I was totally stoked to hear that PocketTouch had made it into the App Store. PocketTouch was definitely one of the most popular jailbroke applications and I always love to see those apps make it to the App Store.

For those of you unfamiliar with the app, PocketTouch is a music controller for your iPhone or iPod touch. The beauty of PocketTouch is that you can control your music without having to look at your device… all the controlling is done through taps, swipes and shaking.

Once you have a song playing in your music player, you can launch PocketTouch.

Gesture Controls:
    • Double Tap – Pauses and Plays the song
    • Swipe Up and Down – Controls Volume Level
    • Swipe Right – Advances to Next Track
    • Swipe Left – Restarts Song
    • Triple Tap on Status Bar – Allows you to select any song from iPod

Shake Controls:
    • Shake Device – Advances to Random Track

If for some reason the stock control options do not feel natural, the app is extremely customizable. You can get into the app’s Setting by tapping on the “i” icon on the upper right side of the statusbar.

Additional Gesture Options:
    • Reverse T. Swipes – This will change the tracks controls so that swiping right restarts the song and swiping left advances to the next track
    • Reverse Vol Swipes – This will change the volume controls so that swiping up turns the volume down and swiping down turns the volume up
    • Swap x/y Axes – This will reverse the controls so that the track swipe is controlled by swiping up and down and the volume control is controlled by swiping left and right.

Additional Shake Options:
    • Randomize Shaker – If this option is turned off, shaking your device will advance to the next song instead of a random song
    • Vibrate While Shaking – If this option is turned off, your device will not vibrate when shook.

The appearance of the app is also very customizable.

Appearance Options:
    • Show Track Info – If this option is turned on, it will display the song artist, name and album title.
    • Random Transitions – If this option is turned on, the transitions will be random
    • Disable Auto-Lock – If this option is turned on, your device will not auto-lock
    • Volume HUD – If this option is turned on, the stock volume HUD (that is the little volume pop-up you get when you adjust the volume on your device) will display when you adjust the volume level
    • Themes – Here you can choose from 5 pre-designed themes or, if you double-tap on the little gray bar, you can create your own custom theme.

Overall, a very cool application that is perfect for those times when you want to control your music but, you don’t want to have to look at your device to do so. i.e. working out, driving…

PocektTouch hit the App Store today so, check it out!

App Store Description:

PocketTouch, the FIRST alternate music controller for the iPhone or iPod touch has finally arrived on the AppStore.

PocketTouch is a gesture based control scheme for your device’s built in music player that allows you to quickly and easily control your music player via swipes and gestures. PocketTouch allows for a safer driving experience by allowing you to keep your eyes on the road while driving instead of on your iPhone or iPod touch. PocketTouch also comes in handy when working out, for quick easy track changes without breaking your concentration. And, of course, there are simply the times when you don’t want to take your device out of your pocket to change the track.

PocketTouch is a simple and intuitive application to use. While all controls can be customized, the default controls are as follows.

–Swipe left to restart the current track or skip to the previous track and swipe right to advance the current track. Swipe up or down to raise or lower the volume. Alternatively, you may use the built in volume slider to make quick changes to the volume. You can also shake the device to either advance the track or play a random track from your library.

–If any of those gestures doesn’t “feel right” to you, you can change any of the gesture options in the application’s built in settings.

–Triple tapping on the track status bar will present your music to you in a familiar interface. You can now select any song you’d like to listen to.

–Tap, tap, hold your finger on the status bar to see the built in playlist creator to create and play your own playlist!

PocketTouch is simply the most versatile gesture based music controller you can get on the AppStore. But of course, that’s what you can expect form an application that has been refined since 2007!

PocketTouch supports the English, French, German, and Dutch languages.

Try it…I guarantee it will make you smile! I also noticed a two other small visual changes; when you pause a song, the play icon is no longer displayed at the top and when you are in the menu the song and artist are displayed at the bottom of the screen. Though, those could have been there before and I jsut didn’t notice them! Skylar, let me know in the comments if I missed something.

The update to PocketTouch makes only one visual change to the application and that is the addition of a Volume Sensitivity option in the Settings menu. This allows you to choose between three levels of sensitivity; 1, 2 or 3. <strike>1 being the most sensitive and 3 being the least sensitive.</strike> 1 is the least sensitive, 2 has twice the sensitivity and 3 has three times the sensitivity of 1. There were also some bug fixes, enhancements and added language translations. See complete change log below. PocketTouch is avilable through the BigBoss source.

1.4 Change Log:
    • Completely reworked volume controller. This answers a long time request for more constant volume control while eliminating an anti-deafening safety net I had in place in all previous versions. Incidentally, this method uses much less math, resulting for a more snappier feel to the change. And while I was at it, I fixed the “bug” (read:laziness on my part) where you had to lift your finger completely off of the screen before changing swipe direction.
    • I have also improved performance by ~400%, thus prolonging battery life.
    • I have added in Localization support for several languages:
      1. Chinese (Simplified and Traditional)
      2. Dutch
      3. English
      4. French
      5. Italian
      6. Japanese
      7. Polish
      8. Swedish (Skylar emailed me and said this translation was added at the last minute).

I received an email from Skylar, the developer of PocketTouch, giving me some information about the update to PocketTouch. However, lets go over the changes first. The first thing I noticed when opening PocketTouch is that it has a slightly new look, making it even more polished than the previous version. If you select the “i” icon and go into the Settings, you will also see a few new options.

The Settings menu has been broken up into a few more categories making it easier to navigate. Under the Gestures sections, you now have the ability to turn on/off Enable Taps. If you turn the Enable Taps option off, it will disable the tap to pause feature. Which may keep you from accidentally tapping the screen and pausing your music. There is also a new Use Outside of App option under the Shaker category. If you turn on Use Outside of App, you can then use the Shaker to control your music even outside of the application for example, if you are browsing in Safari. The last new features are; Shake with Vibration and Seconds. If you turn on Shake with Vibration, you will get a slight vibration when you shake your iPhone. You can adjust the length of the vibration, from 0.17 to 1.0 sec, by using the slider bar.

Ok, this is where the problem comes in. According to the developer, there is an issue with the Installation process of the new version (1.3) which installs the deamon in the wrong location. There may also be a permissions issue with the app as well. What this means is that you can’t actually use this version of the application. When you try to go into the main play screen, it will just say paused and will not let you use any of the features or play any music. So, if this is an application you like to use, I would hold off on updating until the next version is released. PocketTouch is available through the BigBoss source.

Update: Version 1.3-1 of PocketTouch fixes the issue mentioned above. However, after the update to 1.3-1 the Shake and Shake with Vibration features do not work for me…everything else does.

When playing a song…the Title of the song is now bolder…making it much easier to read and the Now Playing is smaller.

There are quite a few new options with version 1.1 of PocketTouch. I love the new main play screen. You will notice a little play arrow in the upper left corner…this displays whether the song is playing or is paused. It now also displays the time of the song, the volume in percentage and an info button which brings you to the Settings. There are a few new options in the Settings. You are now able to turn off the volume HUD (that is the image that you get then you turn the volume up and down), swap your swipe settings so that the volume change is horizontally and the song change is vertical, and enable a Shake option. When you turn Shaker on…you are then able to shake your iPhone to go to the next song. You can adjust the amount of movement that is required to change the song by increasing/decreasing the Depth. The Time setting controls the shake time…”the higher the number, the more difficult the shake feature will be.” Overall…a very good update! PocketTouch is available through the iPod Touch Fans source. Screenshots below!

PocketTouch is a music controller made by the one and only Skylar. PocketTouch allows you to control your music with simple swipes, the best part is that you can leave it in your pocket while doing it. The biggest complaint with the iPod Touch/iPhone is that there is no external button in order to control your music. PocketTouch solves these problems in a different way. When you start the application, there is a bunch of settings. In order to start the magic, tap the “back” button. A nice swirl affect will take you to a black screen with “Pause” and “Now Playing” at the top. Tap the screen, and your music will start playing. Swipe your finger to the right, and you will skip to the next song, swiping left will take you to your previous song, swiping up will raise the volume, and swiping down will decrease the volume. When changing the volume, a volume meter will appear, this will be familiar for anyone who owns a Mac. In order to reverse all these settings go to the “setting” menu. Hold your finger on the screen for a second or two and it will take you to the settings. The reason Skylar made the screen all black is not because he is lazy, it is because he is brilliant. If there were colors on the screen, it can burn an imprint into the iPod screen if the application is kept on for too long. Having PocketTocuh totally black will prevent that from happening. I love this application, I can now listen to my music without taking my iPod out of my pocket. You can get PocketTouch from the iPod Touch Fans source. Check out the screen shots below.
