Infinifolders, one of my absolute “must-have” hacks that allows the ability to add unlimited apps into a folder, has been updated to version 1.3-1. There isn’t an official change log but I’m guessing it has to do with compatibility for iOS 4.2.1 or maybe it adds the much awaited iPad support (which I can’t test because Doug has taken the iPad hostage!)! If you haven’t checked out this app yet… it’s worth a look and worth the $1.99 price tag. You can get Infinifolders via the BigBoss source.

PS. If you have any specifics about the update… let me know in the comments!

It seems that Google has added a new “iPhone Apps” category to their mobile search. When searching for something in Google, using Safari on your device, you are now able to select an iPhone Apps option in the More drop down menu. When you select the iPhone Apps option, it displays a list of iPhone apps relevant to your Google search. The icon, price, star rating, number of reviews, and short description are displayed for each app result. If you select one of the apps, it brings you directly to that application in the App Store on your device. Pretty cool. Check out the screenshots below.

Philip W. Schiller, head of worldwide product marketing at Apple, said in an interview that over the last few weeks a small number of developers had been submitting “an increasing number of apps containing very objectionable content.”

“It came to the point where we were getting customer complaints from women who found the content getting too degrading and objectionable, as well as parents who were upset with what their kids were able to see,” Mr. Schiller said.

Mr. Schiller said Apple had to prioritize its customers. “We obviously care about developers, but in the end have to put the needs of the kids and parents first,” he said.

When asked about the Sports Illustrated app, Mr. Schiller said Apple took the source and intent of an app into consideration. “The difference is this is a well-known company with previously published material available broadly in a well-accepted format,” he said.

This comes quickly after the previous update to version 2.28. The new version seems to be mostly bug fixes. The main fix was for a bug in which icons were duplicated and not removed off springboard. Below is the full change log for 2.29. I had no problem updating Categories on my iPhone though, I didn’t have any problems updating to version 2.28 either. You can get Categories via the BigBoss source.

2.29 Change Log:
- Fix: Fixed issue where icons wouldn’t delete from SpringBoard when no icons were ever hidden before.
- Added check for libhide
- Added a small icon for Spotlight
- Fix: Failed to recognize recent folder created with Categories 2.28
- Fix: Unable to save default settings to be applied to new folders
- FIx: If an application in a category is uninstalled, remove it from the category

Genius Recommendations for Applications is a new feature of the 3.1 firmware. This feature makes recommendations for new apps based on the apps you already own. It will give you a list of recommended apps and why they have recommended them.

Once you have updated your device, you can go into the App Store application and then the Featured option on the lower menu bar. Once in the Featured option, there will be a new tab at the top of the page titled Genius (it is located next to New and What’s Hot).

The first time you open the Genius feature you will have to set it up. First you must choose the “Turn On Genius” option. You are then greeted with some Terms and Conditions lingo that you must agree to (twice). Once you have successfully turned on Genius for Apps, it will begin to load recommended applications.

I tested this feature on my son’s iPhone and it actually did pretty well. It recommended 15 applications (with the option to see more recommendations) that were very similar to the ones he plays most often. I also like that on each recommendation, it displays which installed application the recommendation is based off. You can also swipe and remove a recommendation from the list.

I couldn’t really determine any sort of order for the recommendations, they seemed pretty random. This feature is available for both the iPhone and the iPod touch on 3.1

Overall, a very handy new feature that could make the black hole of applications in the App Store a little less overwhelming and a little more manageable.

David Pogue, the tech columnist for the New York Times, recent tweeted that you can install more than 180 apps on your iPhone and then access them via Spotlight search:

You can install UNLIMITED APPS! Only 180 show up as icons—but Spotlight can find and open all of them! (And yes, we tried. Stopped at 250!)

The only problem I see to this is that if you install your 181th app, you won’t be able to move it to a page to organize your apps since you can’t see it on any of your home screens. You’d also have to uninstall the app via iTunes on your computer because you can’t see it to tap and hold on it if you wanted to uninstall.

Since my iPhone is jailbroken, I am using categories to organize my apps that aren’t on my first couple of pages. Unfortunately none of this works on Web Apps. You can’t Spotlight search for them, you can’t put them in categories, and you can’t even put then in a Stack.

This version of Backgrounder is for firmware 3.0 and above. If you are on 2.2.1 or below make sure you DO NOT upgrade. The update also only enables the basic backgrounder feature…there are no extra features at this time. The developer says it will take some time to get the features working on the 3.0 firmware.

To enable Backgrounder, just open an application and then hold the Home Button. You will get a nice pop-up saying that Backgrounder in enabled. You can then close the app by giving your Home Button a quick tap. To disable Backgrounder, open the application back up and hold the Home Button. You will get a pop-up saying that Backgrounder has been disabled.

Because there are no features, you will just have to remember which apps you have running in the background….we are going old school. Remember, leaving apps running in the background will affect your battery life!
