This mod changes the colors of your text bubbles. There are three separate installations available for three different color combinations. They are Blue and Lavender, Pink and Lavender & Turquoise and Lavender. It would be great if there were a few more color combinations. They seem to only work on the iPhone 4 with it’s retina display which makes total sense since the name of the mod is SMS Retina Bubbles. We tried it on an iPhone 3GS and it didn’t work.

This app reminds me of the app called SpringDial where you could add an icon for any contact to your home screen to quickly dial them. That app is no longer in Cydia so here’s another option and it has even more features.

Once CallMe is installed, just open the app and pick a contact you want to reach straight from your home screen by tapping the plus sign in the top right. Once you select who you want to contact, pick the number you want to reach them at. Next pick if you want to call them or text them and pick what text you want to show under the icon. Close the app and your iPhone will respring. You’re all set!

The features of this app are great. You’ll want to make sure the picture you have for your contact really fills the screen when you add the image through your contacts app. This makes the icon look best. I also love features like a little SMS icon added to the icon to show the icon links to texting instead of calling. There’s also many options for naming the icon. The more customization, the better in my opinion. The app does respring in a weird way once closed. It seems it takes longer than usual. Overall it’s a very nice app for being free and just being upgraded for 4.1. Once set up, it works great!

TIP: I use Facebook mobile in Safari to save pictures of my friends and I use these to add the photo to my contact for them.

It’s time for anther QuickTip! It has been a while since I have wrote a QuickTip (a very simple tip about the iPhone or iPod Touch) and I thought I better get back to it. I was actually reminded of this quicktip while we were on vacation last week.

QuickTip: To change the sound your iPhone makes when receiving a new text message, you can go into the stock Settings application then the Sounds option and then the New Text Message option. Here you will see seven options in which you can choose from; None, Tri-tone, Chime, Glass, Horn, Bell and Electronic (all iPhones come stock with the Tri-tone sound enabled). You can tap on the name of a sound to get a quick demo of it. Once you select a sound, it will make that sound every time you receive a new text message.

I was reminded of how helpful it can be to change your SMS sound while on vacation last week. Doug and I (and the boys) went on vacation with Doug’s grandparents… we all have iPhones and whenever anyone received a text message we all went searching for our phones to see who received it. It would have been much easier if we all would have changed our SMS sounds (actually Doug did end up changing his later).

Click HERE to see all the QuickTips. Random QuickTips are also displayed on the ride side bar of AppleiPhoneSchoo.com. Remember if you would like to submit a quick tip just email QuickTip@appleiphoneschool.com.

WIT Software announces an MMS application for iPhone
Coimbra, February 11th, 2009 – WIT Software, a company that develops software products for Mobile Operators and the Mobile Internet, has just released a fully interoperable MMS application for the Apple iPhone.

WIT Software took the lead and recognized the demand in the market for an iPhone MMS application. With this application users of the iPhone will be able to send and receive multimedia messages, including images and video clips. Up until now they were limited to text messaging (SMS) and E-mail.

This MMS application for the iPhone follows all the industry standards, enables rich communication with any other phone and it is easy to integrate within the Mobile Operator network. The application is available as a white label product and is targeted for licensing to Mobile Operators worldwide.

After several months of development followed by a friendly-user trial, this iPhone application was certified by Apple Inc. and is now available for download at the iTunes Apple Store from Portugal. The development cycle and the user-trial were done in close cooperation with Vodafone Portugal, becoming the first Mobile Operator in the world to launch this MMS application.

Luis Silva, WIT Software CEO, stated that “This MMS application brings the iPhone up to speed on mobile messaging features, allowing clients to make use of the iPhone camera and image gallery to express their feelings. This iPhone application will be important for Mobile Operators that want to create a new revenue stream with MMS messaging.”

About WIT Software WIT Software is a company that develops software products for Mobile Operators and the Mobile Internet. The company specializes mainly in the convergence of communications between the mobile, the PC and the Internet. It looks pretty sweet. If you have a slingbox you can then watch live T.V. on your iPhone over the internet or cellular for $30. Ouch! Here’s the a video demo:

As most everyone knows, one of the biggest downfalls of the iPhone is the missing picture messaging. I was reading through our forum and zachdrago had written how to send MMS or picture messages to AT&T users. I have done this before with Verizon but I thought it would be kewl to list all the services that allow for this feature. Basically the way it works is you put the person’s phone number before whatever domain name that company uses for picture or text messaging.

zachdrago’s instructions:

1) choose the picture you want to send, and hit “email photo.” 2) in the “to:” field type the person’s cell phone number followed by @mms.att.net. now send, it’s that simple. EX: 5552345678@mms.att.net

I’ll get a list started and as you let me know in the comments, I’ll add it to the list. Thanks zachdrago! Here’s the ones I know:

AT&T: @mms.att.net
Verizon: @vzwpix.com
T-Mobile: @tmomail.com & @tmomail.net
Sprint: @messaging.sprintpcs.com
Cingular: @mms.mycingular.com
Alltel: @message.alltel.com
Boost Mobile: @myboostmobile.com
Einstein PCS: @einsteinmms.com
US Cellular: @mms.uscc.net
Virgin Mobile: @vmobl.com

owen gives a tip in the comments below: an easier way. If in north America send to recipient@teleflip.com (5552345788@teleflip.com) teleflip will forward to correct carrier.

Thanks owen!
