I was excited to see Kate was finally available for firmware 2.0 via the Installer. It is a public beta version of the application. I personally am a huge fan of Kate and really miss the features that I use it for. However, when I try to install the app, I get an error. The error says, “Failed script command on line 2: ChangeMode.” Then my iPhone crashed back to the SpringBoard. I was totally bummed…I was looking forward to checking it out. Let me know in the comments if you are getting the same error.

Update:: Below is a list of features that Kate 2.0b4 has. I do think that it is cool that if you previously registered the app, it will carry over to this version of Kate.

All Components:
    • First public beta for firmware 2.0. Can be installed from the repository http://i.ripdev.com/ using Installer 4.
    • All included components reworked to work under 2.0.x with the same functionality. We will expand on the featureset soon.
    • Existing subscriptions will work; you can also request a trial or check your subscription by visiting Settings > RiP Dev > RiP Dev Products preference pane.

EQ:
    • This component will not be supported under firmware 2.0 due to significant changes in the audio subsystem.

Uninstall:
    • This component is not yet supported (until Installer 4 is final).
YAY! However, it does mean that we will have to wait another day for the release of Pwnage 2.0.2.

“We’ve just had word that our friends at RiPDev almost have Installer 4 (Beta) ready for public beta release, with that awesome news we’ve decided to include it in the PwnageTool 2.0.2 release, we are waiting for the software from them and we need to quickly test and add a small couple of changes that go alongside Installer.

Usually we don’t give release dates, this is so we don’t feel pressured into releasing something if it isn’t ready, or we can hold off if something comes up in the last minute (last time this was the addition of the 3G jailbreak), today we thought we were releasing, and you guys seemed restless (we read the comments) so we said “sometime today”.

We think the Installer 4 beta is big news, and I’m sure lots of you guys want it and because of this the release should now take place sometime tomorrow (Friday), we want to do all this in one hit, we don’t want to make two releases in two days (we all have day jobs too!), and besides the work has already begun to prepare PwnageTool for Installer 4, people will always say “you should have done this” and “you should have done that”, but we think that this is the best way to lighten the load on our servers and more importantly team-members while still giving you guys all the features you want.

We don’t want to keep you guys refreshing and commenting to ask where the latest update is, so we thought we’d just tell you now.

This release will of course include the new release of cydia that has bugfixes and new features.

Please don’t wait up for us, PwnageTool 2.0.2 with shiny new stuff is coming very soon.”

Thank you very much for your support guys. We’re alive, we’re ironing out some stuff (still), and we’re ready to start kicking some serious butt in a little while.
Meanwhile, if you host a moderately big repository for Installer 3.x, this is a call for you. Please email me the URL to your repo and a brief description about it, and we’ll start sending out the new repo code along with the specs and the Installer beta on Sunday.

Please note, that picking out the repos is going to be at my own discretion, so please don’t be disappointed if we don’t pick you right away. Please also understand that I will not be able to reply to everyone personally.

Thanks!

The RiP Dev blog has posted an article describing how repos will be structured in Installer 4.0. The majority of us probably will not be extremely interested in this information but, if you have a repo that you would like to have in Installer 4.0, you will definately want to check it out. Below is a snippet of the article. You can get the full article HERE.

Installer 4 uses the new repository structure which is aimed at minimizing the traffic for both repo owner and the user, as well as expands the standard a little bit. It is still good old plists, but for the repo owner perspective, you don’t really have to mock with them… at all

Here’s how it works. Each package (a .zip file) now must contain a .plist file inside describing the package – including install/uninstall scripts, description, version, identifier, dependencies, and so on. It may also contain a png icon to be displayed as the package icon in the Installer.

When the repository owner puts the file in the repository directory tree (in the appropriate folder for the category), the repository engine does the rest – automagically extracts the plist (and the package icon) from the package archive, parses it, puts in the appropriate places and gets it ready to be served to Installer.

I have finished the repo engine code (it uses PHP) and is currently going to give it a test run for a few days internally, then we’ll put it in the public domain to re-use and abuse, along with a more detailed instructions on the package structure and plist keys (they are mostly the same).
