Some of you might remember the app vWallpaper, an application that enables video wallpapers. I honestly haven’t written about the app is quite some time however, people are wondering if it has been updated for the 3.0 firmware yet. A few days ago, the developer released a beta version of both SkrewCommon (a code app that is needed in order to run vWallpaper) and vWallpaper. It is a manually install and there are a few bugs still such as; the device will not go into sleep mode and sometimes the video wallpaper will not restart after closing an application. Well, it seems that while I was traveling, we finally got one of the apps that many of you have been waiting for…vWallpaper/vRingtones. I gave the app a try and it seems to work great! One new feature in the vWallpaper section is that you can now add a picture mask to your wallpaper. The video wallpaper will then show behind the picture mask. Another feature that I really like is the ability to preview the wallpapers and picture masks before setting them. The only thing it needs now is the ablity to view a vWallpaper before you download it. That would be nice!

The vRingtones part of the application works well too. For some reason these apps seem to run a lot smoother now. When I had them on version 1.1.4 and below they were always a little sketchy but, they seem to work great on firmware 2.0 and above.


Note: Remember that in order to use vWallpaper, you first need to install SkrewCommon.

I’m going through the forum, which I would love to have more time for, and I found this thread stated by DJContagious. It explains how to take a YouTube Video and make it into a video ringtone. How sweet is that! Great job DJContagious!

Requirements:
iPhone (DUH!) FW 1.1.4
MxTube
MobileFinder
vWallpaper
Wi-Fi (not necessarily a requirement, but saves time)

Step 1. Open MxTube, find a video you would like as your ringtone, and download (I would recommend the ” High quality” option, it would look more cut up).

Step 2. Once the video is done downloading, quit MxTube and open Finder.

Step 3. Navigate to. /var/mobile/Media/MxTube and spot the video you downloaded (this might be a bit challenging if you have multiple videos, just look In the little pictures and see which one could be from your video.).

Step 4. Once you find you video, locate the clone of it (by this I mean the .mp4 file that matches the name of the .THM picture of the video you just downloaded.

Step 5. Press “File” and then “Move”.

Step 6. Now navigate to /var/mobile/Media/Skrew/vRingtones

Step 7. Once there, press “Paste” at the bottom left button panel.

Step 8. Once it pastes there, exit Finder and reboot your phone.

Step 9. Open vWallpaper, and select Video Ringtones, then Select Videos, and select the vid u just downloaded. Then reboot.

Done! Now ask someone to call you, and you will see a YouTube video as your ringer!

It seems for me, I didn’t need to move the files using finder. vWallpaper found them on it’s own! That makes it much easier. Let me know how it works for you.

Another very nice new feature is when you select a video to assign it to a contact or as the global video, you will get to see a preview of the video. An excellent feature! The update also allows you to use videos from MxTube as a video ringtone. The only feature I would love to see now is the ability to view the videos before I download them. That way I do not have to download them and then delete them…it would save a ton of time. You can get both vWallpaper and SkrewCommon through the Skrew source.

VideosTone

3. Can select only a video…whatever audio is with that video is what is used as the ringtone

5. Shows up as an application on iPhone’s SpringBoard
6. Free
7. Available through Skrew source

Let me know in the comments which application you prefer…I really think it comes down to personal preference.

There is one default video ringtone already in the Select Videos option, you can add more videos by downloading them from the Download Videos section. As of now, there are eight videos available to download from the Download Videos section. After you have selected a video from the Select Video section, you will want to enable videoringtones and then restart your SpringBoard. The video ringtone that you select will be automatically added as the ringtone for all incoming calls. The only thing that drives me crazy about this application is that there is no back button. The Home button brings you all the way out to the main menu when I only want to go back one menu!! Other than that, the application worked good. I did have to turn off my VideosTone ringtones in order to get the vWallpaper Video Ringtone to work. You can get both SkrewCommon and vWallpaper through the Skrew source.

Apple iPhone School has created a repo that you can add to vWallpapers that will contain all the vwallpapers from vWallpapers.com. Right now, the repo has three wallpapers in it; Green Tunnel, Mario Brothers and Red and Blue Clouds (see videos below). The files are titled AIS_file name, that way you are able to easily distinguish between our vWallpapers and other vWallpapers. We will be adding quite a few more in the near future. Note: This is not an installer repo, this repo will only work in the vWallpapers application. Do not try to add it as a source in Installer!

Note: The Mario vWallpaper wouldn’t upload correctly so we had to use YouTube. The preview is stretched but the original file is the correct resolution so it will look normal when you add it to your iPhone.
