Version 1.1 of SlingPlayer Mobile was just approved by Apple and is now available in the App Store. the update does contain some new features (see list below) but still does not allow the app to work on 3G. The developers have submitted a version of the app that does allow it to work on 3G however, they have not heard back from Apple on that version of the app yet. When you first launch the app there are nice graphics showing recent scores. Scrolling up and down lets you browse through the games.

If a game is currently playing you can just tap it and watch it live! Now here’s when the app gets AMAZING! You can check the stats right from the video player. You can also see the current games playing and their scores. Just tap them to switch back and forth through the games. Wow! This is a very nice app. Resolution isn’t bad and as usual with sports, the entire screen is moving fast causing pixelation.

The Brackets tab lets you swipe around the bracket and shows up to date info. For games not yet played, the date and time scheduled for the game is displayed. Tapping on games already played gives you the option to view a recap.

Next, the Scoreboard tab is just that, a simple list of played games and their scores. Tapping on them brings you to a text recap of the game.

Finally, the Highlights tab lists some of the top headlines from recent games.

The downfalls to this app is it expires on April 6th, 2009 at the end of the tournament and video only works on wifi, but if you’re a NCAA fan, this app is worth it.

SoccerGuide is going to be a soccer guide application featuring two soccer leagues; German league and Premier League. The application is due to be released in Cydia very soon. It comes from the developers of TourDeFrance and Formula1 Guide from firmware 1.1.x. The app will be free via Cydia and they say they might also update the application to add additional league. Below are a few preview screenshots.

I’ve been look and reviewing all kinds of apps for the 2008 Olympics. From web apps to App Store apps and I’ve finnaly found the winner! NBC has their own mobile version of their Olympics web page. It’s built for any mobile device but it works great on the iPhone & iPod Touch. The best feature of all is the video. Again, it works great on the iPhone & iPod Touch and it’s very up to date. There are TONS of features including: medal count, results, schedules, tv & online listings, video, photos, and a lot more. You can even sign up for SMS alerts for all sorts of things. I think the screenshots will tell a lot.

Beijing 2008 Medal Tracker is as simple as the title suggests. It tracks the top 5 couries in Olympic medals. You can also set your favorite team to track at the bottom. The biggest downfall of this app is the cost. At $1.99, this app is only good for 14 days, then the Olympics are over. I vote pass on this one and check my earlier review of iOlympics the web app or try SportsTap from the App Store.

Last night the opening events for the 2008 Olympics was amazing! It got me thinking that there had to be some apps out there for the iPhone that would update you on Olympic news, scores and schedules. The first one I’ve found, and best so far, is a web app called iOlympics. It first opens up with a countdown as to how many days are left of the Olympic Games. Next there are 7 choices: News, Today’s Events, Event Schedule, TV Viewing Schedule, Medal Tracker, Sports and Countries.

News covers Olympic news from NBC, BBC, Yahoo, and USA Today. There is also a Most Popular News, Team USA News and a Special Features section.

Today’s Events gives you a break down of all events for the current day. It shows the day and time, event category, specific event, and which match, game, race, etc.

Next is the Event Schedule which you can sort by date or sport. This way if you want to watch your team’s soccer match you don’t have to sort through all the dates. Then once you know the date and time you can go to the next main menu option, TV Schedule. This shows a list of dates, times and TV networks covering the event.

The next option is Medal Tracker. This one I’m not so sure about because I know there is already news out about the medal counts but so far the list on iOlympics is empty. This info may be entered manually, but I’m not sure.

Finally there is Sports and Countries menu options. In Sports, you can breakdown the sport you want and see just that sports news and event schedule. Countries option just takes you to a breakdown of news for that country.

Overall a great app that is both free and full of info. Even though all text based this app is not over complicated and does the job of updating you on Olympic news, scores and schedule. I recommend this web app!

SportsTap is an application that gives you up-to-date scores and stats for multiple sports. When you open the application, you will get the main screen where you can choose from the following sports; MLB, NFL, NBA, NHL, NCAA, NASCAR, F1, IndyCar, AFL, PGA, Tennis, MLS, Premier and UEFA. There is also a lower menu bar with the options; Feedback which will open a contact form right in the application, FAQ which will open a FAQ page right in the application and Settings. In the Settings option you have the ability to turn on/off Save Last Viewed Page and Disable iPhone Sleep. If you turn on Save Last Viewed Page, then next time you open the application, it will automatically open to the last page you were on before quitting the application. I think this is a great feature and a major time saver when you are trying to quickly see if the score has changed. If you turn on the Disable iPhone Sleep option, you can leave the application open and your iPhone will not auto-lock or go into sleep mode. This will obviously drain your battery much faster but, it will leave the application open so that you can constantly check the score of a game.

When you select one of the sports on the main menu, you will be given a list of current score information. For example, if you select Nascar, you will get a list of the all previous races and the next race. Here you will see the Date, Time, Title, Track and Place of the race. If you select a previous race you will get even more information about the race such as, the order of finish, driver name, number of laps they completed, number of laps the driver led and how much they won. You can get back to the race list by scrolling down and selecting the NASCAR option. When you are back on the race list screen you can scroll down and there is another option title Standing. It will give you the overall standing for each driver, their total points, how many points they are behind and how much money they have won so far. To get back to the main sports screen, scroll down and select Home.

Not all of the sports have information. If the sport is not in season (such as the NFL), when you select the icon you will get a screen saying when information will be available for that sport. The best feature of this application is that if there is a match/game/race (I think I got them all) is currently in progress you can select it and the score information will automatically update every minute! Personally, I think this application is user-friendly and useful. The only issue I have with it is that there are Google ads at the top of each page (though, it is a free application…what do you expect) and that it could end up distracting quite a few of you during meetings!!!

The Teams and Drivers option will give you a list of all the Teams. When you select a team, you will see the number, name and nationality of each driver in the team. The Race Calendar option will display a list of the Place, Date and Number of the races…starting with today’s race all the way through race 21 on July 27th. The Race Info option will bring you to a list of all 21 races. When you select a race, you are give the distance of the race and a map showing you the terain of the race (the map is not in English). The Race Map option brings up a map of the entire Tour de France. I do wish that you could zoom in on the map…it is hard to see any specifics when it is zoomed so far out. The Last Ten “Winners” option is a list of the winners of the Tour de France from 2007-1997. The Credits option will give you more information about the application and the Select Your Language option will bring you back to the screen in which you can select from a list of languages. This application functions well and has a lot of good information. You can get le Tour de France via the iSpazio Source.

Once you have selected your language, you will come to another menu with the options; News (WiFi/Edge), Drivers, Teams, Results. Race Calendar, Constructor Rating, Drivers Rating, Credits and Select Your Language. The News options will give you up-to-date news via an RRS feed from itv-f1.com or Planetf1.com. You can be on WiFi or Edge to view the News and when you select an article, it will open it right in the application. If you select the drivers options, you will get a menu of all the different type of drivers for example. Ferrari Drivers, Renault Drivers, Toyota Drivers….ect. If you select one of the types of Drivers, you will get a list of all the drivers for that car and information about each of the drivers. The information includes a picture of the driver, their place of birth, their Birthday, their Age, their Nationality, their home County, their Height, their weight and their car number.

If you select the Teams option, you will get a list of all the possible teams. Once you select a team you will get information about it including; Founding Year, Team Leader, Technical Director, Director of Aerodynamics, Engineengineer and the Drivers. The Results option will give you a list of Prix’s and when you select one, will give you the results for the Prix. The race Calendar option will bring you to a page that contains a list of the Races, who won and the date of the race. It includes completed and up-coming races. The Constructions rating will give you a list of what each Team is rated; including their total points and wins. The Drivers Rating will do that smae for the drivers, it displays the driver’s name, team and total points. The Credit options give more info on who helped develop the application and the Select Your Language option will bring you back to the main menu.
