Now that all the Holiday craziness is over, we are getting back into the swing of things here at AiS. I hope everyone had a good Christmas. Doug got a $25.00 iTunes Gift Card in his stocking and he got a blue-tooth headset… other than that not a ton of iPhone accessories. 2009 was a great year for the iPhone. I’ve put together some news, apps and hacks from 2009.

Verizon vs. AT&T

Starting with a commercial that attacked AT&T’s 3G coverage, Verizon released a series of commercials that compared the two networks and eventually the DROID vs. the iPhone. AT&T sued Verizon claiming the maps of AT&T’s network only showed 3G coverage which confused customers into thinking there was no coverage in blank areas of the map. AT&T eventually lost the lawsuit and then started in with their own commercials.

blacksn0w & blackra1n – jailbreak & unlock from Geohot

Geohot did it again, creating an jailbreak and unlock for the iPhone 3GS. Of course the cat and mouse game will continue in 2010 but with the addition of hardware encryption on the iPhone 3GS and Apple’s authorization process of each firmware before you can restore your iPhone, jailbreaking has become more difficult to develop.

Facebook iPhone App Developer Quits

The developer for the Facebook iPhone app announced he would no longer work on the iPhone app after getting fed up with Apple’s App Store process. Others at Facebook are still working on the app but this was a big PR blow to Apple’s app approval process.

Google Android

Google has had the Android software out for a while but this year many more phones were released with the software including the DROID from Verizon. Even more phones are scheduled to be released in 2010, some with 1GHz prosessors, OLED screens and other features missing from the iPhone. The official “Google Phone” is also expected to be released in the first quarter of 2010.

Happy Thanksgiving from everyone here at AppleiPhoneSchool.com! We hope you get to spend the day relaxing and spending time with your family (and maybe watching a little football!). Doug and I traveled all last night with the boys to spend Thanksgiving with our families today. We totally used our iPhones to stay entertained during the drive! Doug used GPSTracker to embed our current location on his facebook and our personal website as we drove (and insisted on showing it to me every hour or so!) He did have to use Backgrounder to keep it running in the background.

P.S. Any old school jailbreaks remember what application the icon I used for this post is from??

Forums Repaired

We’ve been having issues not being able to add new posts to our forum. Viewers could comment on others, but not create a new post. I’ve discovered it was an update to MySQL on our server and I had to run a little repair on the database for the forum. To make a long story short, it’s fixed! Thanks to those who let me know!

AiS Technical Difficulties

Hey guys, you may have noticed that articles keep appearing, disappearing and reappearing from our website today. You are not going crazy (though, I thought I was for a while)… we are having some technical difficulties. We will get things back to normal as soon as possible. Doug does all that website building/fixing stuff so it’s up to him to fix it!

PS. For those of you wondering (Nate and Alan) why we would take a vacation in Wisconsin (we were on vacation last week)… it is because there is this ten mile stretch of nothing but apple trees and orchards that I love to go to! We go in the fall because the drive is absolutely beautiful and the orchards are at their prime. We did get snowed on this year which was crazy. Below is a pic (before it all melted). The only bad part about taking a vacation in the middle of nowhere is sketchy internet… it was terrible!

AiS News – Fixed Email Subscription

Yesterday, Doug received a tweet saying that our AppleiPhoneSchool email subscription was not working so he took a look at it and indeed it was not working. However, he fixed it last night and it is now working properly. We apologize to those of you who tried to sign up for our emails and were unable to. You can sign up to receive AppleiPhoneSchool’s emails using the sign-up on the right side bar of the website.

AppleiPhoneSchool Mobile Site Update

Today, Doug updated AppleiPhoneSchool’s mobile site. The update adds some new features such as; easier access to tags and categories, ability to email, tweet or share posts, ability to change the font size and we have added a few more links to the drop down menu. But, best of all, the posts no longer jump back to the top when it’s finish loading… YAY! Check out the screenshots below.

iPhone Epic Fail

Yesterday, I did the one thing that every iPhone and iPod touch user is convinced will never happen to them… I shattered my iPhone. Yep, my iPhone finally took that fatal fall. To be honest, I have dropped my iPhone on multiple occasions so, when it took a dive yesterday, I wasn’t too concerned. I picked it up, brushed it off and almost put it in my purse without looking at it. For some reason, I took a quick glance and to my horror the lower forth of my iPhone was completely shattered!

It took a second for the full implications of what had just happened to set in. After the initial shock wore off, sadness seeped in. My beautiful, smooth iPhone was now cracked and jagged. It looked awful!

After further examination, it seemed as though it must have fallen straight down onto the bottom right corner (on cement)… not exactly that ideal place for your iPhone to land. And being that I’m a case hater, my naked iPhone did not withstand the impact well.

When we got home Doug took my precious iPhone, removed the SIM and traded it for one of our test iPhones. So, although I have a “new” iPhone (really it’s Doug’s old 3G), I still miss the one I had invested so much time and energy into. So sad.

I told Doug that it might just be time to upgrade to an iPhone 3GS!

Moral of the Story… invest in a case.
