The eBay iPhone and iPod touch application has received an update to version 1.5.0. The update add a few new features including Best Offer support with push notification, live countdown timers and the ability to share items via twitter, facebook and email. It seems the update is just in time for the Holiday season. You can view the full change log below.

The American Heart Association and Ad Council have launched an iPhone application in promotion of the Hands-Only CPR campaign. The Hands-Only CPR campaign “encourages bystanders to use Hands-Only CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) when an adult collapses and is unresponsive.”

As part of the campaign they have created a free iPhone and iPod touch application that provides clear instructions on how to perform Hands-Only CPR. The application contains two instructions on how to respond when an adult has collapsed and is unresponsive.

1) Call 911.
2) Push hard and fast in the center of the chest.

The app also provides video instructions on how to perform Hands-Only CPR as well as a audio queues that indicate the exact speed in which you should administer the compressions.

“For years the survival rate from sudden cardiac arrest has been abysmal,” said Clyde Yancy, M.D., American Heart Association president. “Bystanders hold the key to increasing survival. We hope this campaign will break through the barriers people have when they see someone in cardiac arrest – so that anyone who hears this message can help save a life.”

“Every day, nearly 800 Americans suffer sudden cardiac arrest outside of hospitals, according to the American Heart Association, and less than 10 percent will survive to hospital discharge. American Heart Association, Ad Council launch Hands-Only™ CPR campaign
DALLAS, Oct. 28, 2009 /PRNewswire/ — The Ad Council and American Heart Association today launched a national multimedia public service advertising (PSA) campaign that encourages bystanders to use Hands-Only CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) when an adult collapses and is unresponsive.

The PSAs — distributed to about 33,000 media outlets nationwide this week – will air and run in advertising time and space donated by the media. An integrated social media program will extend the reach of the PSA campaign online with strategies designed to engage and educate adults throughout the country.

Hands-Only CPR, or CPR without mouth-to-mouth breathing, is a two-step technique that involves calling 9-1-1 and pushing hard and fast in the center of the chest until professional help arrives.

“Hands-Only CPR is an easy and effective technique that has the potential to save lives every day if we can educate more Americans about it and reduce their fears and hesitation,” said Peggy Conlon, president and CEO of the Ad Council.

Forty-four percent of adults say they would not perform CPR because they’re not confident in their ability, according to a national American Heart Association survey conducted in 2008. Consumer research also shows that people often hesitate because they’re not comfortable with giving mouth-to-mouth CPR.

“This new campaign beautifully depicts the power of hands in helping to save a life,” Conlon said. “I believe it will empower more bystanders to take action when they see someone in cardiac arrest.”

Through the Hands-Only CPR campaign, the American Heart Association and Ad Council hope to reach all adults, particularly women age 55 years and older who are most likely to be the spouses of potential victims.

“For years the survival rate from sudden cardiac arrest has been abysmal,” said Clyde Yancy, M.D., American Heart Association president. “Bystanders hold the key to increasing survival. We hope this campaign will break through the barriers people have when they see someone in cardiac arrest – so that anyone who hears this message can help save a life.”

Created pro bono by Gotham Inc., an ad agency in New York, the campaign includes television, radio, print, outdoor and Web PSAs. The PSAs direct audiences to visit www.HandsOnlyCPR.org, where they can gain access to information and resources on the technique, including an instructional video.

The site also includes an online tool, “Hands Symphony,” where visitors can use their “hands” to create original music. Users can choose from a host of sounds created by different filmed hands to create their own track, and send it to their friends, encouraging them to create their own tracks, or add on to other friends’ tracks.

Visitors to the Web site can also download a free instructional application for their smartphone that teaches the technique. The application is available on the iPhone and iPod touch, Blackberry, Palm Pre and Android (Google) platforms.

“It’s a rare occasion when advertising can help save lives,” said Peter McGuinness, CEO of Gotham. “We hope that through this campaign, we can encourage all bystanders, trained or untrained, to do something when they see an adult suddenly collapse.”

LUMA, by Walt Disney, is a unique puzzle game. The game has a simple objective, connect the lighted paths by linking the nodes. As easy as that sounds, the game provides a challenging game play.

The controls are nicely designed, you are able to rotate the lighted nodes using a control bar on the left side of the screen. As you rotate a node the lines inside the node will connect to the lines in the next node causing it to light up. You continue to connect the nodes until you have reached the end.

LUMA contains two game modes; Adventure and Survival. The Survival mode is locked until you have completed all the levels in Adventure mode. You are also able to view any acheivements you have unlocked.

A few things to note. You may only rotate nodes that are lighted and you do not have to use all the nodes on the screen. You only use as many nodes as are needed to connect the beginning to the end.

I have to be honest, I’m a puzzle-gameaholic… LUMA not only provides the challenge I love to see in a puzzle game it does so in a well-designed, entertaining and relaxing manner. If you are into puzzle games, LUMA is most definitely worth the $0.99 price tag.

Once you navigate your way through the alphabetically list of the European countries and find the one you are looking for, you are able to view; the Capital, Official Language, Anthem, Area, Currency, Calling Code, a map of the country, the national flag of the country and the coat of arms for the country. You are also provided with a direct link to that country’s info on Wikipedia so you are able to find out more about the specific country.

There is one improvement I would love to see in this app… it would be nice if the map of the country opened in Google Maps within the actual application itself instead of launching the stock Maps app. Other than that… the app provides basic info in an easy to navigate manner.

Joe Hewitt, the developer of the iPhone facebook application, has tweeted for the first time in about a month and the tweet is shocking… he has decided to quit developing the app due to Apple’s approval process.

“Time for me to try something new. I’ve handed the Facebook iPhone app off to another engineer, and I’m onto a new project.”

TechCrunch was able to get a little more info from Hewitt and this is what he had to say…

My decision to stop iPhone development has had everything to do with Apple’s policies. I respect their right to manage their platform however they want, however I am philosophically opposed to the existence of their review process. I am very concerned that they are setting a horrible precedent for other software platforms, and soon gatekeepers will start infesting the lives of every software developer.

The web is still unrestricted and free, and so I am returning to my roots as a web developer. In the long term, I would like to be able to say that I helped to make the web the best mobile platform available, rather than being part of the transition to a world where every developer must go through a middleman to get their software in the hands of users.”

Tripod Camera is a multifunctional camera application containing features such as; Anti-Tilt, Anti-Shake, Timer, Full Screen Shutter, Vibrate mode, Fast Saving, 4x Digital Zoom, Tap-to-Focus (3GS only) and the ability to share photos.

In the settings of the application, you are able to turn on/off Anti-Tilt, Anti-Tilt, Anti-Shake, Time, Full Screen Shutter, Vibrate mode and Fast Saving. Each of these option have great descriptions in the settings… props for that!

On the main photo screen you are able to take a picture, zoom in on an image (1x – 4x digit zoom) and preview photos. When you are previewing photos you can easily share them on twitter, facebook, momo or via email. There is also a Tap-to-Focus option (3GS only) that can be enabled/disabled in the stock Settings application under the Tripod Camera option.

I found the Anti-tilt feature to work really well actually, all the features worked really well. I had a little trouble figuring out how the Anti-Shake feature worked but, that was total user error. You have to actually touch the Snap button and then it will automatically take the picture as soon as your iPhone is steady. I keep just waiting for it to take the picture without tapping the Snap button. My bad!

I also like the little features this app contains such as the hand at the top of the screen that tells you when your device is steady. It also displays the current zoom level and if you have a specific option turned on such as the Full Screen Shutter option.

Overall, Tripod Camera is a very nicely deigned and extrememly user friendly application. One of the better camera apps I have reviewed.

It is currently on sale for an introductory price of $1.99.

Apptizr asks for basic information about your demographics and interests. It then uses that information to make suggestions about applications that you might be interested in downloading from the App Store. When I tested the site, it did a decent job of recommending applications that I would be interested in downloading. I think as I use it more and make more suggestions it will become even more targeted to the apps I prefer. The only thing I would like to see is the ability to sort between free and paid applications. Other than that, a nicely designed website that can be very helpful in sorting through 100,000 applications!

Woot Buzz is a simple application that will notify you when your keywords come up for sale at Woot.com, kids.woot.com, sellout.woot.com, wine.woot.com and shirts.woot.com.

This app is very simple… enter keywords and you will be notified via a free text message when those items become available on one of the five woot sites.

“When you item is found Woot Buzz sends you a free text message to your phone. This text message is absolutely free and you will not be charged for it.

Follow the link at the bottom of the message to visit the website that has your item for sale and buy it at a discount.”

How to use Woot Buzz:
Go to the Search option on the lower menu bar, enter a keyboard (or words), select your carrier and hit Save. You will get a pop-up saying that you will be notified when that keyword is available on woot. It will take around 30 seconds for your keyword to show up in the Keywords section of the app. You can turn the app on/off and delete keywords in the Keywords option on the lower menu bar.

This application does not have a stellar design, it’s pretty simple, but it could definitely be a useful application especially coming into the Holiday season! Now, you don’t have to check all the woot sites everyday… you can get a text when the things you actually want go for sale! w00t!
