Friday Night Movie Night: Swype

This app is still in Beta but if you want to check it out, it’s now available in Cydia. If you’re not familiar with Swype, it’s an alternative to traditional touchscreen typing. Instead of tapping each key, you start with the first letter of the word you’re typing and then drag it to each letter and lift off on the last letter. Check it out in the video below and if you try it out, let us know what you think.

Puller for Byline – Pull to Sync

For those of you who don’t know… I have a love hate relationship with the Byline application. Love because it is my favorite RSS reader application. Hate because, in my information craved state, I check the application FAR TOO OFTEN throughout the day! If it were not bad enough… I now have a hack that adds one of my favorite gestures to the application… “pull to refresh.” If you have been around AiS long enough, you know that I almost always install all “pull to refresh” hacks. You name it (Safari, Mail…) I most likely have it installed. So, in sticking to my “pull to refresh” hacking trend, I was overjoyed to see that there was a hack in Cydia that added this feature to Byline.

Simple and easy. Install the hack in Cydia, open Byline, pull to sync! So much more cool than tapping the sync button!

The app is instantly activated when you install it in Cydia. There is no icon or settings for this hack. To deactivate the hack, you would need to uninstall it in Cydia (or use SBSettings Mobile Substrate Addon feature)… but seriously why would you need to deactivate it! I had no issues when I tested the app. You can get Pull To Refresh Safari via the BigBoss source.

Cydia Gets Twitter-Like QuickBar

Ok, first I must say that I hate today. I would like to travel to the most desolate island and sit under a coconut tree all day with no interaction with people or technology. Since I can’t, I’ll go with the flow and post this article about a new feature of Cydia.

Twitter recently removed a very annoying feature of their iPhone app called the QuickBar. It originally hovered over your timeline and was a type of ticker that rotated between trending topics. Not only was it annoying because it was in the way, but if you tapped on it, 95% of the tweets were spam. It was so annoying that someone even made a hack in Cydia that removed the bar. Twitter eventually removed it stating they were just “testing” it.

This morning, Cydia came with a new QuickBar of it’s own. There are some funny “trending apps” that actually link to actual Cydia packages like #ToyStory3, #LebronJames, #Portal, #JustinBieber, #Glee, and one that’s called “Push the Button” that is a Rick Rollr app. Hopefully, it will be gone tomorrow, although it is more functional than Twitter’s.

New Cydia “Manage Account” Feature

This is something I’ve been wanting in the App Store for a long time but I never thought of it working with Cydia. A new link when Cydia first opens allows you to see a list of all the apps you’ve paid for in the Cydia Store. They are linkable so you can just click on the link, install the app again and you’re all set. Again, would love to see this as an app store feature.

If there seems to be apps missing from the list, Saurik has a list a reasons why they might not be showing up:

1) The package might be discontinued by the vendor. I have spent a bunch of time figuring out how to maintain a list of what is “currently hosted”, so this list only includes things that are available.

2) You probably logged in with the wrong account. Remember: Cydia does not ever use PayPal or Amazon accounts for login, only for payment.

Also, users sometimes have multiple Facebook accounts or multiple Gmail accounts, and most people have both an account with Facebook and an account with Gmail: each of these is separate: there is no way for me to know they are all the same person.

I seriously have lost track of the larger number of users who have adamantly sworn to either myself or to a vendor that they have only ever logged in with a single account: trust me, Cydia has only once ever had a “lost payments” bug, and it was only due to PayPal going offline and returning the wrong error code. I did not lose your payment: try another account… please?

3) You purchased the product directly from the vendor, and Cydia does not keep the records for that transaction.

In this situation, you still may see “Package Officially Purchased” on the product: Cydia’s backend APIs allow developers to integrate into the product licensing as seen by Cydia’s UI. Still, it is not practical to iterate every product here to build a “complete” list.

4) You didn’t buy this product from Cydia, you bought it from Rock. In this case, while Cydia has tried very hard to automatically connect together accounts “as if by magic”, sometimes you will need to manually associate your Rock account. You can do that using the giant buttons on any ex-Rock product.

RoundCorners – Round the Corners of your iDevice’s Screen

RoundCorners is a mod that rounds the corners of your iDevice’s screen. It basically creates a mask for your device that gives everything rounded edges. Because it is a mask, it rounds the corners of whatever is displayed on the screen. This includes everything; SpringBoard pages, Stock Applications, App Store Applications, Webpages… etc. The mod actually has a few settings. The settings are located in the stock Settings application. The settings include; the ability to turn the mod on/off, Premode (which allows you to round the entire page… including the statusbar… or just the page), the ability to change the radius of the rounded corned (making it more or less rounded), the ability to turn the mod off in GameMode… etc.

I did not have any problems installing, activating or deactivating the mod. It worked just as it should. I do like that it is not a WinterBoard activated mod and instead has it’s own settings… that is nice. You can get RoundCorners via the BigBoss source.

PageLock – Remove SpringBoard Page Scrolling Ability

PageLock is a hack that removes the ability to scroll through the pages on your SpringBoard. I know what you thinking, “So how in the world am I going to get to my next page of apps?” I’ll be honest, I was thinking the same thing! So, I installed the hack and gave it a try. What I found is that it does indeed stop the ability to scroll between pages on your SpringBoard however, you are able to tap next to the page dots on the bottom of the SpringBoard to go to the next page. Tap to the left of the page dots to scroll left and tap to the right of the page dots to scroll right.

Personally, I could never use this hack on a daily bases… I’m WAY to programed to scroll my through my pages. I left the hack installed on our test iPhone for a while and I’m pretty sure I could not even count the number of times I was like, “What is wrong with this thing!!” Then I would remember that I had the hack installed. You’ll have to let me know in the comments if you think you will use this hack or if you have a really good use for it.

PageLock is activated as soon as it is installed via Cydia. Which means, if you would like to remove the hack… you will need to uninstall it in Cydia. It does not add an icon or any options in the stock Settings application. You can get PageLock via the modmyi source.

Note: The “tap the page dots” scrolling is actually not a new method. You can do that on any iPhone (jailbroke or not).

Another Note: When I uninstalled PageLock… I had to reboot my iPhone before the scrolling would work again. But, once my device rebooted, everything was back to normal.

Light Bright – Easily Adjust Brightness Using Home and Volume Buttons

Light Bright is a sweet little hack that allows you to easily adjust your iPhone’s brightness. For some reason I’m like addicted to adjusting my brightness… I’m not even kidding. My previous favorite was the SBSettings brightness toggle however, I think it has been beat out by Light Bright! Light Bright is so convenient. Once installed, you just hold down the Home Button and use your volume controls to adjust the brightness. This can be done from basically anywhere…. while on the lock screen, the SpringBoard, in any application… etc. The only problem I have found is that if you have Backgrounder installed, you have to make sure not to hold the Home Button down too long before you start adjusting your brightness or you will enable backgrounding. Though, Light Bright can be used anytime where as SBSettings toggle does not work in Cydia or any application that does not display the status bar. I personally think it’s a totally sweet hack. Backgrounder Update – Supports iOS 4.2.1

Backgrounder recently received the awaited update which allows the hack to work on iOS 4.2.1. The beta version had been available for a while but the official update was finally released. For those of you who are not familiar with Backgrounder, it is an hack that gives you “total control of backgrounding on an iPhone/iOS-based device. With Backgrounder, *you* decide when an app should keep running, and when it should quit.”

Friday Night Movie Night: Graviboard [Video]

Tonight’s Friday Night Move Night is Graviboard, a mod that “brings gravity to the homescreen.” Once it is installed and activated, your icons are “affected by gravity”. Check out the video demo below. I personally have not installed this app. I just can’t bring myself to pay $2.99 for fun app. However, I am curious to know if you can tap on an icon to open an app while this mod is activated. Latest Version of Cydia Ported to iOS 2.x and 3.x

Saurik, the developer of Cydia, recently tweeted that he has ported the new version of Cydia to iOS 2.x and 3.x. The new version of Cydia is currently only available to people who jailbreak using the latest version of redsn0w. The best part of the latest Cydia is that it is much faster. Below is a list (compiled by ModMyi) of a few of the other features included in the new version. Maybe we will see an update in Cydia for the Cydia app… we have seen that before. I personally would love to have the faster version of Cydia!
