Another new feature of the 3.1 firmware is the ability to download ringtones wirelessly from your iPhone or iPod touch. Currently there are over 30,000 ringtones available from all 4 of the major music labels. The ringtones are $1.29 (USD) each.

To view this new feature, you will need to go into the iTunes application and then the More option on the lower menu bar. Here you will see a Ringtones option in the menu. Once selected, you have the ability to view Featured, Top Tens (by genres) or Genres of ringtones.

If you see a song from the list that piques your interest, select it. This will bring you to an info page that contains the Artist, Album title, Genre and Release Date of the song. You are also able to preview the ringtone, read reviews about the ringtone and see more media by the artist (which include songs, albums, videos… etc).

You can listen to the ringtone by tapping on the ringtones title. The ringtones range from about 20 second to 30 seconds in length. Each ringtone can be quickly purchased by tapping on the purchase price which will switch to a Buy Now button.

Once you select Buy Now, you are giving the option to assign the ringtone as the default ringtone (that would be your main ringtone), assign it to a specific contact or Done which would just add the ringtone into the list of ringtones available on your iPhone. Once you have made your selection, you will need put in your iTunes password.

Voilà, a new ringtone.

I know many of you are probably familiar with the app MakeItMine which allows you to easily customize your Carrier Logo and Banner (that is the area where the time is located on the Status Bar). One cool thing that I just found is that you can add emoticons to your Status Bar using MIM (MakeItMine).

When you open the app, just enter the emoticons like you would your custom text (see note below). Simple and easy.

I did find a few issues, the Carrier Logo area will cut the top of some of the taller emoticons (the Banner area does not). Also, you cannot use MIM to change the Banner if you have the Status Bar Date mod turned on in SBSettings. Other than that, kind of a fun little mod with the opportunity for some crazy Status Bars! You can get MakeItMine via the modmyi source.

Note: In order to have emoticons on your Status Bar, you will need to enable them on your iPhone or iPod Touch. You can do so using Spell Number….see the review of Spell Number HERE. Or, if you have a jailbroken iPhone or iPod Touch, you can use an app called Emoji in Cydia…see review of Emoji HERE>.

I will be sticking with my Safari theme with this QuickTip as well.

QuickTip – When in Safari, you can add any web page to your SpringBoard by selecting the + icon on the lower menu bar and then selecting the Add to Home Screen option. This will bring up a page displaying the web pages icon and title. You are able to change the title by taping in the title box and typing in a new title. Once you are finished, you can then select Add in the upper right corner. The web page will automatically be added to the SpringBoard with the rest of your icons. This makes for a quick and easy way to access the websites you visit most often. Screenshots below.

Thanks to everyone who has sent in a QuickTip…I have archived them and will definitely use them in the future! If you have a QuickTip you would like to submit you can email it to QuickTip@appleiphoneschool.com.

So today, with a little bit of down time before all the Christmas craziness begins, I have updated another guide on our f.a.q page. It is a detailed guide on how to add sources to Cydia. This includes step-by-step instructions on how to install additional sources using Cydia and how to manually add your own sources to Cydia. You can check out the How to Add Sources to Cydia guide HERE. If you are looking for more source…check out our Sources Page. It contains a list of sources available for both Cydia and Installer.

It seems Cydia has had quite the update. I honestly hadn’t noticed that it had updated, it didn’t give me a pop-up saying that it had an update and it didn’t show up on the list of changes so I’m assume it just did it automatically. To see the full affects of the update, you will need to close Cydia and reopen it. Upon reopening it, you will get pop-up asking if you are a User, Hacker or Developer. This will determine which apps you will see in Cydia. If you are a user Cydia will only display Graphical apps, if you are a Hacker it will display Command Line apps and if you select Developer you will see all apps. Once you have chosen your settings, it will bring you into Cydia. Now, you will see the next change in the Sections option. If you select Sections you will notice a new Edit button. If you select Edit, you are then able to turn on/off certain categories of packages. For example if you do not want to see apps in the Java Category, you can turn it off. If you decide to turn a category off, you can easily turn it back on by going back into Edit and toggling it back on.

Another new feature is the Manage option. If you select Manage, you will notice that there are now two options; Packages and Sources. If you select Packages you will get a list of all apps you have installed via Cydia. If you select Source, you care able to add and delete source. Yes, I said ADD, If you select Edit in the upper right corner, you will then be given an Add option. If you select it, you can add a source url. However, the source has to have apps developed specifically for Cydia. You can not just add any source from our sources page and it will work. Back on the main Manage page, there is also a Settings button which will give you the pop-up you saw when you first opened the app. Here you can change your filters if you would like. Overall, a very cool update. I love the ability to add sources though, I’m not sure there are any to add at this time! This still does not make me like Cydia more than Installer but, if Installer doesn’t hurry about…they could have some major competition!
