IconMaker is a pretty cool application that allows you to quickly create custom icons right from your device. It turns images into nice shiny, rounded icons. Personally, this is an awesome application for me. I create icons all the time and now, instead of opening Photoshop on my computer and creating an icon, I can create it right on my iPhone!

When you open the application, there are a few options;

Save to photo library – when turned on, will save a copy of the newly created icon to your Photo Library
Save File – when turned on, will save a copy of the newly created icon to /var/mobile/Library/IconMaker/icon.png on your device
Apply overlay – when turned on, will apply the glossy affect to the newly created icon
Apple shadow – when turned on, will apply a shadow to the bottom of the newly created icon
Open in iFile – when turned on, will open the newly created icon in iFile

Using this application is pretty simple. First, you will need to save the image you would like to turn into an icon into your Camera Roll. There are a few ways you can do this. If you have an application icon you would just like to make look nicer, you can go into iFile, find the application with the icon you would like to modify, find the icon and save the icon to your Camera Roll. If there is an image you want to make into an icon, you can go into Safari on your device and do a Google image search for a square version of the image. To save an image from Safari to your Camera Roll… just tap and hold on the image and then select “Save Image.”

Once you have an image in your Camera Roll, you can go open the ImageMaker application and get started. It’s super easy. Just select the options you would like, tap the camera icon in the top right corner, select the image you save to your Camera Roll and tap Generate icon. Tada! A brand new icon!

Depending on which options you chose… the new icon will now be saved in your Camera Roll or as a file on your device. You can then get the icon off your device by emailing it, SSHing it off, taking it off via USB… etc.

I had no issues when testings this application. It worked great as long as I had an image that was a square. If the image you select is not a square, the newly created icon will look a little distorted. But, if you have a square image… it works just fine.

IconMaker was just updated today to a new version that adds the ability to create an icon for a specific theme. Which was kind of a cool update. You can get IconMaker via the BigBoss source.

FakeCarrier is an application that allows you to easily customize both your carrier name and time string in the Status Bar. The app is super simple to use. Once installed, it has three options; Fake Carrier, Fake Time and Show BatteryLevel. To change the carrier or time string just open the option, type your custom message into the space provided and select Set. The string will instantly change without having to close the app or respring your device… this is a nice feature because then you can instantly see what your custom string looks like and if you do not like it, you can just change it right there. To get the stock Carrier name of Time string back, just tap Reset. Simple and easy.

The Carrier name needs to be less than twelve characters to display the entire field. If your custom Carrier name is longer than twelve characters is will display the first eight characters and then ….. The time strings allows for a much longer custom string. I did notice that the app does have a few glitches. When you have a long custom time string and then change the Carrier name to something over ten characters… it gets a little confused. I had a few instances where the app didn’t work exactly correctly but overall… it got the job done. If you find things are really messed up, just reset everything and then respring your device.

FakeCarrier also has an option to turn on the battery percentage next to the battery image on the Status Bar. This will display the current battery percentage along with the battery image. This is probably a more useful option for those on older firmwares. The new iOS’s have this option built-in stock… you can do this by going into the stock Settings application then the General option and then the Usage option. There you will see the Battery Percentage option which you can turn on/off.

You can get FakeCarrier via the BigBoss source.

CustomBadges is an application that allows you to create custom badges… go figure! A custom badge can be added to any icon on your SpringBoard and can include; text, numbers, emojis, symbols… basically anything on your keyboard. It seems like it fits best to have a custom badge that is five characters or less. Once you have more than five characters it does not display correctly.

The app is pretty simple to use… once installed from Cydia, you can tap and hold any icon to put your icons into “wiggle” mode once they are wiggle just double tap on the icon your would like to create a custom badge for… this will bring up a pop-up allowing you to create a custom badge. Removing a custom badge is just as simple… once again put your icons into “wiggle” mode, tap the icon that has the badge you would like to remove and select the Clear option in the pop-up.

The only catch I have found is that if you set a custom badge to an icon that has it’s own badges, for example like the App Store icon, the stock badge will override the custom badge. So, if you set a custom badge to the App Store and then you have a few apps that need updates, the number badge will override the custom badge and will display the number of updates in the badge instead of the one you created.

This app does not add an icon to your SpringBoard but it is added into the stock Settings application. There are not settings for the app itself but, if you forget how to use the app… you can go into the stock Settings app and get instructions there. You can get CustomBadges via the BigBoss source.

Many of you know that I am always on the look-out for a new style of transparent icons (because you can change the wallpaper and feel like you have a whole new theme!). This theme contains a wallpaper, dock, sliders, 58 icons, loading screens, custom UI….etc.

I do have a few problems with this theme. The Message application doesn’t have an icon. There is an icon for SwirlyMMS so, you can always change it to your Message icon using ssh. And it doesn’t seem like the theme has the correct dock but, you can always use the transparent dock and it looks fine.

Here are some instructions on how to manually get themes onto your iPhone and/or iPod Touch. These are instructions for firmware 2.x. If you need instructions for firmware 1.1.4 and below please see THIS post.

If a theme is not available through Cydia, you will have to add it manually yourself. You will need to have a jailbroke iPhone or iPod Touch in order to change the theme on your iPhone or iPod Touch. For more information on Jailbreaking, please see our F.A.Q. Page.

When you jailbreak your iPhone/iPod Touch, the Cydia application will be added to your SpringBoard with the rest of your applications. You will want to go into Cydia and search for the OpenSSH application. If it is not already installed, you will need to install it.

You will then need to install WinSCP on your PC. Macs come with openssh but if you’d like some alternatives check here. To connect to WinSCP you will need to go into your Settings application on your iPhone and then into the Wi-fi option, click on the little arrow next to the Wi-Fi you are connected to and get the ip address. Now open WinSCP on your computer….the Host Name is your ip address (with the periods) the user name is root and the password is alpine. Don’t worry about the Private key file, you don’t need to put anything there. Hit login.

Once WinSCP opens, you will see all the files on your iPhone/iPod Touch and the file structure. Themes are located in the Library/Themes folder. Once you are in that folder you will see all the themes that are on your iPhone. This is where you will want to add your new themes.

If you are creating a theme – Create a folder somewhere on your computer that is the title of the theme you would like to add (ex…Chalkwork) then inside of the Chalkwork folder create another folder called Icons (with a capital “I”). Inside the Icons folder put all of the icon images that you would like to have. They must be named the same as the Title of the app, starting with a capital (Ex…Calendar.png, WinterBoard.png, AppStore.pgn, Stocks.png….). You can also add a Dock and Wallpaper to the Chalkwork folder, they also need to be capitalized (do not put them in the Icons folder…just in the main Chalkwork folder). Once you have a folder of the theme with a folder of icons inside it you just drag the whole folder, Chalkwork, into the Library/Themes folder on your iPhone or iPod Touch via WinSCP and hit Copy. Once it is done transferring you can go on your iPhone into WinterBoard and select the theme you just added. Note: your iPhone has to be on for the file to transfer!

If you are downloading a theme that is in a zip file – you will have to open the zip file and then create a folder on your computer that is the same name as the theme you are trying to download. Then copy the Icons folder from the zip file into the folder you created on your computer. This unzips the file so that you can add it to WinterBoard through WinSCP. You can also copy the wallpaper and dock out of the zip file into the file you created if you would like them too. If you are looking for some themes to download, check out our Downloadable Themes page.

However, version 2.87 of Ringtones has already been released (a month ago!). I did notice that when I installed the “update” it changed the application icon. There are no other visual changes to the application so, I’m not really sure what the deal is…maybe just an icon update. You are able to create ringtones from sound affects, QuickTime videos, Mac friendly movie files and unprotected iTunes music files. One nice thing about PocketMac RingtoneStudio for iPhone is that it is available to everyone with an iPhone…no jailbreaking required.

It is a program that you download to your computer, it creates ringtones and then you sync them to your iPhone via iTunes (see demo video and screenshots below). What is really nice about this application is the ability to customize your ringtones. If the multimedia file is longer than 30 seconds, you are easily able to choose the exact 30 second clip that you would like as your ringtone. If the file is shorter than 30 seconds, it will automatically convert the file into a ringtone for you. The application costs $14.95 USD. For more information head over to their website.

Full Press Release

For Release On Or After:
July 1, 2008

New Software Empowers iPhone Users To Turn Almost Any Media File
Into Ringtones

 San Diego, CA–July 1, 2008–Information Appliance Associates,
creators of industry-leading connectivity solutions, announces the
release of the PocketMac® RingtoneStudio for iPhone, a new tool that
gives iPhone users the power to convert almost any media file on
their Macs into a ringtone.

“We’re incredibly excited,” said Terence Goggin, CTO of
Information Appliance Associates. “The iPhone is great, and as more
people are using it, they want to expand the variety of ringtones
they can use on their iPhone. But it was either too expensive or too
difficult to do on their own. That’s where this software comes in.”

PocketMac RingtoneStudio works with sound files, iTunes tracks
you own, and any Mac-friendly movie formats to produce ringtones that
can then be automatically synched to an iPhone.

One of the many powerful features of PocketMac RingtoneStudio is
EditingBay, which allows users to select exactly which 30 seconds
they want to use at their ringtone.

Goggin added, “With the EditingBay feature, customers can select
whatever 30 seconds they want from the movies and music files.
Literally any 30 seconds from each file. The 30 seconds from the
beginning, the 30 seconds smack dab in the middle, or somewhere
towards the end. It’s visual, simple and completely up to the
customer what they want to choose.”

PocketMac RingtoneStudio works on OS 10.4.x and 10.5.x (Tiger and
Leopard) and retails for $14.95.

“This opens up an entirely new world of source material for
iPhone users looking to create custom ringtones. Using the powerful
but easy- to-use editing features of PocketMac Ringtone Studio,
iPhone users can now select up to 30 seconds from any of their
favorite music, movies or iTunes files, and easily make them into
ringtones,” Goggin continued. “This opens up new possibilities for
iPhone users.”
