Prowl – Growl Notifications Pushed to Your iPhone

Available In: App Store       Price: $2.99

ProwlThere is this sweet thing called Growl and if you don’t what it is, you can check out their website at growl.info/about. It is originally developed for the Mac but there is also a PC version out now too. What it does is combine all of your notifications from your computer into one notification system. You can have it text you the notification, show a pop up alert, speak the alert, etc. With the iPhone app Prowl you can have the notifications push to your iPhone. There are a lot of features like choosing which apps to push to the iPhone and what sound it makes when you get the alert. The app even shows you a list of the recent alerts.

You’ll need to install Growl on your computer first if you don’t already have it. Then you’ll have to install the Prowl plug-in on your computer if you’re on a Mac. The PC version of Growl has Prowl built in. Once you have both installed on your computer, you’ll need to set up an account with Prowl. You can do this from the iPhone app or their website. Weather Machine – Feature-Filled Weather App

Available In: App Store       Price: $3.99

Weather Machine Weather Machine is a very detailed and information loaded weather application. Honestly, this app might have too many features…if that is possible! I’m going to explain a few features of the app and then I will let you watch the demo video so that you can get the full feel of the app.

When the app opens, it will ask to find your current location. After it did this the first time, I actually shut this feature off in the Settings so that it didn’t ask every time I open the app…it is slow and it is not extrememly accurate.

Once the app is open, you will see the current weather conditions including the current temperature, feels like temperature, weather conditions, pressure, humidity, wind direction and wind speed. It you double-tap on the Current Weather screen, it will enlarge the screen and you will get the current visibility and dew point. If you tap on the arrows at the bottom of the current weather screen, it will scroll through surrounding cities. If you rotate the device into landscape mode, you will get a animated Satellite map of the current conditions, a current conditions map, a forecast map and an animated doppler radar map. Dictionary – Translation Dictionary

Available In: Cydia       Price: 3 Day Trial then ?

Dictionary Judging by the title of the application, I figured this application would be a dictionary for your iPhone or iPod Touch. You know, look up words and find their definitions. Well, upon installing and reviewing the app…I found that it is actually a translation dictionary.

Dictionary will come with a few translation dictionaries already installed. If you select the settings icon in the lower left corner, you can delete those dictionaries and choose the ones that suit you best. In the Settings you can choose the size of the font, edit the list of dictionaries that are installed and download new dictionaries. The dictionaries that are available for download are in categories based on the language you would like to translate from. The languages include; Danish, English, Bulgarian, French, German, Hungarian and Russian. Once you choose the language you would like to translated from (say English) you will then get a list of of languages to translate to. Encrypto – Hide Photos in Your Camera Roll

Available In: App Store       Price: $1.99

Encrypto Encrypto is an application that allows you to hide images that are in your Camera Roll. When you open Encrypto, you will need to choose a passkey. You will want to remember your passkey because the next time you open the app, you will have to enter it.

Once in the application, you have three options on the lower menu bar; the main page, the help page and the import page. On the main page you will see all the photos from your Camera Roll. It automatically pulls in all your photos however, it will not pull in any screenshots that are in your Camera Roll. I personally like that it only pulls in photos and not screenshots. Each photo has a image of a lock on it. If you tap on the lock, it will Encrypt the photo. [Read more…]

Paris “At a Glance” – Everything You Need To Know About Paris

Available In: App Store       Price: $5.99

Paris So when I got Paris “At a Glance” I kinda just figured Paris was just part of the title and that you could put in any city you wanted to and it would bring up points of interest for that area. Yeah, not so much. This app is pretty much everything you could possibly want to know about Paris, France. However, this is not necessarily a bad thing. Paris gives you the ability to search pretty much any point of interest in and around Paris. This includes History and Culture, Things to see, Food, Shopping, Lodging, and Nightlife. Once you select a category it brings up a list of interesting places or restaurants or whatever for you to browse through and it also provides ratings out of 3 stars so you know what other people think about that particular attraction. You can also add certain places to a favorites list as you plan your trip. [Read more…]

Air Sharing Pro – File Storage Solution and Document Viewer

Available In: App Store       Price: $4.99

Air Sharing Pro Upon browsing the App Store one day, I remember stumbling upon Air Sharing, a file storage solution and document viewer for the iPhone. Since it was being offered for free as a promotion, I downloaded it, but didn’t really explore the program until a few weeks later. Since that time, I have reviewed two other similar programs for AppleiPhoneSchool: iDownload and ReaddleDocs. What follows below is a pre-release review of Air Sharing Pro, the major update to the original Air Sharing application. While the application has a plethora of options and features, I will choose to focus on ones that are included in the update and ones that appealed directly to me. [Read more…]

qTweeter Update – SBSettings Comptability and Add Images to Tweets

Available In: Cydia       Price: Free Trial then Donation

qTweeter I did a review of qTweeter, an application that allows you to update your Twitter and/or Facebook status from any application, when it was first released in Cydia. At the time, I found two downfalls with the app…there was no ability to tweet images using qTweeter and every time you launched it, it also launched SBSettings. Well, two updates later, I think we are good to go!

After updating the app, I am able to launch it without launching SBSettings at the same time. The launch motion for qTwetter is still the same, swiping from the status bar down your screen, however it no longer launches SBSettings when you do this. A wonderful improvement! [Read more…]

9-Toolbox – 9 Useful Tools in One Application

Available In: App Store       Price: $4.99 (Free for limited time)

9-Toolbox I have had 9-Toolbox on my iPhone for quite some time now and I have to admit that, at first, I was slightly overwhelmed by the application. 9-Toolbox really is nine applications rolled into one. Because of the extensiveness of the app…I will just give you a brief description about each of the nine tools that are available in the app which include; Currency, Date Calc, Days Until, Holidays, Inclinometer, Loan, My Girl’s Day, Tip Calc and Units.

9toolbox 9toolbox1

iBirthdays – Keep Track of Your Contacts’ Birthdays

Available In: Cydia       Price: Free & $6.99

iBirthday iBirthdays is an application that allows you to nicely keep track of upcoming Birthdays. I have reviewed a few Birthday applications available since the 2.x firmware (QuickBirthday and Birthday Reminder). Like most Birthday applications, the Birthdays are pulled from your Contact List. So, in order for this app to work, you have to have Birthdays assigned to your Contacts (see info below on how to do so).

When you open iBirthdays (which should not be confused for iBirthday), you get a list of your upcoming Birthdays. The list displays the contact’s Photo, Name, Birthday Date, how old they are going to be and how many months/days until their Birthday. There is also a lower menu bar in which you can view the list by All by Date (this displays the Birthdays for all your contacts starting in January and going to December), All by Name (this displays the Birthdays for all your contacts in alphabetical order by the contact’s name) and Setting. Nam’s Remote – Allround Remote Control

Available In: App Store       Price: $2.99

Nam's RemoteOne of the first apps I downloaded was Apple’s very own Remote app, and though I don’t use it very much, I was definitely impressed with its ease of use and functionality. It was cool to be able to control my iTunes library on my home computer with my phone. With the success of the Remote app, I wondered what else I could control with my iPhone: my T.V, my lights, or my thermostat? With Nam’s Remote, I don’t get to do any of these things, but I do get access to a few interesting features.

Overview
Nam’s Remote was pretty easy to set up. You will need to download a separate application for the computer that you intend to control. After adjusting the settings on this app, you then need to establish a connection to your iPhone/iPod. This involves knowing the IP address, but the program helps you find it with ease. Once connected, you then have access to a wide range of functions ranging from using your iPhone as a trackpad (my personal favorite) to using it as a keyboard or controlling other programs on your computer such as PowerPoint and Windows Media Player. Birthday Reminder – Receive Email Reminders For Upcoming Birthdays

Available In: App Store       Price: $1.99

Birthday Reminder I have been looking for a good Birthday reminder application for a while now…before firmware 2.x I had a Birthday reminder application that I used titlediBirthday. However, the app was not updated for the 2.x firmware and I still haven’t found an app that I like. Well today, I received an email about Birthday Reminder. It not only lists all your upcoming Birthdays but, it also allows you to receive an email reminder about them.

When you open the app, you will see a list of all your contact’s Birthdays. For each contact in the list, it displays the person’s name, the month and day of their Birthday, how old they will be and how many months it is until their next Birthday. If you select one of the contacts on the list, not only are you are given a little more information about them but, you can also open the contact in AddressBook and edit contact information right in the Birthday Reminder Application! You can also call or email the them once you select the Open in AddressBook option as well. [Read more…]

qTweeter – Update Twitter and/or Facebook Status From Any Application

Available In: Cydia       Price: Free Trial then Donation

qTweeter Last night, just before going to bed, I checked Cydia like I always do. I was surprised to see that Ste Packaging had released an app (it has been a while since I have seen one from them). This instantly made me a little curious about the application so, I decided to check it out. At first I was like, “Yeah, that is just what I need…another Twitter application!” But, after I installed and tested the app…it realized this was like no other Twitter application I had!

qTweeter allows you to update your Twitter and Facebook from any application. How that app works is, once installed, you can slide your finger from your status bar down the page. This brings up a nicely designed little user interface. The first time you launch the app (swipe from the status bar down) you will get a Welcome to qTweeter page. Here you will want to select the Start Using qTweeter option. [Read more…]
