You can also import contacts from an old SIM card. You can even dial numbers right off the SIM card without moving them to your iPhone. I wanted to try this out and move a bunch of contacts from my iPhone to Brooke’s.

First I installed the app on both iPhones. The first thing I noticed was that I could only move one contact at a time to the SIM card. If you want to do more than one at a time you have to pay. It’s $12.95 USD/$9.95 EUR. This should be ok though because we just want to move a few specific contacts. I started tapping some contacts I wanted and it would pop up the Name and Phone Number of the contact and I selected “ok” to transfer to the SIM card. I tried it on a few that just had email address and it didn’t do anything.

I did about 10 to 15 contacts through the letter A and then exited the app. I moved my SIM card to Brooke’s iPhone and all worked fine. Her iPhone is unlocked, so it connected to AT&T just fine. Brooke’s iPhone saw all the contacts on the SIM card right away through iSIM. I copied them all to her iPhone one at a time… I also tested making a call from iSIM which worked perfectly. I closed iSIM and went to Brooke’s contacts to see how things went. Unfortunately it doesn’t work as well as I hoped. For AT&T it only copied the name and work phone number. It didn’t copy the billing number, the image, or the business name field. Here’s a screenshot from both iPhones:

It also didn’t transfer the web address, address, etc. Only the first Phone number and Name. I tried a contact that was already in Brooke’s iPhone and it didn’t make two copies. One thing to be aware of is when you first insert the SIM card you need to wait a few seconds for the iPhone to connect to the carrier before opening iSIM. I had it crash a few times when opening it too soon. So, for basic contact transfer it works well but don’t expect all information to transfer. iSIM is available through the Makayama Source.

The only change with version 1.02 of PhotoDial is the addition of a CoverFlow mode in the Preferences. If you turn on CoverFlow mode, you can scroll through your contacts Cover Flow style (you can still just tap on the photo to call that Contact). The first time I used the Cover Flow option is was really glitchy but, the second time I tried it…it was fine! Doug wouldn’t let me try this version on his 1.1.3 because it messed up his iPhone soo bad last time (he is finally breaking down and restoring it right now! ). So, I have no idea if it still massively messes up a 1.1.3 or not. If someone is brave enough to try it, let us know in the comments if it is working yet! PhotoDial is available through the Makayama Software source. Below are the screenshots:

Version 1.01 of PhotoDial fixed a bug that used to make the app crash if you opened it and you didn’t have any photos assigned to your Contacts. However, the update DOES NOT fix the issue that makes it incompatible with version 1.1.3. When I tested this version(1.01) on a 1.1.3 iPhone…it still crashed…and if your 1.1.3 acts anything like the one I tested it on it will SERIOUSLY mess up your iPhone…including all the things mentioned in my previous post about this app and a few more like erasing all the events out of your calendar, deleted the battery % preference from extended preference etc…etc. However, I will say that it works totally fine on another iPhone running 1.1.1. The moral of the story is, if you are on 1.1.3…wait for another update, if you are on 1.1.1…you should be fine!

A new app PhotoDial is available through the Makayama Software source. This app allows you to call someone by selecting their photo…in order to use this app you will have to have photos added to your Contacts. PhotoDial opens to thumbnails of all your contact’s photos (and for the life of me I cannot figure out any order they are in…definately not alphabetical). To scroll through your contact’s photos just swipe you finger on the screen…you will notice that there are the infamous “white dots” at the bottom so you can tell where you are in your contacts. You can also tap the plus button in the upper right corner to make the photos bigger and then scroll through them that way…just tap the minus button in the upper left corner to make them small again…hit the minus button again to display nine or sixteen photos at a time. Along the bottom menu you will see five options; Main, Contacts, Preferences, About and Help. Main will bring you back to the main screen, Contacts will bring you to a list of your contacts where you can then rearrange the order of them, Preferences gives you the options to turn on/off Home Button (which will make your Home Button double tap shortcut open this app), Confirmations (which will give you a confirmation pop-up every time before you make a call) and Use frames (turns on frames around the photos), About will give you a screen giving you more info about the app and is where you enter your activation code and Help will bring you to a webpage with more info.

Ok…now how to use the app…once you have found the photo of the contact you want to call, just tap on the photo and it will bring up a list of all the numbers available for that contact, just tap on the number you would like to call and it will automatically call it. The cool part is that when you end the call…you will be brought back to PhotoDial (I suppose this could get annoying though). As cool as this app is…it did not work smoothly for me at all. When I was demoing it…it crashed constantly, reset my iPhone at least seven times, reset my HomeButton double-tap shortcut and rearranged the icons on my SpringBoard! I do not have Dock installed so I know it is not conflicted with that…I’m not sure what the deal is (let me know if it worked for you!) You can use the free version of the app or you can buy it for $16.95 (early bird) and then $19.95. If you buy the app you will no longer get the spash screen asking you to Buy or Continue and after 15 times of using the free app you will start to get a pop-up every time you make a call…the full version will get rid of this too. This app is compatiable with all version of firmware (though, I have only tested it on 1.1.3).

Note: I just tested this app on 1.1.1 and it seemed to work fine…so, I’m not sure if it is a 1.1.3 issue or what.

How to add Photos to your Contacts:
    1. Go into your stock Phone application
    2. Go into Contacts
    3. Select a Contact
    4. Select Edit
    5. Tap on Add Photo in the upper left corner
    6. You can then choose to take a photo or choose an existing photo
*If you choose to take a photo…it will open your Camera…you can take the picture…then move and scale it and then set it as your Photo.
*If you choose to choose an existing photo…it will bring you to your Photo Albums where you can choose a photo and then select Set Photo.
    7. Now you will see the added photo and it will show up in PhotoDial.
