If you watch American Idol you already know what I’m talking about. If not, check out the video below. The ringtone is available in Cydia from the modmyi source. Just search for “pants on the ground.” It took a few tries for me to get it to download but I did get it to work.

Another new feature of the 3.1 firmware is the ability to download ringtones wirelessly from your iPhone or iPod touch. Currently there are over 30,000 ringtones available from all 4 of the major music labels. The ringtones are $1.29 (USD) each.

To view this new feature, you will need to go into the iTunes application and then the More option on the lower menu bar. Here you will see a Ringtones option in the menu. Once selected, you have the ability to view Featured, Top Tens (by genres) or Genres of ringtones.

If you see a song from the list that piques your interest, select it. This will bring you to an info page that contains the Artist, Album title, Genre and Release Date of the song. You are also able to preview the ringtone, read reviews about the ringtone and see more media by the artist (which include songs, albums, videos… etc).

You can listen to the ringtone by tapping on the ringtones title. The ringtones range from about 20 second to 30 seconds in length. Each ringtone can be quickly purchased by tapping on the purchase price which will switch to a Buy Now button.

Once you select Buy Now, you are giving the option to assign the ringtone as the default ringtone (that would be your main ringtone), assign it to a specific contact or Done which would just add the ringtone into the list of ringtones available on your iPhone. Once you have made your selection, you will need put in your iTunes password.

Voilà, a new ringtone.

Yes, it’s really free. No kidding. Catch? Only works on Windows… But that’s ok ’cause if you’re on a Mac you can just use GarageBand. Here’s a video of how it works.

The sweet thing about this program is that it runs without installing on your system. So you can just throw it on a thumbdrive and it’s ready to go. It’s pretty simple and exports right to iTunes. Works great!

Ringtones 2.73

I was expecting version 2.73 of Ringtones to fix the SMS error however, it did not. There is one new visual change though…the app now shows that is has checked the Binary, Encoder and Ringtones path and then displays how much Disk Space you have free. A very nice touch I think. It does not automatically bring you to the Ringtones page…you have to tap Ok, Continue at the bottom. Like the previous version, this app still does fine with creating Ringtones but it is a no go for creating SMS tones. The settings get all stuck and the iPhone usually ends up crashing! Ringtones is available through the Skrew source. Below are two screenshots! Oh also, the error at the bottom of main screen has been fixed as well!

I really like this app and when I saw the new features that version 2.71 of Ringtones brought with it…I was like, this app just went from sweet to STINKIN SWEET!! Some of the new features include; setting SMS tones, using the microphone to record your own ringtones and SMS tones, fading in and out the ringtones/SMS tones you have created, converting the tones you create which then gives you a preview of what it will sounds like so you can choose to keep it or redo it and a section that lists all the tones you have created so that you can easily delete them. Everything that has to do with creating ringtones works great, even the new features (fading in/out, the converted preview, creating your own ringtone through the mic….) but anything to do with the SMS tones does not work, it usually ended up crashing all the iPhones I tried it on. I was sad! So, if you want to make ringtones…this app still works for that but hopefully we see an update soon that fixes the SMS bugs! Ringtones is available through the Skrew source. Below are the screenshots.

Note: You will also see a version 2.70 of Ringtones in the Installer…that one will not install…you want version 2.71.

RIngtone is an app that allows you to create ringtones from music on your iPhone. When you open the app you will get an intro screen. From here you will get the main menu with four options; Start Converting, Visit Application Page, Visit Jamendo Page and Donate. When you hit Start Converting it will check for three things…binary check, encoding check and ringtones path check and once it has found all three it will bring you to a list of all the artists on your iPhone. Just select an artist and then a song that you want to make your ringtone out of. From here you will get another menu with three options Quick Conversion, Advanced Conversion and Cancel.

Quick Conversion will just convert the the first 30 seconds of the song into a ringtone. Advanced Conversion allows you to select where in the song you want the ringtone made from, how long you want the ringtone to be, whether you want a preview of the song and if you want it in .wav format or not. Once you have selected everything, tap Convert Now and it will convert it…this step takes a little time so be patient…I think it took at least around 30-45 seconds for me. Once it is finished it will bring you back you your song list….tap Ringtones in the upper left corner (twice) and you will br brought to a list showing all the ringtones you have created…you can delete them from here if you need to. Now, go into your Stock Phone app, select a contact, select Ringtone and you should see the ringtones you created in the list of available ringtones! The only thing I would add to this app is the ability to fade out the end of the ringtone…right not it just ends. Also, this app only works on 1.1.3 and above. Other than that…a seriously sweet app!! Ringtones is available through the Skrew source.

SendSong Update 0.21e

I noticed an update today to SendSong by Erica Sadun so I decided to give it a try. After a couple attempts to make ringtones I restarted my iPhone and it’s works. It’s main purpose is sending songs via email but it includes the option to create ringtones. In the update Erica adds the ability to send songs to other iPhones running SendSong. This update is also expected to improve reliability.

Erica has done another update to SendSong Here are some of the new features and fixes. You can get sendsong from Installer.app or check out her site at ericasadun.com.

- All files copy to the Ringtones folder using their standard 4-letter iTunes labels, both original and spoof files.
- I no longer limit to m4a files. You can copy mp3s as well and spoof them.
- I’ve mimicked all the keys for normal ringtones: GUID, Artist, Album Artist, Album, Genre and Total Time.
- Genre is broken in the on-iPhone music library (a clue?). All songs default to “Soundtracks” in Ringtones.plist.
- I’ve tried making lists of GUIDs that work and do not work but guess what? Sometimes the same GUID works and sometimes it doesn’t, for exactly the same song.
- Be aware that syncing may destroy your Ringtone.plist. A backup gets automatically generated to Ringtone.plist.hold
