A few days ago (yes, I’m behind on email!) we got a nice tip from Joe that Hotmail on the iPhone was now available in the US. Well, I did a little testing today and he is right!! About three weeks ago, I wrote about the ability to get Hotmail on your iPhone in select countries. In that article I mentioned that they were going to make POP3 technology available for other countries as the year progresses…well, it seems they have done just that!

I was able to easily set-up my Hotmail account on my iPhone using the steps below (provided by mattyb123)

All you have to do is:
- Open the Settings app
- Go to Mail, Contacts, Calendars
- Tap ‘Add Account’
- Choose ‘Other’ for the account type
- Type your name, email and password.
- Tap ‘Save’ (step added by Brooke)
- Tap ‘Next’
- Close Settings and open up Mail
- Refresh your mail and it will show your messages.

After typing the info and then tapping next, it told me that I needed a Windows Live Mail Plus account to use my account in Mail. I don’t have a Plus account but it still works.

When I went back into my stock Mail application, after completing the steps above, my Hotmail account was there! It was simple and easy…I did not have to change any port settings. If you are having problems…you will want to check out Microsoft’s blog entry about rolling out POP3 for more info. But, for me, it went really smoothly.

Ok, here is the deal. I have been hearing about Hotmail on the iPhone (and receiving emails about it) for a while now. I put off writing about it because I could not personally test it. However, mattyb123 from our forum, has written a nice tutorial so…I thought I would pass it along.

It seems that Microsoft Hotmail Live now supports POP3 Technology however, it is limited to a few countries including; Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Netherlands, Spain and the United Kingdom. You can check out Microsoft’s blog entry about rolling out POP3 for more info! On a side note, it seems that they will continue to make the POP3 technology available for other countries as the year progresses.

Below is mattyb123’s tutorial on how to set it up on your iPhone…for those of you which it is available.

You can now use your hotmail account in the Mail.app. I have been waiting for this because the mobile version didn’t show any images just codes for them.

All you have to do is:
- Open the Settings app
- Go to Mail, Contacts, Calendars
- Tap ‘Add Account’
- Choose ‘Other’ for the account type
- Type your name, email and password.
- Tap ‘Save’ (step added by Brooke)
- Tap ‘Next’
- Close Settings and open up Mail
- Refresh your mail and it will show your messages.

After typing the info and then tapping next, it told me that I needed a Windows Live Mail Plus account to use my account in Mail. I don’t have a Plus account but it still works.

There is a hack out that will allow you to change your email signature in Mail. We wrote about it before for older firmware but someone emailed us and asked why it doesn’t work with 2.x firmware. The main reason is the directory path has changed to mobile from root. I’m also updating the link to convert the file to XML. It’s not easy, so be ready to spend a few minutes on this one:

1. Make sure your signature is not the default one that only says, “Sent from my iPhone”. Changing it to anything else so it creates a custom file.

2. Backup existing config file for mail. It’s called com.apple.mobilemail.plist and it’s located in the /private/var/mobile/Library/Preferences/ folder. Just SSH in and copy it to your computer somewhere in case you mess the file up

3. Copy the same file, com.apple.mobilemail.plist, to your desktop so we can edit it.

4. Before we can edit it you must convert it from binary format to ascii/text format using this site: iappcat.com/plist/bin2xml. Just browse for the file we put on the desktop and click convert. It will then give you a file to download. You can just save over the one on the desktop since we made a backup of the original.

5. Open com.apple.mobilemail.plist with a text editor.

6. Find something like this between the
<string></string>
:

Sent from my iPhone.

Learn how to use, hack and mod the iPhone at appleiphoneschool.com.

We will be replacing the above code with our own custom code but we need to convert it from CSS and HTML to XML. To do this, customize the code below and then convert it with centricle.com. (Select Encode)

John Doe

yourwebsite.com

sent from my new iPhone

Your code will look like this after you convert it:

John Doe
yourwebsite.com
sent from my new iPhone

7. Now save the file and upload it to your iPhone via SSH. You may notice that the image doesn’t show up when you go to compose an email. This is because mail doesn’t connect to the internet during composing so you won’t see the image. Also, many email providers block the image anyway. I have found that Gmail, Yahoo & Hotmail block this feature although sending to another iPhone works fine. A possible way around this is to covert the image to data URL. Again, this doesn’t work for most mail providers either. Here’s a site that will convert it for you: http://www.sveinbjorn.org/dataurlmaker. I suggest just using links and other simple coding.

Using the Data URL here’s what it should look like:

Mine doesn’t have the lines in it because I removed that code. And I’m also using the option of the Data URL that’s why you can see the image in Compose Mode. Here is a link to my exact file: com.apple.mobilemail.plist If you need help just email me at help@appleiphoneschool.com.

All you have to do is hold your finger on a picture for a few seconds. A little toolbar will pop up from the bottom and give you the option to save it to your camera roll. If the image is also a link it will give you the option to visit the link. The really nice thing about this is it’s saving the original file size. So once you plug your iPhone or iPod Touch to your computer you can pull the full resolution picture off.

TIP: I use this feature to steal pictures from my friend’s Facebook and Flickr accounts and use them as the photo in their contact info.

There is a hack out that will allow you to change your email signature in Mail. It’s not easy, so be ready to spend a few minutes on this one:

1. Make sure your signature is not the default one that only says, “Sent from my iPhone”. Changing it to anything else so it creates a custom file.

2. Backup existing config file for mail. It’s called com.apple.mobilemail.plist and it’s located in the /private/var/root/Library/Preferences/ folder. Just SSH in and copy it to your computer somewhere in case you mess the file up

3. Copy the same file, com.apple.mobilemail.plist, to your desktop so we can edit it.

4. Before we can edit it you must convert it from binary format to ascii/text format using this site: http://140.124.181.188/~khchung/cgi-bin/plutil.cgi. Just browse for the file we put on the desktop and click convert. It will then give you a file to download. You can just save over the one on the desktop since we made a backup of the original.

5. Open com.apple.mobilemail.plist with a text editor.

6. Find this between the
<string></string>

Again, this doesn’t work for most sites either.

Google now has now released the IMAP service for Gmail accounts. This means that your email can actually synchronize with your iPhone instead of just pulling it down from the server. Before you would setup a Gmail account on your phone by adding an account and clicking on Gmail. If you read email on your iPhone it would still show as new in your Gmail account and vise versa. Now it is synchronized both ways and you can label your emails from the iPhone. Here are the instructions from Google. Also, be patient for the feature to become available for your account. One of my newer Gmail accounts didn’t have the feature available to activate.

UPDATE: 5thirtyone has posted an article explaining some advanced settings you should change to ensure your trash, drafts and sent mail. Here’s a snippet:

Assuming that you have followed the iPhone IMAP setup instructions, it is now time to properly configure your mobile Mail client so that Sent Mail, Deleted Mail, Drafts, and Junk are reflected properly after syncing back between the webmail client and any other desktop clients you may have.

 1. Open ‘Settings’ > ‘Mail’ > [Your Gmail IMAP account] > ‘Advanced’
2. Select ‘Drafts Mailbox’ > ‘On the Server’ > ‘[Gmail] Drafts’. Return to the ‘Advanced’ view.
3. Select ‘Sent Mailbox’ > ‘On the Server’ > ‘[Gmail] Sent Mail’. Return to the ‘Advanced’ view.
4. Select ‘Deleted Mailbox’ > ‘On the Server’ > ‘[Gmail] Trash’. Return to the ‘Advanced’ view.

Any emails sent from your iPhone will appear in Gmail’s ‘Sent’ view, any saved drafts saved on your iPhone will appear in Gmail’s ‘Drafts’ view, and any deleted messages will be reflected in Gmail’s ‘Trash’ view.
