Ok, we have been doing this TomTom Car Kit thing for almost two months now, but it seems that they might finally be getting down to business… sort of. The TomTom Car Kit is now displayed on both the Apple Store and TomTom’s website however, there are a few catches.

First, the price now seems to be $119.95 instead of the announced price of $99.99. Second, the Apple Store says that the product is, “Currently Unavailable” and TomTom’s website says that it is, “Currently not available through TomTom.com.” So, although it seems to be “ready”, they obviously are not shipping yet.

Basically, they have already delayed the Kit once so instead of delaying it again (missing their October deadline) and looking really bad, they have put the item up so it looks available when really… it’s not.

Your $119.95 will get you the Car Kit, a USB Car Charger, an Adhesive Disk and the Instruction Manual. Remember, the Car Kit does not include the TomTom iPhone application. The kit (and the TomTom application) are compatible with both the iPhone 3G and 3GS.

TomTom has added some additional information to their website about the Car Kit.

The current exploit, 24kpwn, is not working on iPhone 3GS models with this bootrom. We’ll know more and more as people buy iPhones but beware if you are buying a new one. Although there is no working jailbreak for this bootrom, hackers have always made it past any roadblocks from Apple and will likely make it past this one eventually. Here are a few quotes from the Dev Team on Twitter:

Robotvision is an augmented reality application. A quick wiki definition of Augmented Reality – “a term for a live direct or indirect view of a physical real-world environment whose elements are merged with-, or augmented by virtual computer-generated imagery – creating a mixed reality”

I got an email about this application and was instantly intrigued. I think these type of applications are just crazy! Think… you are walking down the sidewalk on your lunch break and you decide to hit-up a coffee shop but you are feeling adventurous and want to branch out from the one you usually go to so, you whip out your iPhone, open Robotvision and select the Coffee Shop option… you hold up your iPhone and as you walk down the sidewalk it begins to display all the surrounding coffee shops (in your actual “physical environment”)… you turn to the right and it displays the coffee shops that are down that street, you turn to the left and it displays the coffee shops that are down that street.

This is not the first time we have seen an application like this, Nearest Tube also used the iPhone 3GS video camera, GPS and Compass to give Londoners a real-time map and directions on where the nearest metro stations are.

Robotvision does have a few unique features such as a the ability to get a birds-eye view of Google Maps by tilting the iPhone down, some social media integration (twitter, Flickr… etc) and the ability to get info from Bing. Looks like it will be a pretty cool application. Check out the video demo below.

This application is currently in review by Apple. It will require an iPhone 3GS on 3.1 firmware.

Features:
* Type in anything with Open-ended Search
* Get a birds-eye view from Google Maps by looking down
* Quickly select from popular location categories like Coffee Shops and Tourist Attractions
* Discover rich, social content like Flickr and Twitter, with more on the way!
* Easily jump to more info on Bing like restaurant reviews, call a location or get driving directions
* Touch to select and navigate through items around you
* Set your range with an Adjustable Radius

Gene Munster, senior research analyst with Piper Jaffray, predicts that Apple will announce new carriers in the summer of 2010.

“For various reasons the company moved from an exclusive relationship with French wireless carrier Orange to a multi-carrier model,” Munster said. “In France, the company now enjoys dramatically higher market share (in the 40 percent range vs. about 15 percent in ROW) than in countries with exclusive carrier agreements (such as AT&T in the U.S. where the iPhone has market share in the mid-teens). We believe Apple is seeing the increased unit sell-through more than offset the slightly (~10 percent) deteriorated economics per unit involved in non-exclusive agreements.”

The article goes on to say that Munster is not alone in his predictions of Apple adding new carriers in the US. Others have said that Verizon could be the next carrier to see the iPhone.
