fixed a potential crash when all notifications are turned off.
EQ:
    • To conform to the rules, EQ module only works when the iPod EQ is turned on in the Settings.
    • No longer affects the ringtones because some of them were awfully distorted.

Caterpillar changed to Kate (1.3)

Version 1.3 of Caterpillar brings some interesting changes….including a name change. Caterpillar has now been changed to Kate due to legal reasons. Below is a snipit from Kate’s website.

Due to a legal dispute with Caterpillar, Inc, the new name of the package is Kate.

Because Caterpillar, Inc, the makers of heavy machinery have demanded the name Caterpillar is infringing their copyright (apparently the bulldozers have their own operating system named the same way!), RiP Dev, the makers of the most advanced commercial collection of tools for the iPhone, have decided to settle the conflict in a peaceful way and change the name to Kate. The name Kate resembles a Russian female name Katya, which is a signature name for many Russians (and RiP Dev, having Russian roots, wholeheartedly thinks you will like the new name).

Though the name has changed, the icon and the logo are still the same. There are also no changes to the actual functionality of the app…just a simple name change. Besides the name change, there are few other new feature (see list below). Out of all the new options, I really like the new Night Mode setting! Under Privacy there is now an option to turn off incoming call and texts during certain hours of the day! I think that is totally sweet. You just go in and set a Start Time and an End Time. So, if you don’t want any calls or texts from 11:00pm until 5:00am…just put those as your Start and End times! Very cool! There are a few other cool new features…check out the list below! Caterpillar is available through the RiP Dev source.

All Components:
    • Due to a legal dispute with Caterpillar, Inc., the name of the product is changed to Kate.
EQ (new component):
    • New component: three-band equalizer for the iPod application — you are no longer limited by the default EQ presets.
µCalendar:
    • Added an option to enable or disable birthdays from the contacts list (as Outlook duplicates them).
    • All-day events for the next day are now properly displayed as the next day.
Privacy:
    • Added the night mode setting to disable incoming calls and SMS messages sounds during the specified interval.
Reminder:
    • Reminder no longer produces notifications during a phone call.
