Pandora updated their iPhone app to finally support running in the background. It’s using Apple’s new APIs to keep the audio streaming in the background but close down the rest of the app to save battery life. It worked well on my iPhone 3GS and the new iPod controls in the dock now support Pandora when it’s open.

Backgrounding this app only works on iOS 4 which means it doesn’t background on the iPad. Below is what it looks like.

Backgrounder, a hack that allows applications to run in the background, has been updated to version svn.r432 (and svn.r436). The new version actually makes a decent amount of changes to the hack (full change log below).

The overall settings of the app have changed… including more description about each setting… which is nice.

In the Global option of the settings, you will find quite a few more features including the ability to choose the type of Backgrounding Method (Off, Native and Backgrounder), choose the Backgrounding State (Enable at Launch or Stay Enabled – previously Backgrounding Persists), the ability to turn on a Status Bar Icon and the options to Fallback to Native and Minimize on Toggle.

All settings can now be set per-application using a new option in the settings called Overrides (this replaces the previous “Application-specific” option). You are able to add applications to the Override option and then choose specific settings for that particular application. If you have an application in the Overrides option, it will override the settings in the Global option.

The Control and Documentation options in the settings are basically the same as the precious version.

Another new feature is the ability to reset all the settings. This can be done with the Reset button on the top right of the main settings page. Check out the change log below for the rest of the new features and bug fixes.

Endless Walls is a pretty cool wallpaper application. When you first open the application, it does require you to create an account (or log in if you already have an account) though the process is quick and easy.

Once signed in, the app will automatically begin displaying wallpapers. You can pause the automatic slide-show of wallpapers by tapping the pause button on the lower menu bar. If you do find a wallpaper you would like to save, you can quickly save it to your Camera Roll using the save button all the way to the right on the lower menu bar.

The app does have a few other handy options including the ability to favorite wallpapers, the ability to select/unselect specific categories of wallpapers, the ability to view wallpapers by Categories, Most Popular, Most Recent and Your Favorites as well as the ability to submit your own wallpapers to the app.

I would love to see the ability to view only specific categories of wallpapers. I would also like to see the ability to delete wallpapers from the Favorites.

Overall, it is actually a pretty nicely designed application with a decent variety of wallpapers. You can pick it up via the modmyi source.

In the last two days, MacCiti has released 6 Christmas Wallpaper Packs. Instead of doing them each individually I thought I would put them all in one post so that you can compare. Most of the packs contain ten wallpapers all of which are totally random (and vary in quality) but will definitely put you in the Christmas spirit!

Remember, when you install this wallpaper pack, the wallpapers are added to your stock Settings application under Wallpapers. You can get Christmas Walls via the MacCiti source.

Note: If you would like to manually delete some of the wallpapers once you install the pack, you can ssh into the Library/Wallpapers folder on your iPhone or iPod Touch and delete them from there.

BossPaper, an application that allows you to control your wallpaper, was updated to version 1.1. The update adds a new Under WinterBoard option. This option allows you to put your background underneath a WinterBoard background.

1.1 Change Log:
Added ability to inject underneath winterboard background rather than on top of it. This is useful for those that want to run a date / time widget or other javascript winterboard widget with bosspaper. Read the details in the in app help on this feature. If you enable this and have any winterboard theme with any background, you will see that background instead of bosspaper.

BigBoss has added a post to his website about the BossPaper update. Here is what it says.

BossPaper v1.1 is released. The main addition is the ability to select whether or not you want BossPaper to be on top of or underneath your winterboard background.

BossPaper v1.0 overlays over winterboard. This means if you have a javascript date / time widget you want to run, you cant it will be covered up by bosspaper. This also has some benefits though for example, you can run a theme with one image and icons then use bosspaper to rotate backgrounds.

BossPaper v1.1 defaults to the same mode as BossPaper 1.0 where the wallpaper image is on top of winterboard. But it has a new switch called “Under Winterboard” where when “ON” the BossPaper wallpaper will be rendered underneath winterboard backgrounds. This lets you have a date / time widget or some other interesting javascript widget in winterboard while using bosspaper to rotate images. (Some theme makers have requested this).

I have explained this in the apps help and covered various scenarios. Those that understand winterboard really well can also make a transparent 320×480 png image and move it to the top of winterboard. Then put bosspaper below winterboard and winterboard will always show the blank wallpaper but behind that you’ll see bosspaper running. This would allow you to run themes that have both icons and backgrounds but have the background be ignored. I did not include a transparent 320×480 theme but I may release one as an addon if it is required and does not confuse people.

Many of you may already be familiar with the iComplete theme however, it has been revamped and released as iComplete 3. The name says it all… iComplete is an extrememly complete theme that contains a mod for just about everything. We are talking everything here; icons, wallpaper, loading screen, lockscreen background, lockscreen battery, sliders, Notes app, Weather app, Calculator app, dialer, dock, status bar, SMS bubbles, loading image, page dots, Safari… you name, it’s modded. TaskList is an application that when open, gives you a list of everything that is running on your iPhone or iPod Touch. Nothing fancy, just a textual list of processes that is running. It includes all the kernel and user processes running in the background. You can get TaskList via the BigBoss source.

Live Strong is a simple yellow and black WinterBoard theme that contains 85 icons, a dock and a wallpaper. This theme does not contain any bells and whistles… it’s just the basics but, sometimes less is more! The only thing I would have like to have seen is a matching badge. Other than that… not too bad. You can get Live Strong via the modmyi source.

Version 2 of the Acevedo Collection of wallpapers was released in Cydia. This wallpaper pack contains 12 wallpapers. 7 of them contain the Apple logo. Below are screenshots of all 12 wallpapers. Remember, when you install this wallpaper pack, the wallpapers are added to your stock Settings application under Wallpapers. You can get Acevedo Collection v2 via the MacCiti source.

iSummer is a nice WinterBoard theme that contains slides, a dock, status bar, badges, dialer, pop-up mod, wallpaper, 64 icons…etc. It is a dark theme but, it is well designed. I did notice that the theme folder has an icons2 folder with more icons in it. So, if you are ssh savvy, you can ssh into the Library/Theme/iSummer 2.0/icons2 folder and copy out all the icons and add them to the Library/Themes/iSummer 2.0/Icons folder. This theme also has a matching SBSettings theme. You can get both the iSummer Theme and the iSummer SBS Theme via the BigBoss source.

2. Make sure you have the BigBoss source installed in Cydia.
