It’s time for anther QuickTip! It has been a while since I have wrote a QuickTip (a very simple tip about the iPhone or iPod Touch) and I thought I better get back to it. I was actually reminded of this quicktip while we were on vacation last week.

QuickTip: To change the sound your iPhone makes when receiving a new text message, you can go into the stock Settings application then the Sounds option and then the New Text Message option. Here you will see seven options in which you can choose from; None, Tri-tone, Chime, Glass, Horn, Bell and Electronic (all iPhones come stock with the Tri-tone sound enabled). You can tap on the name of a sound to get a quick demo of it. Once you select a sound, it will make that sound every time you receive a new text message.

I was reminded of how helpful it can be to change your SMS sound while on vacation last week. Doug and I (and the boys) went on vacation with Doug’s grandparents… we all have iPhones and whenever anyone received a text message we all went searching for our phones to see who received it. It would have been much easier if we all would have changed our SMS sounds (actually Doug did end up changing his later).

Click HERE to see all the QuickTips. Random QuickTips are also displayed on the ride side bar of AppleiPhoneSchoo.com. Remember if you would like to submit a quick tip just email QuickTip@appleiphoneschool.com.

One of the biggest changes to firmware 3.0 is the app name change from “Text” to “Messages”. The icon was also changed, now with a blank chat bubble where before it had the letters SMS. Of course SMS stands for Short Message Service, which is only texting, but now Messages send pictures, contacts & current location. The icon, along with a few others like the Phone and iPod icons, have a new style shading to them. See the icon at the beginning of this post to see what I mean.

AT&T: @mms.att.net
Verizon: @vzwpix.com
T-Mobile: @tmomail.com & @tmomail.net
Sprint: @messaging.sprintpcs.com
Cingular: @mms.mycingular.com
Alltel: @message.alltel.com
Boost Mobile: @myboostmobile.com
Einstein PCS: @einsteinmms.com
US Cellular: @mms.uscc.net
Virgin Mobile: @vmobl.com

owen gives a tip in the comments below: an easier way. If in north America send to recipient@teleflip.com (5552345788@teleflip.com) teleflip will forward to correct carrier.

Thanks owen!

The text application on the iPhone lets you send SMS text messages to other cell phones. The design looks like two cartoon like chat bubbles talking back and forth. All past texts are always visible by scrolling up. I feel this looks is designed to feel more like chatting than texting which will increase text messages and make AT&T more money. Some downfalls to the text feature are no MMS texting. So no picture or video texting, and also no texting to a group. And you can’t receive picture texts either. You have to go to viewmymessage.com and enter a username and password that comes with the text to see the text. Links however are clickable within the text and will open right into Safari.
