I noticed a pretty cool mod today in Cydia called Un-Unlockable through the ModMyi source. What the mod does is make your “Slide to Unlock” transparent. This means that it will not show up on your lock screen. Instead, you still just see your wallpaper on your lock screen. The “Slide to Unlock” is still there and you still have to slide to unlock your iPhone…you just cannot see it. The first time I locked my iPhone after installing this mod, I panicked a little…I was like, crap it’s gone now what do I do!! But, like anyone who has had an iPhone for a while and uses it everyday, my finger knew exactly where to slide even without having the “Slide to Unlock” prompt. Though, it would definitely keep people out of your iPhone who do not know how to use one!!

Once you have installed Un-Unlockable, it will be added to WinterBoard (there will not be an icon on your dock). You can then go into WinterBoard and check Un-Unlockable. Then, lock your iPhone and tada! a transparent “Slide to Unlock.” After you get over the immediate panic of not having a slide to unlock…it is actually a pretty cool mod!

Note: I couldn’t get a screenshot of the lock screen. If anyone knows of any good screenshot apps for 2.x firmware let me know (besides the built-in screenshot ability).

BigBoss has written a nice article that gives a lot of 2.0/2.0.1 troubleshooting hints and tips. Below is a snippet of the article.

Many comments on various issues in 2.0 or 2.0.1 upgrades. Many questions have been answered numerous times. I am adding a summary of a lot of the problems and solutions in this post for reference. I can also update it over time if we need it.

Problem: Mail App crashes after my update.
Solution: This is caused by the sync of the backup from iTunes. The permissions on the mail folder are incorrect (it’s owned by root). The easiest fix is to run bossprefs, click more, and click “fix user dir permissions”. You may need to reboot.

Problem: I have AT&T or a contract carrier. I jailbroke with your guide and now I have no service.
Solution: You activated and you shouldn’t have. iTunes will activate for you but because you clicked the activate button, iTunes did not get to activate. Now your account is not validated. You need to redo the steps and not check activation on your image.

Problem: I have an unlocked 2g phone. I updated to 2.0. Now I get incorrect SIM.
Solution: You did not activate and unlock. Redo the steps and make sure you activate and unlock. In winpwn, this is “activate” and configure boot neuter on the last tab. (See my guide). On osx, this is saying “I am not legit” when asked in pwnage.

Problem: Winpwn IPSW will not complete. It just errors out.
Solution: This one is caused because the size of the image is larger than the partition space. Generally resizing the partition to 550mb solves it.

I finally had a chance to sit down and take a look at the new Customize for firmware 2.0. <strike>At this time, it is still not available via Cydia and the only way to get it on your iPhone or iPod Touch is to SSH it in</strike> Customize is now available via Cydia. When I SSH’d Customize onto my iPhone, I had to go in and change the permissions of all the folders/files inside the Customize.app folder to 0755. Before I change the permissions the app just opened and closed (I tried to open it quite a few times before I changed the permissions).

So, once I changed the permissions, I was able to open Customize. From there I downloaded a few files and some themes. However, I could not get anything to actually work. If I went into Customize Images/Sounds and tried to set anything (Dock, Battery, Badge, Bars, Edge….) I would get an error saying, “Copy Result Encountered an error copying the files.” Also, if I tried to change something like the System Strings (which doesn’t require a download) I would get an error that said, “Save Result Failed to save strings file.” After some research on the Customize Forum I found that SpicyChicken suggested running this code:

chmod +s /Applications/Customize.app/Customize_

I ran the code, resprang my SpringBoard and went back into Customize. This time everything worked! I was able to change the dock, edge and wifi bars, the badge, application icons, system strings…etc. So, run that command and you should be fine. The actual application itself has not changed, it looks and functions the same as in the previous version. I am soooooo happy to have the ability to customize my 2.0 iPhone! I’m very excited! Now I just have to remember everything that I had changed before.

You can get Customize 2.1.1 HERE.

Update: Customize is now available via Cydia!

Every once and a while we still get random emails asking us what ever happened to MxTube 2.0, a YouTube video downloader. Well, ever since we first learned that the developer of MxTube was working on MxTube 2.0, I have been keeping a close eye on his blog and it seems he is finishing up the development of MxTube 2.0 and we should see it in the next few days!

Below is some info about MxTube 2.0 via the developer. Check out our post on MxTube for more info about the app.

In the last status update the background downloader was communicating with MxTube but I hadn’t implemented the actual downloading. Turns out due to some NSRunLoop problems that I didn’t figure out until it was too late, NSURLDownload and NSURLConnection were not working. After having a friend (banana) suggest implementing libcurl, I coded it in but it was reporting all files to be 0kbs big . Thanks to tnt the problem has been solved! I plan to have MxTube 2.0 out for pwnd 2.0 phones within 5 days. It will be available on Cydia for download.

PS: Sorry if this post is not formatted so well, running on 1 hour of sleep isn’t a good thing.

This is one of my favorite apps, it even made it to the list of my Top Ten Apps. Can’t wait until it is released!

Even though the jailbreak for firmware 2.0 is now available, if you choose to upgrade and jailbreak…you will not see much. The only thing available in the jailbreak is Cydia with a few applications like OpenSSH. You will not even see Installer yet. Below is what the RiP Dev blog has to say about the progress of Installer 4.0.

As you surely know by now, Pwnage Tool 2.0 is out. And for now, it has no Installer 4.0 in it.

This is because we have decided to not release an undertested product into the wild – we don’t want any mess on the phone this time. So Installer 4.0 will come out soon… as soon as we’re confident it functions properly, we will release it – and trust us, we are not going to delay it for a long time.

Meanwhile, all of the popular tools that can’t get to App Store for various reasons will have to be redone for firmware 2.0 – mostly because the inner workings of the system (in large, the way user interface works) have changed a lot since 1.1.x, so it will take some time for the authors to update and test their stuff. We expect the Installer to be ready by the time there’s something to offer you.

A lyrical off-topic. Why Big Bear in the post title and what the heck has it to do with the rest? The answer is simple – every iPhone OS release has it’s own codename (the name of the volume on the disk image file containing firmware files). 1.1.4 used to be LittleBear, and 2.0, you guessed it, is BigBear.

Now what about Kate? It is 90% ported to 2.0 as of now and we are finishing the remaining work and then testing it – so expect it to be out for Installer 4.0 in a week or two. Of course, you will not have to purchase it again if you already did (and if you have changed your iPhone to 3G model, email our sales department and they will arrange the license transfer for you).

Thanks for your patience and support!

Pwnage has been released. <strike>We will be testing it shortly.</strike> This is only available for the Mac at this time. If you try it, let us know your results in the comments.

You can download it here from the dev team or the mirror from BigBoss here.

Here is a great guide from BigBoss

UPDATE: You will need the 2.0 firmware. Use the file you used to upgrade your iPhone to 2.0.

UPDATE 2: So far, not as easy as predicted. Only the 1st Gen iPhone is supported at this time for unlocking. If you’re looking for apps, they aren’t there yet. Installer isn’t even available. Cydia is but no apps yet. There is OpenSSH so you can dig into that if you want So, unless you are looking to unlock the 1st Gen iPhone with firmware 2.0, I would wait until Installer and some apps are ported over to 2.0.

UPDATE 3: A few bugs I see. First, you can’t run pwner unless you go through making the custom firmware. Let’s say you’re going to do a second iPhone. You have to go through the process again. If I’m wrong about this let me know. If your iPhone has been pwned before you don’t need to do it again.

UPDATE 4: I keep getting this error:2008-07-19 21:45:48 – Failed to prepare x12220000_4_Recovery.ipsw file.

The Dev Team continues to keep us updated on their progress. They are still trying to work out a few bugs (scroll way down) but, they have posted a list on what PwnageTool 2.0 supports so far. It looks as though everything can be jailbroke and activated however, they do not have the iPhone 3G unlocked yet. Check it out:

So, currently (when released) PwnageTool 2.0 will support:-

    • iPhone (1st Gen) with 2.0 – Activated, Unlocked & Jailbroken, (with support for third party applications).

    • iPod Touch with 2.0 – Activated & Jailbroken, (with support for third party applications).

    • iPhone (3G) with 2.0 – Activated, Jailbroken (with support for third party applications).

We’ve made some progress on the baseband unlock of the 3G device, but at this point PwnageTool will not support 3G unlocking or BootNeuter on the 3G device. It is, of course supported on the first generation device with 2.0. We’ll push out an update with 3G support if and when it is completed.

As soon as we fix this up and test a bit more we’ll be ready for release, we’ll get back to you with a release schedule soon.

//-->

Below is the rest of the update via the Dev Team.

So we’ve been working hard on getting the release ready and during this process we’ve been fixing some final bugs, the actual base of PwnageTool application is working fine and working with all devices that we support. We’ve been restoring our devices to various firmware revisions so that we can try to reproduce the conditions that most users will have. We are able to fully install any applications on any part of the current devices running 2.0 (and b103) and these versions are the iPhone 114, iPhone 2.0, iPhone 3G.

Apple released an update (b103) just before we were about to release and that support had to be added to the current version, it is pointless to release something that doesn’t work on devices out of the box (we’ve been told new 3Gs will have this firmware), we don’t want drama, and we want to do as little support as possible, so we want to make it right the first time.

It was lucky that we delayed slightly as we discovered a bug that causes unexpected behavior when using AppStore and third party applications on the same device. We are working on fixing that bug now, we don’t anticipate it is a big one, it has some really odd side effects, causing WiFi dropouts and the loss of stored passwords for WiFi networks. Of course this is only a minor software issue, nothing like the horrible static MAC address that another “elite byte adjuster” forced upon their users.

Many of you are asking about the drama between YiPhone, ZiPhone and the Dev Team. All of which have been rumored to be creating a jailbreak for firmware 2.0. Honestly, I’m not big on drama…I will believe a jailbreak when I see it and have tested it. Until then, we will have to just wait!! Though, I hope it is soon…I really miss a ton of my Installer apps like; iPhoneHome, MIM, Kate, IntelliScreen, Customize, SummerBoard….the list goes on! Now, I just hope the apps can be rewritten to work with firmware 2.0 (why did I upgrade again?).

The App Store seems to crash one in every five times I use it (if not more), my iPhone locks up almost every time I get a text message pop-up while in a program, my iPhone randomly restarts and App Store apps constantly crash while using them. I do not seem to be the only one having these issues. Here at Apple iPhone School we have three iPhones and one iPod Touch on firmware 2.0 (the rest are still on jailbroke 1.1.4) and they are all having problems. Let me know in the comments what your experience with the 2.0 firmware as been like.
