Tonight, my wife and I went to dinner with friends, one being a local radio station manager. He was telling me one of his employees was super excited about a DJ app that was released recently. He said the guy had been waiting for the app and that I should check it out. Well, looking for videos for tonight’s Friday Night Movie Night I just happened to run across the same app and I’m telling you, from the video, it looks like it’s worth the $19.99 their asking for it. I’m gonna try hard to get a promo code for this app and get a video review of all it’s features. Being such an expensive app, you need to know what it can do before you buy. Here’s their promo video which is pretty convincing if you’re into this kinda stuff.

Today, there was an update to FaceMic, an app that allows you to record audio and then send it straight to your Facebook page (posting it on your “wall”). The update adds quite a few new features (see change log below). Two of the coolest new features include the ability to upload photos with audio recording and the ability to pick a specific friend and post an audio recording to their wall!

With the update, comes a little bit of a new look for the app. When you open it, you will notice that there are a few new buttons. In the upper left corner, is the geo location button. When you select this, the app will find your exact location and will post it with your audio recording.

In the upper right corner is a photo option. This allows you to take a picture or choose one from your Photo Albums and will post it with your audio recording. A couple things to note about the image option, when you choose an image you will see an area that is greyed out at the top…this is where the image gets cut off so be sure to position it correctly. Also, be sure to remove the photo before you post your next recording, it is not removed automatically after you post it. To remove the image, just select the photo button and select the Remove Photo button. I personally think it should be removed automatically after you post the recording. I can see myself forgetting to remove it and then posting it with my next audio recording accidentally…which could make for a confusing situation!

The other new button in on the lower menu bar….it likes like the silhouette of two people. With this option, you are able to choose from a list of all your friend’s. This allows you to post an audio recording/image to a specific person’s wall. For example, I posted an image of our son on Doug’s wall with a little audio recording describing the picture. I tell ya, I already thought this app was super sweet and now it just got soooo much cooler!

With the updated UI of the application itself comes an updated UI on the Facebook page as well…and man does it look nice. When you post a recording on your or someones elses wall, it dispaly this nice little Play widget. When you click on it, it drops down the image and the audio recording. You can also tap on the globe icon and get a little pop-down map of the exact location of the audio recording (if you selected the geo location option in the app before posting the recording). You also have the ability to see “More Recordings” which will open a page with all your past recordings that you have posted along with any recording that your friend’s have posted.

Overall, I just love this application. It’s fun, well developed and impeccably designed. For $0.99, it is at the top of my must-have applications list! Seriously, you have got to try this one out…sending/receiving voice recordings on Facebook is the “new” wall post…it’s so fun!

Change log:
- Ability to upload photos with audio recording
- Posting geo location
- Pick a friend and post to their wall
- OS 3.0 compatibility
- Live Help from within the App
- Updated how it works screen
- Updated main recorder user interface
- Improved error handling
- Miscellaneous bugfixes and improvements

We recently did a review of FaceMic, an application that allows you to record audio and then send it straight to your Facebook page (posting it on your “wall”). Well TweetMic is the same concept only via Twitter. It allows you to record audio and then send it as a tweet. Very cool.

TweetMic functions basically the same as FaceMic. When you first open it, you will need to go to the Setup option where you will enter your Twitter info. You can also change the default phrase under the Setup option.

To record audio, all you need to do is head over to the Record option and then select the red record button in the center of the screen. It begins recording right away so make sure you are ready! As you record to can see the time and the volume of your recording. To stop recording, just tap the red record button again. You can then listen to your recording using the green play button. If you would like to re-record the audio just tap the red record button again (this will delete your previous recording). You can enter a title for the recording in the text box at the top of the screen. Once you have the recording and the title how you would like it, just select the Publish to Twitter option and your recording it immediately sent as a tweet.

The tweet will contain a link that links to a clean, simple page that contains the flash audio recording. If you are in your iPhone or iPod Touch, which does not play flash, the audio is converted to a QuickTime audio file which can then be listened to on the iPhone or iPod Touch.

One difference between FaceMic and TweetMic is that TweetMic displays all your tweets (via the Tweets option) instead of just the audio tweets you have recorded using TweetMic. I think I would rather have a History option like FaceMic where I can listen to all previous audio recording instead of listing all my Tweets…I use a Twitter app for that.

Like FaceMic, I find this application to be well designed, easy to use and fun. The audio quality is good and the implementation on Twitter and the iPhone is sleek. Definitely worth the $0.99. It is fun to both send and receive audio tweets! You should try it!

FaceMic is very well designed and extremely easy to use.

When you open FaceMic, you will notice four options on the lower menu bar; Record, History, Setup and About. You will want to start with the Setup option. Here you will need to enter your Facebook info (email address and password). Once you have finished entering your info, you will then need to select the Grant Permission option. That is all it takes to setup FaceMic.

Once you have the recording and the title how you would like it, just select the Publish to facebook option and your recording it immediately sent to your Wall on facebook where it can very easily be listen to.

You can view and listen to your past recordings using the History option.

Overall, I find this application to be well designed, easy to use and fun. Not only that but, the audio quality is good and the implementation on Facebook is sleek. Definitely worth the $0.99. It will be interesting to see if it takes off. I will admit that listening to an audio update is way more fun than reading one!

My wife and I like to play a game called “I liked it better when…” Whenever we see a movie, commercial, or something that seems to be duplicating a prior idea, we’ll say “I liked it better when…” and insert the name of the idea that’s being copied. In the case of Readdle’s Take a Note, I liked it better when it was called Evernote.

Overview
Almost eerily identical to Evernote, the opening user menu of Take a Note gives you options to add a text note, an audio note, a drawing note, and a photo note. All notes that are created on the iPhone are editable, sortable, and searchable. WiFi access gives you the option to transfer notes to and from your computer or other wireless enabled sources. Notes can be emailed directly from the program and the app uses your contacts list to add recipients.

Start on a good note.
Although I am admittedly biased towards Evernote, I will acknowledge several areas where Take a Note excels and may even be a stronger option than Evernote. Many have commented on the nice and clean look of Take a Note, and I will agree. The notebook appearance is eye catching and seems apropos for the function of the program. Aesthetics aside, Take a Note also allows for transfer of notes to and from your computer via a WiFi connection. Having recently setup a network place for Readdledocs and Air Sharing, I was well versed in this capability, and had no problem accessing notes on my computer. Take a Note also allows for editing of notes directly on the iPhone. Evernote does the same, but many have complained that you cannot edit notes that have any graphics in them (even the parts that are not graphics). Lastly, Take a Note does bypass the need for a web-based application. Thus, the speed of the program is superior to Evernote, and I like the sort option as it fits in with the appearance of the iPhone’s contacts application.

Do note this, though.
Although I was able to connect with my home computer, I did have some trouble opening the notes on my computer despite the fact that they were stored as simple .TXT files. Since there is no web application like Evernote, there is no capability for cutting and pasting into Take a Note. With Evernote, I clip and store emails (graphics and web links included) into my account on my home computer or any web browser and these notes then sync immediately with the iPhone app. Thus, Evernote’s weakness as a web based application is also a strength since I can clip items wherever I have an Internet connection whereas with Take a Note, you must have a WiFi connection in order to transfer notes to and from your iPhone.

Conclusion
I will admit that coming into this review, I thought that I was going to be more negative about Take a Note. Compared to Evernote, a free app, I felt that Take a Note would fall short on features despite having a significant cost of $4.99. As I explored a bit more and as I was writing this review, I managed to see the strengths of the app, and I feel that there is a potential market for this program. If you don’t want to be tied down to a web app, and you’d like a simple, yet polished native app that’s significantly more useful than the built-in notes app, Take a Note may be right for you. However, if you are interested in exploring a bit with a larger set of features, I’d suggest giving Evernote a try before shelling out your $4.99 for this app.

The expected update is now out for Cycorder which includes audio. I tried it out this morning and the audio quality is really good. There’s a list of other updates in the change log in Cydia like colorized navigation buttons and minor badge fixes. But a really nice feature update is TV out supported playback. I assume that this means if you use the iPhone or iPod Touch TV Out Adapter from Apple that you can watch your videos from Cycorder on your TV. Another added feature keeps your iPhone from autolocking during recording.

Overall a very nice update and great quality. Now there just needs to be features to email or send to YouTube and it will be perfect! Leave your comments below on what other features you’d like to see
The best part about the application is that you are able to play audio of the Spanish translation. When you open the application you will get a list of topics that include; Essentials, Travel, Accommodation, Food and Drink, Socializing, Shopping, Medical, Dates and Time, Numbers, Emergencies and Copyright Info. Inside each topic, you will then get a list of categories in that topic or a list of phrases to choose from.

For example in the Essentials topic, there are phrase such as; Do you speak English, I don’t Understand…etc. In the Accommodations topic there are four categories; Locating, Booking, Requesting and Complaints. In each of these you will find phases such as; I’m Looking for a hotel, Do you have any vacancies, May I have another towel…etc. When you select a phrase, it will open to that phrase’s page where the phrase will be written in English and Spanish. There will also be a speaker icon at the bottom of the screen. If selected, it will play audio of the phrase in Spanish. the audio is good quality making it very clear and very understandable. There are a ton of great phrases to choose from in this application, it is definitely a must have if traveling (or if you are trying to learn Spanish!). You can also get Talking French Phrasebook, Talking German Phrasebook and Talking Italian Phrasebook…all of which are free.

tt-clock is a 4-way digital clock that talks made by Jake Wolpert. When you start the application, you have to tap the screen once more in order to get to the clock. The clock is set in military time and there is no way to change that. Your iPhone/iPod Touch can be in landscape mode and upside down, or portrait mode and upside down. Either way, the digital clock will change according to the direction and it changes color according to the direction as well! Another thing I found was if you lay your device flat it will sometime go black and if you flip it over, the application will crash. If you tap the digital clock, you will hear a robotic voice telling you the time. The voice does not tell you the exact time but it uses approximations like “quarter-to”. You can get tt-clock from the BigBoss source. Check out the screen shots below and an example of the audio.

Here is an example of the audio – tt-clock audio
